DVD Review

Have you ever said to yourself, "Gee, I like the overwrought soap opera of Melrose Place--if only it had explicit gay sex and supernatural storylines..."? Dante's Cove is for you! Come to this semi-tropical paradise and watch with glee as warlock Ambrosius (William Gregory Lee, formerly Virgil on Xena: Warrior Princess) uses his dark magic to pursue the hunky blond Kevin (Gregory Michael, As the World Turns) while fighting with Grace (Tracy Scoggins, The Colbys, Babylon 5), the powerful witch to whom Ambrosius was engaged...until she caught him in flagrante with a man. Meanwhile, Kevin's lover Toby (Charlie David, host of Crash Test Mommy) struggles to protect Kevin with the help of Van (Nadine Heimann), a newly-minted witch whose dabbling in magic threatens to wreck her relationship with magic-phobe Iowa girl Michelle (Erin Cummings, After Midnight: Life Behind Bars). And what are the schemes of Diana (Thea Gill, The L-Word), the mysterious woman who runs the historical society? Punctuating all of this angst and glowering are copious man-on-man sex scenes with a wee bit of woman-on-woman thrown in to round things out. The special effects are cheap, the dialogue obvious yet confusing, the plot lurches around like a drunk with his foot in a bucket, and the acting...well, let's just say the cast is very pretty to look at. The five episodes of Dante's Cove - the Complete Second Season follow a two-episode first season (more of a pilot, really); the story threads, such as they are, will make just as much sense whether you've seen Season One or not. There are several behind-the-scenes extra features on the dvd; most are the usual "I'm so happy to be on this great show!" stuff, but the most interesting one interviews several cast members about being openly gay actors. --Bret Fetzer

Not normally into Gay Movies...but am starting to watch more! - Rating: 5/5

Normally the shows bore me and there is no point. I watched The Lair Prior to both seasons of Dante's Cove...The Lair was so much like a kindergarten graduation play that they wanted to be a porno without showing too much...it was horribly! Dante's Cove was INCREDIBLE! There was plenty of eye candy for anyone and it was a remarkable storyline with great acting. The gay men's voices were somewhat annoying but not as bad as in the Lair! I recommend both seasons of Dante's Cove!!!

A guilty pleasure chock-full of eye candy - Rating: 4/5

I bought this DVD soley based on customer reviews of the first "season" (if you can call 3-5 episodes that) and word of mouth. I have yet to see the first "season"...but this one didn't give much to complain, to be honest. I loved the supernatural element, the crazy plotline; hell, it reminded me of Passions! A gay version of Charmed is what it is, when you think about it. Plenty of physical beauty to go around, the acting is what leaves much to be desired. I wanted MORE! :D

Even more outrageous the second time - Rating: 3/5

With the second part of this series, I'm even more convinced than ever that the whole project was a big joke on the part of the production team. Honestly, with all the gratuitous sex scenes, goofy dialogue, horrendous non-acting, and the odd blending of 19th century Gothic melodrama and modern beefcake on Turks & Caicos, how could we possibly be expected to take it seriously? It's all an elaborate goof, I'm sure.

awesome - Rating: 5/5

i was very impressed with the way the story line went from back when to the now present ive waited so long for the sequeal of the first one. its really nice to have a movie about gay society with a story line that is not rauncy but something that keeps you wondering what will happen next. keep them coming. as a gay man i find this film close to me because the charactors portray people who will do what is needed to keep the one person in their life that completes them this film is as i say truly awesome. i will suggest another film that is just as wonderful " A BEAUTIFUL THING" you must see this. it will touch your heart. ronnie ray
