I recently had a look at the Databank in one of the games I owned, and found this:

He took complete control of the government and instituted the so-called New Order, under the pretense of ending the Old Republic corruptions. However, his true agenda focused on the total domination of the galaxy.
Under Palpatine rule, the Old Republic as transformed into the Empire, a tyrannical and oppressive government that attempted to enforce order and loyalty through force and fear. Alien races were eradicated or ensalved, entire industries and star systems were nationalise and terror became the way of life. Slavery was rampant, and social injustices flourished. Even the Jedi Knights, the last beacon of light in the rapidly darkening galaxy were pursued and murdered during this dark time.
Anyone else have info like these that will shed light in Ep III or our Galaxy history?
