Where the rubber meets the road and the bad guys meet the badge -- that's where you'll find California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers Jon (Larry Wilcox) and Ponch (Erik Estrada). Set in the sun-drenched sprawl of Los Angeles, CHiPs combines action, heroics and fun in 22 Season One episodes whose event-packed storylines range from freeway gridlock (let's use a circus elephant to tow that broken-axled truck!) to wild roadway pursuits (who's that beautiful woman lead-footing a Rolls Royce?), from spilled onions (crying time, fellas) to pure venom (an overturned van loaded with...sssnakes!). Attention all units: Report now for arresting entertainment!

DVD Features:

It's about time!! - Rating: 5/5

When I was growing up I was addicted to CHIPS. As a kid my friends and I used to pretend to catch bad guys on our dirt bikes just like Ponch and John. Yeah that sounds pretty pathetic now but we all did things as a kid we now look back on and laugh. Well this set of DVD's brings back all those memories, good and bad. The clarity of the show is better than I expected. I figured a 1978 show might be a bit grainy for an HDTV, but it looks just fine. yeah some of the dialog is silly but the show is a classic and well worth buying if your a fan.

They don't make shows like this anymore. Everything has to be 100% real or it just doesn't make it. These kinds of shows inspired a whole generation to join the police and catch criminals. Emergency did the same for firefighting. We need more shows like these. You think people are joining the FBI because of "Without a Trace" or becoming Doctors because of "ER". They are grown up soap operas and people only care about which character is sleeping with which. You think "Grey's Anatomy" is inspiring? We need more shows like this. Too bad that ain't going to happen.

One Of My Favourites... - Rating: 5/5

This has to be one of my favourite shows from when I was a kid, and when I heard about this coming to DVD I was excited. I bought this and The Fall Guy in the same week, and I have to say that I was more impressed with this set than The Fall Guy, although I love both shows.

Warner Bros really does like to release things slowly, which frustrates me, but I am however glad that they decided to release this set. And what I find funny is that it wasn't even a Warner Bros show. If you watch the end credits of the show, the show was actually made by MGM. So I guess WB bought the rights for it, and released it.

I know I'll die of old age waiting for some of my favourite shows to finally be released beyond their first seasons from Warner Bros (Everwood, Life Goes On, Night Court, etc) but with this set I was really impressed. I mean the picture and sound quality are a little bit questionable. I would say they really need to remix the sound because when I watch it, the music parts that play are super loud, but the dialogue is kind of low. I turn it up real loud on my surround system to hear the dialogue and then I blow people out of the room when a chase scene comes up because the music and sound effects are too loud.

As for the picture quality though, you still see some crackle and dust in the picture, so I hope they go back and remaster it one day. But other than that this is a great set. This is one of those shows that doesn't get old. I watch these episodes over and over again, and don't get sick of them.

I heard that Warner Bros is going to release season 2 next June, which will be around a year from the time that this was released, but I definitely recommend this set to anyone who is a fan of good storytelling, who likes a good laugh, and likes a lot of realism. This show has it all. Most episodes will keep you on the edge of your seat, from scenarios like trying to save a parachuter who is trapped on an overpass, to snakes in cars, to saving a mother and daughter who's car went over a bank, and is about to fall off a cliff.

I give this show a 5 star rating because it has a lot of replay value, which most shows don't have. You can watch it over and over again. And is a good show for all ages, not just adults. I watched it when I was around 10, and my dad did when he was in his 30's, so that says a lot about the demographic that this show appeals to.

Bitchen - Rating: 5/5

Although I didn't realize it at the time, this series most likely contributed more to my subconscious urge to move to Southern California than anything else. I was in my early teens when this series hit the air. Yeah, it's slightly corny. It was different time. When you're a teen, living in rural Appalachia, and it's 10 degrees below 0, believe a show like this can have a powerful impact. Dig all the scenery shot along the still yet to be opened 210 freeway. Interestingly enough, there have been numerous commercials and shows shot along the last stretch of the 210 that was opened in the past year.
Worth every penny.
