Zani is returing to the Charterston township after an education in Swaziland in December of 1989. He runs into an old teacher, Zamani, who regularly beats his wife and once raped Zani's sister. Before he gave up his ideals for a life of debauchery and drink, Zamani was a political activist. Through Zani's inspiration, Zamani's old courage returns and he stands up for his principles again when an Afrikaner threatens to beat up an old man.
