The worst film of all time - Rating: 1/5
This film is quite simply the worst bomb of all time. The plot is so ghastly that when you describe it to people they think you are kidding. This is a horrible film, and if I had to place bets I would bet that in all history no one has ever gone back to see it twice.
The plot is about a woman marrying another woman while pretending to be a man. I swear to God. Streisand plays the lead, and she is as unappealing as anything you can imagine.
You cannot make this stuff up.
Run, don't walk, away from this bomb.
Entertaining - Rating: 4/5
I've just finished reading Streisands biography. The author made mention that the love scene between Yentl and his wife was highly sexual. [I can't remember her exact words!]I didn't find that particular scene to be so. I did enjoy the theme song. The film was entertaining.
Stellar! - Rating: 5/5
I loved this movie when I first saw it and this recreation made me love it even more. Barbra's commentary makes it special. Barbra fans, it's a must have!
Barbra's Best!! - Rating: 5/5
I saw this picture in it's first release in 1983...had anticipated it since Streisand had bought the film rights...was very pleased to know that she was both starring and directing...and it was well worth the wait. It is one of very few films that in my opinion has stood the test of time. The leads are great as well as the fine supporting players. Amy Irving is luminous!! Reccomended for all fans of Barbra!!
Long Awaited DVD Release! - Rating: 5/5
When I saw this movie in 1983 it touched my soul and never let go. 25 years later I still remembered the story and some of the music, and I have watched for years for its DVD release. Elated to finally see it, I didn't hesitate to pay the 19.99 price.
This release is a special 2-disc Director's Extended Edition, with cut and uncut versions of the movie, plus a few special features, none of which are very special, other than Steisand's introductions. So a single DVD would have been just as good for me, but I'm just happy to have it, in whatever form!
This movie is Steisand at her best, as director, co-writer, singer, and star. It's a timeless story of a woman who yearns to study, but who lives in a culture that says study is only for men. She disguises herself as a man in order to get that education. A story of a strong woman who breaks the gender roles of her time, and a tangled love story.
Personally the marriage part of the story I find disturbing, as inconsistent with the judgment such a woman would likely have. Nonetheless, this film ranks high in my all-time favorites, and I highly recommend it!
