DVD Review

Legendary guitar hero Eric Johnson's 1988 performance on the Austin City Limits TV show was an amazing performance. The performance is now available on DVD. It captures the magical guitar work and energy that only Eric Johnson live can deliver. Also available on CD.

A Musician's Musician - Rating: 5/5

While this performance will appeal mostly to musicians, it is still a great set of music for the serious music appreciation crowd. So I recommend this to all who enjoy well crafted music -- not just "songs". These are compositions, not tunes; they are crafted with no wasted notes or baggage.

You may or may not enjoy instrumental music, nor the particular style employed here, boardering on the progressive, but there is no question Eric Johnson is a master craftsman demonstrating his wares to a very appreciative audience.

The quality of this DVD is top notch. The audio quality (at least in stereo on a decent system) is very good. The other complaints about video and audio quality are really quite misplaced -- and the clothing comments?? Who cares. I don't go to concerts to see the fashion sense of the players. Musicians are typically unconcerned with fashion anyway.

For guitar players, this is a Ph.D level class on technique, sound, tone, composition, execution and presentation (did I leave anything out?). Thankfully, we also have "Total Guitar" and "The Fine Art of Guitar" to learn from, right?

A must own for anyone who loves a good show.

Interesting... Very, very Cool! - Rating: 4/5

In the G3 concert ERIC JOHNSON showed why he is one of the greatest guitarists of 90's aside Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, but this 1988 Houston concert really shows some of the primary roots of an experimented musician playing most of his best material in a trio situation: There are no keyboards or another kind of musical assorment that helped to fill the spaces in between, so Eric Johnson makes his job focused in this situation. The sound is great, and the final result is an oustanding collection of songs played inside (what it seems to be) a T.V. studio night program with almost uncheering people (How they dare?). As a matter of fact, the performance was cut and edited for its distribution, and this is my complain about it. Why not all the songs?

An observation (maybe the less important) is about the image of the group. It's opposite to the kind of music that band plays. There's a lack of uniformity in the wardrobe: Eric johnson was wearing a good looking dark blue jacket (a la Jimi Hendrix style) and the rest of the band was wearing clothes with country motives (?). The Bass drum had it too (?): It's not about fashion because I like Country Music, it's about structure, uniformity and musical forms... in the G3 concert, Eric Johnson with his brother playing bass, gave us another image of the band. A real uniformity...

But Foremost of whichever thing, and the better, is that there is a lot of freedom in the musicianship of the performance. Eric plays with a big amount of confidence and a high level of musicianship showing all his classic guitar trademarks. The bassist plays a kind of a country style instrumental that introduces some different air in the presentation. But the better songs are those of the AH VIA MUSICOM album. This performance is a jewel for the real fan and for the neophyte musician, and the music really makes worthwhile the price to pay!... So Good Luck!

Awesome musicianship - EJ at top form - Rating: 5/5

Okay, the outfits and haircuts date this show but the photography and musicianship are first rate. A "must" for guitar players who want close-ups of EJ's fingerwork.

This DVD is surprisingly popular with teens!
