DVD Review
Few hauteur directors are more revered and beloved than Oscar "Budd" Boetticher, Jr., who lived a life more amazing than any movie. And few films have been more eagerly-awaited on DVD than the spare, adult westerns he made at Columbia in the late 1950s, all starring Randolph Scott, most written by future director Burt Kennedy, and co-starring such outstanding actors as James Coburn (in his film debut), Richard Boone, Maureen O'Sullivan, Pernell Roberts, Lee Van Cleef, and Craig Stevens. Now, at last, you hold them in your hand: The Tall T, Decision at Sundown, Buchanan Rides Alone, Ride Lonesome and Comanche Station. Rounding out the set is Bruce Ricker's acclaimed feature-length documentary, A Man Can do That, executive produced Budd's friend Clint Eastwood. Sony Pictures and The Film Foundation are honored to present one of the absolutely essential collections of this or any year.

Perfect Westerns - Rating: 5/5
These films are something else. Sparse and direct with great dialogue- no fat whatsoever. Randolph Scott defines what it is to be a man. Good looking women, handsome men- lots of dust and lumpy rocks. Thoughtful with gun fights, intrigue and ambiguous, complex villians. A great night in. Very much recommended.
A great director only when Burt Kennedy was in the script saddle - Rating: 5/5
Three of the films presented here are solid-gold masterpieces of the Western genre: The Tall T, Ride Lonesome and Comanche Station. I'm giving the five stars for them (and I'd give six if I could). The other two (Decision at Sundown and Buchanan Rides Alone) are noticeably weaker. It is clear that Boetticher only really excelled when Burt Kennedy wrote the scripts. A strange filmic alchemy then seems to have taken place. Boetticher's other Westerns (for example, Man from the Alamo and Seminole) are also fairly mundane. Ironically, Burt Kennedy's many Westerns as a director are largely ordinary.
excelent copy enjoyed them all - Rating: 5/5
good quality and very enjoyable already had these movies but the quality of budd boetticher box set was worth getting the set. ALF
Class A Films on a B Budget - Rating: 5/5
Anyone interested in film must see these movies. I was not familiar with Boetticher except for his "The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond". This cycle is a variation on a single theme of a stranger riding into a situation with an agenda. Sad events have occurred in his past. The stranger is played with stoic, steely determination by Randolph Scott. His craggy visage echoes the beautifully photographed western landscape. Subtle expressions communicate much beneath the surface about his character and suffering. The stories are layered with unexpected twists that constantly keep one's interest and make one yearn for more. Performances are uniformly excellent from the iconic Scott through the various villains(who at times reveal characteristics similar to the hero)such as Claude Akins, Richard Boone and Pernell Roberts. Above all is the expert direction of Boetticher who reveals himself a true artist in the same league as Ford or Hawks. Incidentally, the first film in this series is not included because it was done under another studio. I would also highly recommend "Seven Men from Now".
Budd Boetticher Box Set - Rating: 5/5
WOW! A great value for what I consider Randolph Scott's best movies. The commentaries are very interesting not only about Scott but also about Budd Boetticher. If you like westerns and you like/love Randolph Scott you have no excuse not to add this set to your collections.
