M. Night Shyamalan To Make 'Last Airbender'

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

M. Night Shyamalan will battle the elements when he tackles "Avatar: The Last Airbender," a live-action big-screen adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon animated series, for Paramount Pictures' MTV Films and Nick Movies.

Shyamalan will write, direct and produce the adaptation, which Nick hopes will turn into a three-picture series with Shyamalan's continuing involvement. The project marks the first time that Shyamalan, who is known for crafting original screenplays, will direct material he didn't create. It also is a rare foray for him into the kids pic arena, though he did flirt with directing one of the "Harry Potter" movies and did co-write 1999's "Stuart Little."

matt
im excited to learn that there will be a live-action adaptation of Avatar. the series on nickelodeon is great. however i think shyamalan might be a bit too out-there for this movie.
Tim
Lame. Stop making crappy OVERRATED Nicktoons into movies. And what a waste of such a talented Director.
Jason
Do you know how freaking hard it will be to pull this off also to make this movie it would have to be like 6 hours long to from where the show began to where it ended. What story line would they have to pull out of their ass to make this a good movie and it would be so hard to pull off the AVATAR state because you would some the greastest special effects people to work on this movie and you would go bankrupt by the third weeek of filiming because of all the WATER,FIRE,EARTH, and AIR effects look at HALO the movie they had to stop because it was too hard to pull offf that movie.
Mary
I don't know, this guy is good and everything but this movie is either going to be really good or horrible... I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
Joaquin
i agree with mary, but i hope that turns really really good!
Justin
i agree with matt
with all his pastwork he might make avatar a little dark
Dina
I agree with Tim. I don't want to see kids movies I don't care who makes them.

Dude I can't wait for this film to be released. I'm also glad that they are hoping to make it into 3 movies. M. Night Shyamalan is known for his creativity and cleverness and I'm glad he's taken on the role as Director.

Shyamalan is due...def needs a big hit. i wasnt that impressed with Lady in the Water, it was a good story, but the acting could have been a lot better. hopefully this will b a good one...sort of a change for Night eh?

It seems to me that if they are planning three films that they are going to follow the already laid out chapters of Water, Earth, and (this coming season) Fire. Making it this way will mean they will probably have to do it like Peter Jackson did with Lord of the Rings and film all three at once or else risk their actors out growing their parts. I also don't think it will be too hard to adapt as all their martial arts are based in reality. Wireworks and CG will provide the rest. I've always thought that this series was very well thought out and never given its credit since it was presented on Nickelodeon. True, it does have some kid humor, but it has some of the most interesting fight sequences and uses their bending abilities so wonderfully that I think people should give it a second look before they judge.

I think they should jsut keep it a cartoon and use the movie to finish off the season or last book cause i think that would make more money.
Jameson
I think that this movie will be a huge hit or a great waste of time(hopefully a hit). The martial arts are amazing and the story is very creative. I can't wait til' this movie comes out.
diyami
I hope the martial arts well be by real martail arteswho know what there doing. Black belts or higher dans. There's nothing worse then going to see a movie that should have jet lee action and finding power ranger. I've seen a lot of kids who are every skilled hopefuly they will find some good ones.
erchus
i think its a great idea to make it into live action because of the great strides that CG effects have taken over the past couple of years. also, everybody always wonders what it would be like to actually bend, so in live action (hopefully) we can see it in "real life", as opposed to a cartoon. im excited to see the casting, adapting, and overall outcome of avatar. as far as money goes for the cg, this is freakin paramount, nickelodeon, and MTV we are talking, so there should be no problem there. o and avatar is not an overrated crappy kids cartoon. the storyline, fight sequences, and character development clearly sets it apart from other nicktoons. but all this is just my opinion =).
Trem
I AM HOPEING M. KNIGHT DOES NOT MESS THE BEST
AMERICAN "ANIME" UP!!!! I was kinda hopeing JAMES CAMORAN
creater of TERMINATOR series to direct it! But oh well.To all of you
who think it's just for kids should not UNDER ESTIMATE it's PLOTLINE,ACTION, and DRAMA!!!
cat
Tim UR WRONG! have u even seen avatar??? its definatly the best show on tv. it doesn't only interest kids its genuinly a very good show for people of all ages. i can't wait to see what shymalan does with the storyline i just hope he doesn't fill it with all those unnessary twists. the bending will be so good in live action!!
alex
this will be great but is it going to be an animation again or will it be live action with actors? anyway it show be awsome if its as well writen as the tv show
Sarah
I ttly agree with Cat! Oh my gosh! This show is awesome, and I've known about Night doing this thing for Avatar for almost one year! So, I'm waiting! I soooo can't wait for this movie to release! It will be awesome!
Big T
LEAVE IT ALONE!!! There is no reason to make this show into a live action movie...especially with M. Night Shama lama ding dong as the Director.
kate
what on earth are you thinking don't make movies of avatar that will just wreck the whole thing. DON"T DO ANYTHING
Cilla
I think it's going to be amazing! I know a lot of people hate M. Knight, but he has idea's that no one else would dare try. Avatar is such an amazing anime and I think someone with FRESH Idea's would hit this movie right on the nose! I've been saying that they need to make avatar a movie for awhile now and it's finally happening! I CAN'T wait!
Now we just need someone to take on Zelda and Halo.
Melissa
I think Avatar is great 'n' all but all I can imagine is that they'll conquer the Fire Nation and Aang and Katara will kiss and bla bla bla...If they try something NEW it could be a hit.Maybe?
Joe Shmo
i think making a movie out of it is a big mistake. there are certain shows that are best done with animations and some that aren't. this is one of the latter. you'll have to delete huge portions of the story line so you can fit it in 2 hours or so. i don't think i will be watching this movie as i don't want to be disappointed with all the content cutting that will be done. it is just impossible to fit the story in 6 hours. now, if they make each movie 3 1/2 hours each, i'll be first in line.
ALEX
well i think that then they make this movie it would make it awsome or it would just ruin it but hoping on it beeing good because the series is just good and does anyone know then season 3 chapter 56 is out aparently i was going to be out on the 14 of july but it hasent?
Noname
A live action Avatar!!!! Yay!!! But, M. Night Shyamalen is making it? That's a little weird, but cool.
