DVD Review

While exploring freedom of expression, the creative process and the healing potential of inherent wisdom, the Dialogue community installation and its crew travel across the United States; visiting popular public areas in over 9 diverse cities, including: San Francisco, District of Columbia, Denver, Santa Fe and New York.

Unfolding like a narrative drama, Dialogue demonstrates how profoundly the unexpected can inspire, why our public spaces are being circumscribed and, in moving interview footage, how the wisdom of the ages revitalizes lives -- all against the backdrop of America's ever-changing landscape.

Dialogue is an art installation consisting of nine, 7 X 8 foot free standing screens with over 2,000 inspiring quotations arranged under eighteen general topics such as love, success, politics, community, strength and character. Mannequins stand among the panels.

We begin with social artist Mike Garibaldi Frick creating the project, testing it and then taking it on the road with his partner, best friend and little dachshund. Along the way, we meet eccentric characters, compelling regular Americans and provocative public officials. Mike allows the audience direct access to a sense of discovery and, at times, meditative contemplation.

It's not easy taking a public art installation cross country, though, and as the crew gets bogged down by road fatigue, they are harassed in some locations, get swamped by the weather and ignored in others. Rallied by appreciative viewers and a surprise meeting with one of the luminaries quoted on the panels, they forge on...

"The bold story of an inspiring community art project and its compelling journey across the United States ..." "... a provocative, revealing and meditative glimpse into the creative process and America's social landscape."
