I saw it on Friday ..wonderful film. I was actually suprised because I didn't think I was going to like it because in a few places the animation is a little off...but it was so that the animation didn't get in the way of the story.. I thought it was cute!
phinney6
Yes I have been meaning to see that movie, It looks good
finti
Never heard of it, whats it about?
Dim
It's about an Ogre (Shrek) who's sent to save a Princess so that an evil duke will give him back his swamp that's been turned into an enturment camp for fairtale characters.. It is actually alot better than it sounds. The Ogre is voiced by Mike Myers and his sidekick is a talking donkey who's voiced by Eddie Murphy. Cameron Diaz is the Princess and of course there's a spell on her and she's supposed to marry the evil Duke..and there's a dragon that's in love with the donkey.... So on and so forth.
ratcat
I heard that Disney were really worried about this movie.
Dim
They should be..It's a hit over here. Dreamworks seem to be closing in on Disney. We'll have to see how Atlantis does.
ratcat
Maybe that's what Disney need, stop them getting complacent.
Darth Gehenna
Shrek was great, I hope Dreamworks doesn't screw up the sequel, but they seem like the people who could do it right.
Dim
Yeah, thank God it's not Disney.

Ratcat
Not big on Disney huh?
Chewbacca
Shrek was great. I really liked it, as I do most Dreamworks films.

Anyways, I doubt they are closing in on Disney, they aren't even close to that big. But its still a great company. Dreamworks has similar animation to Pixar, which works with Disney, so they will be like the Pepsi & Coke of the movie industry. Where Disney is Coke of course.

ratcat
I'm not sure size matters in this instance, certain Disney execs have made worried rumblings so I hear.
leonglee
Shrek is a fantastic film. It was released in the UK a couple of weeks ago and I have just seen it. The humour works on two levels and it was great trying to spot various fairy tale characters. Animation was top notch. There were also some great characters particularly Mike Myer's very convincing Scottish Ogre!

Texas
I want to see it, but no one wants to go with me...my girl friend refuses, my friends wont go, I even begged my little brother to no avail......I quess I'm just going to have to go by my self, just picture it, a 20 year old guy watching Shrek, alone,.....

zereil
At least Disney is trying something new and obviously trying not to only do Universal sentimental musicals anymore. Shrek however is great and lots of movies put next to it at the momment should worry if people took notice...
finti
I saw a preview and this is a film for Live (my daughter)when she comes of age to whatch movies like this, at the present I`m not gonna see it aint to hot on cartoons or data animated kid flicks (younger kid flicks)
Zereil
I wouldnt necessarily say it could be determined purely a kid flick, its like the simpsons it can be seen on multiple levels
Dim
I agree..it's not very kiddie in my opinion..
King Jedi
Haven't seen it but it looks good. I wish Mike Myers would find another accent though. His Scottish one is as bad as Mel Gibsons.
Dim
But..what's part of the reason it's so funny.

R.C
Which is a pity when you consider that his family came from Scotland, though he was born in Ontario, Canada.
sonofasaiyan
Just started this thread to see how many other Shrek haters are out there.

TheFilmProphet
I just don't like Shrek 2 cause it took the 5th place away from the first Spider-Man in the all time domestic box office records
But with any luck Spider-Man 2 can still get it back

sonofasaiyan
Yea it's already grossed 736 million bucks overall but it has not beaten Spiderman. Spiderman was fifth in 2002 its currently the tenth highest grossing film of all time.

Alright... so why do you hate Shrek then?
Dogbert
I didn't know it was possible to hate Shrek

SpiderGurl
I hate shrek cuz he's green, big, and ugly.
sonofasaiyan
^^Ditto.^^

botankus
....And all ten of those movies will fall within the next five years when ticket prices increase every year.
I discredit lists like that. Lists where the profits are adjusted for inflation are the most credible.
SpiderGurl
Still can't believe Titanic is still the biggest money-maker after all these years, even with the rising ticket prices of today.
sonofasaiyan
You can adjust them for inflation on the site my friend. www.boxofficemojo.com. Give it a whirl.
TheFilmProphet
WRONG!!! Spider-Man $403 million 6th place and Shrek 2 $426 million 5th place

you mixed up the domestic records with the worlwide records
sonofasaiyan
Mmm... I did interpret the statement incorrectly to an extent. I don't count the domestic earnings, I count the worldwide gross. When these films are placed in record books they are ranked by the total amount of money they garner. Spiderman is number 6 in America but !Newsflash! America isn't the only country on the face of the earth.

TheFilmProphet
NEWS FLASH!! Studios mainly care about the domestic in the US. If a movie does poorly here theres no sequel no matter how good it does somewhere else.

sonofasaiyan
OOO, so, I guess studios don't care about the extra money earned when a movie does well overseas either riiiiiiight???. Even if a movie has a mediorce or lukewarm run, but does exceptionally well overseas chances are sequel will be released which is responsible in part for the slew of crappy sequels we so often get that people like myself included, eat up. For example many, many movies gross more overseas than domestically. Hollywood is business and making movies WAS an artform.
e.g 18 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban WB $673.7 WORLDWIDE
$239.7 DOMESTIC
$434.0 OVERSEAS
TheFilmProphet
I didn't say they don't care about overseas gross but I guess you don't read very clearly anyway Harry Potter 1,2,3 have each opened between $80-$93 million in the US so your example proves nothing.

sonofasaiyan
So what??? They have opened with those numbers in the US!!! my friend. Which brings us back to the fact the America is not the only country in the world. The budget and marketing costs are what determine whether a movie is a hit or a flop. The total cost of promotion and production of "Harry Potter and The Prizoner of Azkaban"

is 180 million. So If it made 150 million which is more often than not considered a successful earning, it would not even break even. So the overseas gross is just as invaluable, if not more so than the domestic. And, movies with strong openings have still historically became flops so you sir are the one that has no point.
TheFilmProphet
Actually it turns back around to you because the third Harry Potter made $240 million so far domestically. Which means it almost 100 percent guarantees a sequel with just that the rest is just a bonus. It did have a strong opening in the US and still is not a flop so what you said does not even apply to this.
sonofasaiyan
I know I said IF! it had made 150 million it would be a flop. The bottom line is domestic grosses are too invaluble to be cast aside or ignored. While proportionately on the domesitic scale a gross of 240 million since June 4th is impressive, that does not change the fact that overseas grosses usually give us the figures that tend to make headlines, not just the domestic gross.
TheFilmProphet
If thats true why do we always see the domestic stats on the news, television, internet, and newspaper so much more than the overseas gross?

sonofasaiyan
No we see worldwide grosses more than domestic or overseas which is the point I'm making. Ok... I'll paint a picture for you, lets say your folks bought you ten presents but you got 30 from your relatives in total, which leaves a combined total of 40 gifts. Now would you honestly brag about the ten gifts or thirty gifts respectively or would you tell people you got a total of forty, which is more impressive than ten or thirty. So overseas grosses do matter and do contribute in a part to how well a movie will do. Let's face it, the public is swayed by numbers, domestic, overseas or worldwide.
The Force
shrek was awesome. down wit da haters

TheFilmProphet
Anyway I don't know how I ended up argueing about all this but the first thing I said was I hope Spider-Man 2 can take back 5th place domestically. Do you think it can?
sonofasaiyan
Yes I'm hoping with every fibre of my being. I've loved Spiderman since I was a kid and I grew up with him as many children did and still do. Shrek is the new guy in town. His film may surpass the gross of Spiderman 1, but he will never rival the iconic status of Spiderman.
sonofasaiyan
If you like Shrek please don't post .

Stormy_Day
Shrek rocks

Ahnold
And that's why you hate the film?! That's so vain!
Vengeance
Shrek made so much money, and u no why becuase it was awsome and the second even better.
deadly_force
well i dont care what anyone says im a hater of shrek just because the film sucks why people like the donkey ill never know he gets right on my nerves and anyway any film which stars mike myers (spelling?) souldnt be made as he SUCKS!!!
TheFilmProphet
Shrek is the worst animated movie I can't believe it beat out Lion King because Lion King has actual feeling what does Shrek 2 have? A talking donkey.

Cinemaddiction
You have brilliant reasoning. Don't ever change.
sonofasaiyan
LOL.

Vengeance
well lets think shrek and shrek 2 comidy, and lion king more like a drama. so thats why u prolly like lion king better. u might not like comidies.
Cinemaddiction
I didn't see anything special about "The Lion King" personally, other than the soundtrack. To me, all hand drawn animated movies are on par with each other. While handdrawn characters are to be admired, there's just something about "Toy Story" and "Shrek" that's just 100 times more admirable.
Vengeance
true enough, the only part about lion king thats gold is making little kids watch a little lion watch his father die lol.
Stormy_Day
Thats why I like shrek

vvvrulz
I don't mind shrek, but its really not as great as its made out to be. There seems to be a huge following for the big green ogre, but apart from the odd slick dialogue, i don't really find it particularly funny. To me its more of a fairytale ride with the odd laugh here and there, nothing utterly hilarious.
Cinemaddiction
I'd think people appreciate the incredible animation, in addition to the witty dialogue, and the modernization of olde fairy tales.
Fairy tales were a lost art since the 80's.
Stormy_Day
The animation is indeed excellent.
V@LL3jOk!D707
shrek rocks.
ragesRemorse
i agree with the disdain of everyone twords this movie. Oh sure it's cute, but in my opinion is nothing special. I usually dig the "disney type" movies, and keep an opne mind twords these films when watching them. In dealing with this movie i was bewildered to see how many people loved this movie, not just like but talk about it for weeks on end at work. It wasnt funny, atleast not consistantly, the message was the same as the first. i just dont understand.
Stormy_Day
What I liked most about the film is how they where able to make a person like Shrek a character that everybody can love.I also liked the cameos from the fairytale creatures.
sonofasaiyan
God, despite the numerous posts by Shrek lovers on this thread I still hate it.

Stormy_Day
Well I dont

TheFilmProphet
I do

laur4545
how could you hate shrek its one of the funniest movies i have ever seen its hilariouse!!!
Stormy_Day
right on

vvvrulz
It really isn't that funny.
Stormy_Day
yeah it is
Ive seen it like 20 times and it still rocks

Vengeance
yes but u also like Dragon ball series so i will take no serious view into your opinions becuase our veiws differ way to much lol.
Dark_Thor
voor de mensen die als shrek waarom u in een draad zou willen posten waar het aan shrekhaters toegewijd is.
Red Superfly
I quite like Shrek.
Shrek 2 was a little dissapointing - there weren't half as many memorable gags or scenes, and some of the best stuff was just re-mixing some of the stuff from the first movie (Shrek 1 - they have a bird blow up to kinda shock us, Shrek 2 - they have a bird fly smack bang into a wall to kinda shock us again).
I did however, love Jennifer Saunders character, she was awesome.
sonofasaiyan
Don't compare the Shrek to the Dragonball series...please, it just makes you look bad.

Stormy_Day
I know its better Vengeance

Major Knight
lol makes me look bad, oh yea a adult cartoon(shrek) compaired to a pre teen show for kids(DB) oh yea that makes me look realy bad lol. here try this go and tell some hot chick you watch a kids cartoon show im sure she will be impressed lol.
sonofasaiyan
Ok...I will. I don't know what horrid state the world is in when a 10 ft ogre and a talking donkey are in the highest grossing film of the summer so far.

Major Knight
one with a humor lvl higher then a 10 year old morning cartoon show like DBZ.
sonofasaiyan
DBZ isn't comedically based, its action oriented and DBZ is not for kids, Funimation cleaned it up. In the Japanese version you could actually give it an R-rating because of language and nudity. But of course you wouldn't know that. You're just another person that thinks anime is for kids because well, its anime. Shrek is a bunch of garbage and just becuase it has good numbers doesn't mean it's even remotely as good as DBZ.
Primitive Screwhead #1
I tried watching a couple of episodes of DBZ, and could actually feel the IQ points draining away while watching it. By the fourth commercial for Trailer Trash Barbie, I actually found myself barely resisting the urge to go out and buy five of them.
BloomBabyGirl
hey hey hey babe no making fun at japanese epoples work cuz they run evrything. with 1 touch of a button ur PS 2 would be dead...no ih...ilike DBZ kinda the same thing over and over but iut has funny parts too
Major Knight
OMG you didn't just say i no nothing about anime. dude i draw anime if u want i could email u a pic of chi from a series called chobits. anyway its normal crap for anime to have nudity and swears in japan. so it having that stuff makes it normal in europe. even sailer moon had nudity(last eps she fight naked with wings and sword). and yes NA version of DBZ is for kids.
Primitive Screwhead #1
Who's making fun of Japanese people's work? There's plenty of anime / Japanese animation out there that I do like... Neon Genesis, Cowboy Bebop, MSA Abenobashi (finally got to check that out... now THAT can be funny), anything by Miyazaki... heck, even Inuyasha. DBZ and Pokemon are two of the worst things to come out of Japan... but I realize that I am not the demographic it is tailored for. Which is why I can't understand why it is aired in the timeslot it is each week.
BloomBabyGirl
ill agree with poke mon. what a waste. if it wasnt for pickachu no1 would watch it. and now they have atekn it tooo far.new episodes stil??!?! WTF!
titanic beat LOTR

amity75
I can't believe people hate Shrek. It's impossible to hate it.
Major Knight
lol i feel the same way.
sonofasaiyan
Titanic came out first.
pinkcabbage
shrek i have to say is the best animated film i ever saw and shrek 2 have you seen shrek 2 donkey is the best woohoo it rules and i have both soundtracks they are well worth gettin if ya love the film and its music - wel obviously
