Today is a good day to watch this movie - Rating: 5/5

The first movie is one of my favorite sci fi movies of all time. So I was excited when they made a sequel but it turned out to be horrible. But when I heard they were making a third and doing it right I became excited once again and it stayed that way even after watching the movie. Now this should have been the 2nd movie. It was a true sequel. Brought back Johnny Rico, strong storyline and even those corny news reels. The only thing I wish they had was more bugs return like the ones that shoot fire liquid or those flying ones. But we did meet the gernades that bug that was the quarter of the size of a planet. Good movie.

SST3 Marauder - Rating: 5/5

Good follow thru from I. I particularly like the fact that there is a door open for more to come - as previously noted - movie or tv series. Go, Johnny, go!

The worst of the series - Rating: 2/5

marauder is definately the worst of the series. first the movies does not flow into any specific plot. i dont want to tell the plot so i dont ruin it for the starship troopers fans. the story is very rocky, no point, and many uses useless external elements. the starship trooper series is SUPPOSED to be sensless violence against bugs, however marauder somehow throws religion into the movie. im catholic so i have nothing against religon, but it doesnt have any place in this movie. that was definately the worst part of the movie. the movie is also has terrible graphics at best. i've seen video games that look more realistic. the marauder robots come with some incredible weapons which petty much wipe out the bugs in a single blast, needless to say that the ending fight seen is short, not exciting, and terribly created. other problems are: not enough fighting, not enought swearing, not enough purpose, terrible graphics, not enough action. this movie fails to live upto its name, because starship troopers 1 and 2 was great. i gave this movie 2 stars, 1 star for having th guts to make this movie and 1 star for some of the good looking woman used.

It Is a Good Day to Die - Rating: 4/5

My Rating: 3.75 out of 5

The Good Things
*Has a good amount of action and special effects.
*Very good photography.
*Better production quality than "Starship Troopers 2." Sets, props, and costumes are great. Introduces plenty of new gadgets and new alien bugs.
*Remains true to the original concepts and ideas presented in the last films.
*Storyline is good and easy to follow.
*Writing is generally good. The movie has a few good lines (some unintentionally funny).
*Greater insight on the political system (the Citizen's Federation). Much of the movie focuses on the inter-office transactions in the high-ranking sections, so it's more than just a bunch of guys with guns blowing stuff up.
*Interesting themes about religion and politics. Some interesting satire (but still not up to par with the first film).
*Good cast of characters. Acting is passable.
*Music is okay.

The Bad Things
*Probably not for the squeamish. Contains some bloody violence and nudity (but it's not quite as bad as the last two films).
*Despite the slick-looking production value, it's still not up to par with the first film, and can therefore be seen as inferior (I don't think it's too bad, though). Also, some special effects do look a little fake.

"Starship Troopers 2" was completely dull; I was pleased to see that number 3 returned to the basic fundamentals of the first original film. Aside from bringing back Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien), they've also brought back the battles, the satire, the gung-ho attitude, and consequently, the fun. It expands the franchise a little better too, incorporating more interesting political issues and ideas, and presenting a religious element. It's still not quite up to par with the first movie, but it sure beats the crud out of the second.

The DVD has good video quality. The sound is okay, but seems overdriven and distorted in some parts. It includes a few featurettes. The Blu-Ray has great video quality and okay sound.

If this review has not been helpful, then you are in violation of the Federation's morale, and need to be executed (or rather, leave a comment and tell me how I can improve).

Johnny Rico Is Back! So Where Is Paul Verhoeven? - Rating: 2/5

Here is a good news: in "Starship Troopers 3: Marauder" Casper Van Dien returns as Johnny Rico, now a colonel in charge if his own unit. As you know, he was seen in the original "Starship Troopers" more than 10 years ago and though he looks a bit aged, Casper Van Dien is in good shape as the reliable hero of this sci-fi action. Bad news is, well, I really hate to say this, but they should have spent more on the production designs and special effects.

This is the first film for director Edward Neumeier (who also wrote the script for all the "Starship Troopers" films including this one and "RoboCop") His script written for "ST3" attempts to cover so many things - battles, intrigues, romances, politics and even religion - that it becomes unfocused with bits of this, bits of that, and some of ideas that could have been developed. You will see "Marauder," a powered mobile military machine worn by Federation soldier, but the battle scenes involving this new deadly weapon need better effects.

I almost forgot to tell you the story. It is complicated, but basically it begins with the humans' battles against warrior bugs, but it gradually becomes more about the internal conflicts among humans. Rico is not allowed to act like a hero until the very end (his screen time is comparatively short), and that means, if you are looking for the heavy combats and bloody battles between humans and bugs as seen in the first installment of Paul Verhoeven-directed "Starship Troopers," you will be disappointed.

The new film shows us more about the politics of Federation, introducing an enigmatic character Admiral Enolo Phid (Amanda Donohoe, "Snake Lady" of Ken Russell's cult film "The Lair of the White Worm"), who might or might not be Rico's adversary. Resistance groups and Federation's draconian reaction to them are also depicted along with a propaganda song "A Good Day to Die" (which is a big hit, according to the film), but the new additions are not as impressive as the darkly funny newsreels seen in Verhoeven's original.

I didn't hate the film, and actually I like the song. It is much better than "Starship Troopers 2." The third film, however, needs something more, either budget or Paul Verhoeven's knowingly over-the-top style.
