"Let them hate me, so long as they fear me!". - Rating: 4/5

Caligula has been called one of the most controversial films ever made and once you catch a glimpse of this film then you will probably agree with this. Caligula (for those that don't know) follows the dizzying rise to power of Caligula as Emperor of Imperial Rome. A film of epic proportions filmed in Italy back in the 70's by director Bob Guccione of Penthouse magazine and Italian director Tinto Brass, it comes across like Ben Hur for the criminally insane, and has all the cinematic hallmarks of a cinema classic (but not quite a cinema classic) packed with perversion, decadence, hardcore sex, graphic gore and violence and total weirdness. Although this film is obviously not for everyone as some of you might be offended since this fully uncut version is pornographic. Malcolm McDowell is terrifyingly insane in this film. If the real Caligula was one tenth as barking mad as he is portrayed here, you have to pity him. The poisonous relationship between an increasingly mad Caesar and his bullied and degraded Senate is played out perfectly. There is no-one he doesn't manage to alienate as he moves closer to declaring himself a God. Except, perhaps the horse with whom he shares a bed after his sister dies who was also his lover. Not a great film by any means but the storyline and depiction of Rome at that time is fairly faithful, the costumes and huge set designs also looked fantastic. The acting of all the leads is good with Peter O'Toole, John Guilgud and Helen Miren giving great performances and the script for the most part isn't bad at all. As for the reviewers who suggest it is 'well known' that the actors didn't know what they were letting themselves in for, yes they did! Both the audio commentaries by Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren confirm that they were well aware that it would have a lot of sexual content. The scenes they were in also confirm this. The disc I own is the old Image Entertainment edition which I found at another online store, the reason why I got this was because it was cheap and the only edition that I really wanted and it was totally and fully uncut (you should probably get the Caligula (Three-Disc Imperial Edition) if you have the extra cash). the print is a nice pristine widescreen which has been digitally remastered and restored with a dolby surround soundtrack. There's not much in the way of extras, you get the usual cast filmographies and there's a choice on the audio front but most importantly there is the Making of Caligula documentary. This is fascinating in its own right, it follows the ups and downs (pardon the pun ;-)) of producing this epic, the countless problems that cropped up during it's creation. Always interesting and often funny, as far as extras go the Making of Caligula (although showing some age on the print) is a real treat. Check it out!.

Caligula - Rating: 5/5

Caligula is a brutal upfront conception of of pagan Rome. The Caesaric or Imperalistic downslide of the Juli dynasty (tribe). It is pretty accurate as far as any real historical data is concerned. Most has been destroyed. I liked the part of his relationship with his horse. Check Wikipedia.

Absolute erotica! - Rating: 5/5

This movie is jam packed with erotica. This version earns its name of unrated. Highly recommend this movie if you like nudity. Definately not for children.
