In da fellowship when Gandalf fought da balrog and was hanging off the bridge , I think that some1 out of da fellowship could have pulled him up. Does any one else think this or is der a reson y no1 pulled him up. confused

FirthFlower
And y did aragon hold frodo back.

Neo_Version 7
It was actually Boromir methinks. That was stupid, yes. And Gandalf starts yelling "Fly you fools"!

Dexx
frodo was held back because the bridge was unsafe...it could have cracked anytime. As for gandalf...he's in an istari..he knew what he knew best.

fini
uh did you see how far away everyone was from gandalf??..........no one would have ever reached him in time.......and besides i think gandalf could have pulled himself up IF HE wanted to.
in the movie the balrog only pulled him off the ledge and the fire whip let go of him but in the book the whip dragged him down with the balrog

BOPRecruit 16
it's good that he fell for he became stronger and wiser later.

pinksuezo
finis right. in the books, gandalf goes down immediately cus o the whip, and he yells 'fly u fools' as hes falling, or so i remember.

there was some spat where ian mckellen (gandalf) wanted it to b more like the books, but pj wanted it as it came out in the movie.

+don't forget gandalf had to finish the balrog off...(begining of ttt)

turin
gandalf new that the balrog would be a great threat once the war of the ring started, so he knew that he had to atleast try and defeat it. much the same with smaug. smaug and the balrogs defeat were vital to the defeat of sauron. imagine what that balrog could have done in lorien or rivendale or maybe even if it was at the black gate, or worst of all the pelenor fields. and with smaug still there the dwarves would not have a strong hold in the north so saurons northern armies could have come south, and thats not mentioning what smaug could have done.

Bagtatta
Werd' Turin, you're 100% correct.

turin
thanks!!!

Bagtatta
No probs.

XxtinuvielxX
gandalf knew what he had to do and he could have gotten himself back up if he thought he didn't need to finish what he wanted to do. he needed to get the balrog out of the way, but wizards are very mysterious... huh

Orli'sElf7
well yea i agree he could HAVE gotten himself back up..plus there were still orcs with bows and arrows in proximity to the bridge...even when they were where they were trying to get out of the bines, arrows were coming at them...i dun get it...gandalf DIES then becomes higher in wizard ranking??? confused

pinksuezo
tinuviel he cudnt get himself back up. it makes more sense that he would have if he could have. and in the books he falls immediately, theres no hanging...

and orlis elf, tho bein the white wizard is higher than the other 'colors', i dont think u get the sense in the books that the hierarchy is a rigid promotion deal. i guess what happened is gandalf went back to heaven and was reborn as the leader of the istari (wizards) whose purpose is to defeat sauron. saruman had given up his position as 'the white.' sorry if tis aint a too good explanation, but...

Orli'sElf7
lol yea i get it. lol...thats true but see i havent read the books in about 3 months and they made the movies so different...i got confused...he was reborn that was true..does that mean saruman was too when he became a white? confused

fini
hmmmmmm now thats a good question..........now ur making me confused.......grrrrr

Orli'sElf7
sorrie!!!! (x100) hahah naw dun worry about it i get confused all tha time confused but that is a good question and i doubt toolkein wrote an appendix entry about saruman becoming a wizard (dammit!!)

pinksuezo
they were all created as wizards (they aint human, but maiar, like 2nd level gods or angels) and when they 1st appeared, saruman was already "the white."

Orli'sElf7
how do they "pick" them do you kno?? like...how come gandalf was 1st picked as a gray whilst saruman was chosen as a white? u'd think that them being sort of deities that they would notice that in the end saruman would turn bad

pinksuezo
i dunno... their origins were mysterious, and i believe as good as the explanation gets in the books is that the 5 wizards appeared out of seemingly nowhere long ago, with the sole purpose of defeating sauron, and their leader was saruman the white.

sammilicious
yeh it went saruman the white (who specialised in learning about saurant, then gandalf the grey, then the brown wizard who's eagle saved gandalf from Saruman's tower and also from the place where gandalf and the balrog.. dunno bout the other wizards though... neway.. about gandalf.. and why he returned.. he was sent back to complete his task right... was it to see Aragorn as king or ensure tha frodo destroyed the ring and Sauron's spirit... well after his taks his complete won't he be sent back up and stuff???? or will he just continue to live even though everything is goes right in the end??

Sifer
It's Gandalf the GREY, not GRAY!

Also, as mentioned Gandalf falls straight down without holding onto the ledge in the books. From which, when I first read the books MANY years ago was devastated. Although I should have realised he can take care of himself, I did not realise this as I had not read any of the companion info such as History of Middle Earth Vol 1-3 and Silmarillion and the Hobbit.

I was quite young as well, was proud of readin LOTR when I came to read the Hobbit and realised how much more simple in terms of the use of the English Language is compared to LOTR. Anyway, enough babbling smile

Orli'sElf7
i cant find history of middle earth here in the US...anyone know where i can get that?

pinksuezo
orli i figure the best source would be the silamrillion..

sammi, i wont ruin it for u wit what happens wit gandalf at end of the story ehehehe

pinksuezo
***silmarillion...stupid fingers

Metroplex
or just go to google.ca and type in Silmarillion summary to get the whole history

sammilicious
i already know what happens to gandalf at the end.. i finished reading LOTR today!

pinksuezo
hehe

CaptainInsano
Nice idea for a thread. Happy Dance

FreeMason
Gandalf could not have been saved, he wouldn't have allowed it, nothing with him happens by accident.
