What does everyone do for a living? I am a college student and was curious about what SW fans do to make the money to buy SW movies.

Texas
We'll I'm currently unemployed and probably will be until next summer, because I'm going back to school in 3 weeks. But up until June I was a data entry Technician at Excel Communications, and then in high school I worked as a telephone sales representative for Ticketmaster. I got to go to all the sold out concerts and always got floor seats! stick out tongue

Ushgarak
I'm not anything, I plan to be a writer.

Texas
We'll I'm not anything anymore, those bastards fired me! But Oh well, I'll mooch off my parents for a year evil face

Ushgarak
I guess there are worse things...

Texas
Well there are. My car is going crazy, I dont feel like going back to school at all, my very good friend is now officially clinically depressed, my cat has cancer and I've gained 10 pounds this summer sad

Ushgarak
I'm sorry to hear all that. Seems this board is becoming a haven for people with troubles.

Except Queeq; he seems to be living the high life in mighty Dutcholand...

Texas
Except Queeg? That man has more problems then anyone on this board! Earlier today he branded my ass with iron lips. Anyone who would do that to a sweet, innocent person, such as myself, is greatly disturbed!

Ushgarak
He's a complex man, to be sure...

Texas
Well that's a nice way of putting it. I do like those smiley faces he creates, there very creative. Oh, I almost forgot, this is completely off topic, but I noticed that you were not very nice to Edna in the Welcome forum, what's the deal?

Ushgarak
We always argue, that's the secret of our success. Besides, I only said 'stupid bloody witch'.

I mean, we first kissed 30 seconds after I tolde her to 'shut your moaning witchy face'. after all.

Texas
Texas know better, he stay out of complex relationship

Ushgarak
He may be clever there... we'll see what happens when Edna next returnd, I guess.

Texas
Well the old Texas would report your malice comments immediately to Edna, but the new gentler and kinder Texas will not. You should count your blessings! Wheres Phinney6? he's always on the board around this time.

Ushgarak
Guess he is camping; he does that a lot.

Besides, Edna wouldn't care. No more than before, anyway.

Texas
I looked at Phinneys town on the map, and that poor guy is out in the middle of nowhere! I counted 9 streets, I like little towns and all, but very little towns give me the creeps!

Ushgarak
As I understand it, he has a fair amount of land to play with...

Texas
Not only that, but theres this large lake to the east, and you know that Phinney goes ice skating in the winter. See that makes me so jealous, the only place I can go ice skating is at the Galleria.

Ushgarak
Heck, all these people with space... precious little space left around here.

Texas
That's true, you Europeans are crowded like sardines! No elbow room, I couldn't live there, I need to be down here in Texas, where everthings big and spacious!

Ushgarak
Heck, THAT much space would scare me...

Texas
Oh me too! Once you leave the cities there is nothing but empty fields as far as the eye can see. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie doesn't help in reducing the errieness either!

Ushgarak
Is it me, or is only one person actually chainsawed in that film? Not quite a chainsaw massacre.

Mind you, it's not as if the UK is one complete stuffed metropolis. Even if that were possible, Japan would beat us by a LONG way...

Texas
I could never live in Japan, too crowded, too many earthquakes, and the cars are tiny!

Ushgarak
They get all the consoles first, though...

Well, the Cosby Show is ending, and Who's The Boss starts soon, and I learnt my lesson about trying to bravw that before. Time for this Knigfht to settle down, but he will rather inevitablt be back...

See you around...

Texas
nighty nite smile

JediOasis
I'm a college student at the University of Kentucky. It'll be my second year, and I'm majoring in English with a history minor. As for part time crap, I worked with my dad who runs a foundry during the summer. Thank god thats over. smile

Texas
So I take it you live in Manchester KY and not Manchester UK? WOW, majoring in English, that's got to be tough, I would die taking all those English classes, I'm majoring in Real Estate smile

queeq
Culture vs. money I hear. laughing out loud

jedi212guy
JediOasis, I go to school really close to you. Centre College!! And I've got lots of friends who go to UK. One guy's name is corey, and he is a SW roleplaying fanatic. You might even know him. Weird. smile

Gundark
I have managed real estate appraisal offices for the last 14 years, working on getting my appraisal license for the last 4 years, and am now 30 class hours away from submitting my application and credits to the wonderful state of PA so I can take the "big exam". I also do some extremely minor catering services for my friends.

Ushgarak
Sadly, Gundy has ruined the trend by having a proper respectable job and being a fully-functional member of society.

phinney6
Since I dont have a job I will tell you my dad's

He is a real estate Broker, a Servayer, and he works with my uncle sometimes

Texas
What's your uncle do?.....Damn I'm nosey embarrasment

Dim
Hmmm..I'm a designer. Mostly advertising and VHS/DVD packaging..

Texas
That's the kewlest job so far! smile

Dim
Thanks Tex..yaaaaaaaaaaay..someone likes my job rolling on floor laughing

finti
I work in a betting/gambling store. We handle bets on Horse racing, the national lottery and football(soccer) and then we have some slot machines that people is really feeding with money.
I have a degree within marketing, but the job market was really poor when I graduated. So I have been here ever since. I love football so I get to work with something I love which is great.

queeq
And you can skim some from the winnings. laughing out loud

finti
No I`m not Italian, we have strict rules and I`m a typical Norwegian, believing in honesty. That might be the fall of Norway we always belive in the good of people and Nations. We are very suspicious to EU though which is good.

R.C
But do you?

queeq
Probably not. big grin

Finti, stay away from the EU. We are already doomed, please do not stoop as low as we have been forced to. Do yourself a favour. big grin

R.C
My job has the rather grandious title of Technical Design Authority.

Basically I design Datacentre solutions for outsourcing contracts for ICL. I also look after the IT infrastructure of our database system, administer the databases, and look after the intranet website...

I used to be an MCSE, but that qualification expires on 31st December 2001 and I have never had the time to upgrade my exams. sad

queeq
OOOPS! Will that mean a cut in your pay?

finti
No as the old picture told; they cut his legs laughing out loud

R.C
Nah, I don't need a certificate for that!!!

queeq
That makes walking slightly more difficult.

R.C
Yes... Yes it does. laughing out loud

Breetai
I'm a system administrator. I answer users' stupid questions from time to time.

Texas
What's the stupidest question you were ever asked?

R.C
Breetai, I can sympathise with you. Prior to this position, I was on the helpdesks for 2 years and spent to years as IT Support Administrator.

Ushgarak
Oh, SOMEONE save me from real life! And this sort of thing is what I meant to be working torwards? I just don't see my motivation here.

keokiswahine
Ok, all you systems gurus and all-knowing tekkies, I need help.

Since I have a new computer, I'm giving my old one to my car pool driver's daughter. Am downloading all my stuff that I want to keep. How do I wipe out its entire memory so she can't access my charge account numbers and other personal data both in email and hard drive? I think I can find the original CDs that came with it. It is a generic clone from Computer City, Windows 95, 400 mhz.

I'd like to do this as soon as possible since school starts next week. I know just enough about computers to be a danger to society and myself. confused confused evil face

Ushgarak
Depends how deleted you want it. Do you want Windows left on?

keokiswahine
Yes, I need to leave windows on, don't I? or can I reformat the whole hard drive, and then reload win95 and the rest of the software that came. I just want to ensure all my private stuff comes off.

Ushgarak
Well, this isn;t exactly my specialist field..

Removing and replacing Windoes is a good way to ensure that all the crap you have built up on the system over time doesn;t get passed to the new owner.

If you want to be that drastic:

1. Uninstall every single thing you can from the system. Delete every deletable folder that you put on.

2. Go to Dos mode.

3. Check that either a. the cd works in DOS or b. the computer can boot from a CD. If it can do neither (you'll need the DOS cd-drivers) then this is a very bad idea.

4. Deltree the Windows directory (this will take a while).

Re-install Windows using either the d: drive or booting from the Win 95 cd.

5. Present your shiny, uncluttered computer to your friend;s daughter.

Orpheus
As the great and good Ush will know doubt tell you I don't have the best track record with computers and reliability so I will leave the tech questions for the experts.

as to the job: I am a Systems Engineer at Marconi in Chelmsford (Ihaven't lost my job..........yet)
I am responsible for may things to do with our trunked radio system, including being part of the call out team. on call 24/7 one week in every four. This can involve questions about anything from which switch to press to "Help the Suns have crashed!!!!" we use two Sun computers to manage the network. and me with my record........ smile

keokiswahine
will that wipe out my email records, too?

Ushgarak
If you have deleted every folder you can and deltree'd windows there won't be a single thing left.

R.C
Actually, you would need to delete the Program Files entry as well.

Assuming that you may have some work related stuff on there Keo, I would suggest a full wipe and reinstall.

If you have Windows 95 OSR2 release or Windows 98 then making a Start Up disk will give you all the correct drivers to run your CD for a full re-install.

Ushgarak
Just make sure you test it first; I do have a friend right now who is stuck with a DOS system because the start-up disk drivers didn't seem to work with his cd-drive, and the boot from cd option didn't seem to work at ALL...

R.C
Oh definately. Still, doesn't take much to fix up as long as you know what you're doing.

phinney6
Ohh to bad

Ushgarak
Actually, he is stuck with a Windows 3.11 system. But the principle is the same.

R.C
AKA, a rather large paperweight!!! laughing out loud big grin

Orpheus
For what it is worth I have always found formatting the hard disk to be the most suitable method of ensuring everything has been removed from the machine before you hand it over.

Just make sure that the machine will boot from the cd, it is possible to test this with windows installed.

Assuming you have a full windows installation disk or a bootable rescue cd then you should be able to fully reinstall windows on to a clean hard disk that you can be sure contains no personnal info.

Ushgarak
And it is actually Orphues here who is clocking the problem for my paperweighted freind, by simply copying the Win 98 cab files onto his hard drive...

R.C
And DON'T do a quick format, it only deletes the F.A.T, data can still be retieved with progs like Disk Doctor.

Ushgarak
Mind you, it's not as if it's going to be worked over by professionals.

Orpheus
I couldn't agree more R.C.

keokiswahine
What's the difference between a quick format and a "non-quick format" ??????

The only command I know is C:>format

Ushgarak
I think you will be fine if you just delete the stuff like I said, unless you think this person will do an exhasutive search of your drives.

keokiswahine
no, she's not a computer guru, nor is her dad. I just don't want someone to be able to extract stuff, like my credit card numbers accidently. I trust her, but don't know who else (her friends) who would be doing their school papers on it.

Ushgarak
Well, do the format if it makes you feel better. The uninstall, remove, deltree and re-install was all I ever did. Nit as if I quite have your professional life, though.

keokiswahine
meeeeeeee??????????? I don't keep very much work stuff on my home computer. Mostly I shop online, so all my account numbers need to be removed. I'll start downloading tonight. and I would like to reformat it tomorrow. Will you folks be around to walk me through this?

Can someone tell me how to do that quick check to see if my cd will regenerate the hard drive? confused big grin

Ushgarak
It's nothing to with regenerating the hard drive. The trick is to see whether your cd will work in DOS without Windows. If it doesn't then you will not be able to re-install Windows once it is removed!

Load the computer in dos mode (don't simply use a Windows dos box; if you know how to do it then the 'cleanest' option is to use Step by Step confirmation to load DOS from the Start-up menu (just say yes to everything)) and see if you have a d: drive (or whatever your cd should be).

Alternatively, set the BIOS to boot from the cd drive, if this can be done. Then leave the cd in the drive, re-boot and see if the CD boot works; it it does, put the setting back to normal when you are done.

If either of these things work, then you can access the cd once Windows is removed and re-install it.

keokiswahine
oh, dear, Ush, you kinda lost me. I don't know much of anything about the BIOS.

When I go to start, and click onto dos, and get c:>, am I in dos/dos or in win/dos???

Ushgarak
So long as you never loaded windows you should be in proper dos. Selecting it from the Star Menu isn't much good.

The BIOS is simpler than it looks; 'Boot from CD' may well just be an option in there.

keokiswahine
Win95 was preloaded on it when I bought it, I believe.

gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. My eyes were itching, so I rubbed them, and it got itchier, and I rubbed them more. Now, their totally blood shot and swollen and filled with red gooooo, and sore. Then, I remembered I had been playing with the cat. Must be cat-dust in my eyes now. I pumped some allergy eye drops in them, so I may hafta wait for some miracle to happen. eek! eek! eek!

Ushgarak
Ah, sorry. I didn;t mean loaded on the system; I meant loaded up after you turn on the computer.

If you press F8 when the 'Starting Windows 95' text appears, you should get a list of options.

Select 'Step by Step confirmation' and just say yes to everything (UNLESS it has an opttion 'WIN'; saying yes to that will just load windows. Say no to that).

This shoud leave you in Dos mode, without Windows, and with any drivers that could be loaded now loaded.

Now is the time to check wheteher you can access your cd-drive.

Alternatively, a Start-Up disk may be helpful here, though I never had much truck with them. If nothing else, one may well have the drivers you need on it.

Booting from the cd is actually the much simpler option, if you can brave the BIOS to set it.

Ushgarak
Sorry, Keo. It's 2am and I'd best settle down. Hope you have some luck working this stuff out.

keokiswahine
Will you be online this time tomorrow? well, maybe about 4 hours earlier than at this moment (since you're going to bed)? I'll be trying to reformat at that time. It is 4:18 PM Saturday right now for me.

Texas
Wow, I got a headache just reading this thread. That's some complicated stuff if you ask me. Good Luck...I remember when I got my first computer in 1991, I did something that caused the fonts to enlarge drastically and I cried because I couldn't change them back. Ever since then I refuse to go any where near the 'Control Panel' sad

Dim
laughing out loud It's not that bad Tex...

R.C
Hmmmm, personally I wouldn't follow those instructions... roll eyes (sarcastic)

Ushgarak
Well, you know far more about it than I, of course.

R.C
*Raises hands and steps back*

Just saying....

keokiswahine
OK, I spent Saturday evening posting nonquality stuff in the JCC, so have just turned on the old computer, and must move my good stuff over to this computer (all my fav links mostly).

I found 4 CDs from the original purchase from Computer City.

1. Microsoft Windows 95
2. Computer City Drivers CD
3. Word 97
4. Windows95 Starts Here. "To install Windows 95 starts here, updated edition and Windows 95 How and Why....

and I believe I have Home Esentials 98.

RC, Ush, guys, give me some guidance in a couple of hours, please

R.C
OK, here's a few things to get you started.

Find a fresh floppy disk.
Start up the PC as is and stick the Windows 95 disk into the CDROM drive.
Stick the Floppy in the floppy drive
From Windows click START -> Settings -> CONTROL PANEL
In the Control Panel double click the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS option
There are three tabs at the top of the panel that opens, the third tab is called Start Up Disk
Click that tab and click the button that says CREATE DISK
Follow the onscreen instructions.
Once complete, remove the CD, shut down the PC fully and then reboot with the Floppydisk in the drive.
You should end up with a black DOS screen with Aerm>. If not then skip the rest.
Reinsert the Windows CD ROM
At the Aerm> prompt type the following without the quotes. "D:" Press return
Hopefully you should get a Derm>
If you do then type DIR, you should get a listing on the contents of the CDROM, also the CDROM should have some activity on it as it is read.
If this all works then you have a later version of Windows 95 that makes a Start Up Disk with CDROM drivers.

Assuming all that works then you should be safe enough to format and reinstall.

keokiswahine
ok, RC. Thanks. I'll do that as soon as I get my butt off KMC, which is after I finish eating breakfast, and drag my body over to the old computer.

Just come back in a couple of hours to save my skin before I self destruct, and need a hand from over both ponds to pull me back into the boat. big grin big grin big grin

R.C
Hmmmm, just enough time to go watch Coyote Ugly...

keokiswahine
ok, RC, I'm finally heading over to the old computer. stick out tongue stick out tongue

Ush, I need you for moral support.

R.C
I don't think it will bite, but if you smell burning then panic... laughing out loud

keokiswahine
*looking for a blank floppy disk*

ok, found one. drags body and cup of coffee into the living room to the old computer.

oh, wait a minute here. gotta print out Ush's and RC's instructions before I set myself on self-destruct.

Ushgarak
Actually, RC, I meant it. You DO know more than me. It IS your job, after all!

I just had a bad experience with start-up disks, is all, so I vowed to never need them again.

Hey, Keo, I'm here... good luck...

Texas
Good Luck Keo, remember, be one with the computer!!! big grin

keokiswahine
HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!

RCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

I got down to your step 10. I got a blank A:>
I then changed to d:> drive and got "invalid drive specification". It didn't read my D drive. Of course there's nothing in it. but it should have just shown a D:>

I get a c:> prompt ok, but no D drive.

I put in my Win95 cd in drive d, closed the door, waited for the light to go out, typed in D:> and still got nothing.

While I'm waiting for you to show up, I'm gonna start moving all my fav sites to this computer. These are all my sw links to sw and GL stuff.

HELP, RCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

Texas
So much for being one with the computer, I'm outta here!

keokiswahine
gahhhhhhhhhh, RCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

So, I tried to log on from where I was. Went to C:>cd windows.
c:>\windows\win.
It defaulted to drive A. which bombed out cause I had released the floppy. stuck the floppy back in, hit retry.

Got this wonderful message. VFAT DEVICE INITIALIZATION FAILED.
A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. VFAT canno continue loading.
System halted.

*weeps uncontrollably; this monster is not cooperating*

I will just reboot with nothing in A drive, to get back into system to move fav sites to this computer by email.

Hope you come by soon.

R.C
OK, looks like you have an older version of WIN 95.

Not a big problem. You need a some files and stuff to make you CD work, but I think I can help out.

Give me 30 minutes to check somthing out.

R.C
BTW, Coyote Ugly is a great film.... smile

keokiswahine
I'm busy sending all my fav websites to this computer right now.

BTW, when I boot up, it says I'm missing some files, some .dll stuff I don't understand. sorry, totally no clue..... sad confused

R.C
Did you delete anything yet?

Ushgarak
It COULbig grin be time to check the boot from CD option if there are no DOS CD crivers there

keokiswahine
No, did not delete anything. Was checking for the ability to reformat and reload, like we discussed earlier.

Am still moving my fav web sites to this computer. geez, I must have several hundred, since I'm doing it one at a time.

Wanted to check to see if I can safely reformat, when I'm done moving all my fav web sites here, and reload.

If you're around when I'm done moving all my fav web sites, then I'll venture to reformatting/reloading once we're both satisfied I won't self destruct

keokiswahine
I'm not moving/deleting anything until you tell me it's ok.

h e l l o confused

Ushgarak
Sorry, Keo, been talking to Edna. I'm no RC, I know... but what;s going on now? I'll try and help.

keokiswahine
we're still where I can't access D drive when booting up by floppy. I have some missing files as well as having an old Win95. RC went to look through his stuff to update me. I'm still moving my fav websites from old computer to this one. Am on lunch break now. going to move laundry over in one minute, then I'll be back.

BTW, Ush, would you ask Edna if she's come across any interesting avatars for me?

Ushgarak
I'll ask her tomorrow.

Ok, Keo, that means you have no DOS drivers for your CD drive, and it is these I think RC is looking for.

What's this about missing dll files? Is this happening every time you boot up, and for how long?

keokiswahine
I think I get one error message everytime I boot up.

ok, laundry moved over. Since RC hasn't come back yet, I'm going over to the old computer to move more fav websites this way. Didn't realize I had saved so much good stuff. Alot of it is research/reference material.

Back in abit to check in. big grin

Ushgarak
When did the missing dll message thing start, and is it actually causing any problems apart from the error message?

R.C
RC did one better than that, RC made Keo a Universal Boot Disk that should run pretty much ANY CD.

OK, it's just a Windows 98 Boot disk, but it will do the job to get the system running so Keo can install Win 95.

Ok, Keo, this is what ya do.
Either format a floppy or get a new floppy. If you are formatting it must be done on a Windows 95/98 PC, NOT on NT or 2000
The file A.exe is a zipfile, I send you a PM with the location of the file for you to download.
With the blacnk disk in the floppy of your PC, run A.exe
It will ask to unzip to Aerm Click Unzip
Use the newly created disk to boot the PC you're rebuilding
It should give you three options, the top one is Boot with CDROM Support, choose this.
Once you get the prompt, put in your Win95 CD
Type "E:" (Not quotes)
Type DIR
See Listing
Tell me I'm great!!! (This better work now or I'll look dumb)

keokiswahine
today is not my day. now my printer on this comp won't print. the print command isn't reaching, and therefore nothing is happening.

ok, now I hafta find RC's PM to me.

Ushgarak
Computers give you days like that some times

R.C
laughing out loud laughing out loud laughing out loud laughing out loud laughing out loud laughing out loud

keokiswahine
WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Quit laughing at me, RC.
stick out tongue stick out tongue stick out tongue

Ok, I found your PM, printed it out (worked that time), downloaded it to my hard drive and to a floppy disk.

I'll try to print out these instructions again. BRB

keokiswahine
ok, I printed out these instructions. Seems like the page numbers on KMC don't match up with printer page numbers.

I'll close down the old computer and try these. Are you going to be around abit longer, RC? I know it's getting late in your time zone.

keokiswahine
Ush, I'm sending you a PM. Please check your PMs in one minute; I hafta type it. thanks.

Ushgarak
Well, I'll be around for a little while, but... just for the social bit, really...

keokiswahine
RC, I'm heading over to the old computer.

RCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC, don't leave me.

Ush, RC isn't online now. If you want to leave, it's ok. If this doesn't work, then I'll hafta wait until later. I'll post my results anyhow, and anyone, including RC, can leave more instructions here, in case we all miss each other with my time zone difference. sad

Ushgarak
I'll help where I can. I may be busy for a couple of day, though.

keokiswahine
ok, RC, I was reading your instructions, and I have a question.

Am I supposed to turn off the old computer, and boot it up with this new floppy Win 98 universal boot disk?

ok, I'll start from scratch. I'm logging off the old comp now.

------------

gahhhhhh. that didn't work. got a "nonsystems disk" message.
I'll bring the floppy back here to unzip.

sheesh. ok. finally got it unzipped on this computer onto a floppy. Now, I'll go back to the old comp and try again.

Ushgarak
SHOULD work as a system disk once it us unzipped.

keokiswahine
well, Ush, you folks know what you're doing. When you give me instructions, you hafta realize you're pretty much talking to the light pole in front of your house.

I had also downloaded RC's file to the floppy disk, so when I stuck it in the old comp and tried to boot up, it didn't work.

Then I brought it back here and tried to unzip it, and ran out of room on the floppy, so had to erase all data on the floppy, and go to RC's file I had saved to my hard drive. Then, opened it up, THEN, unzipping it to the floppy disk. Then it did unzip.

OK, I'm off to see the wizard in the old comp now. Be back in a few.

Ushgarak
Waiting, with a due sense of drama...

keokiswahine
*SIGH*

I still get the message, non-system disk, on the old computer.

WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I checked the floppy on this computer, and it looks like everything unzipped ok.

When I used it as a systems disk on the old computer, it didn't work, said it was a non-systems disk.

ok, RC, get out your magic box and find another magic potion.

Ushgarak
DOes it work as a system disk on your current computer? What files are on the disk?

keokiswahine
how do I copy the names, so I don't hafta type each one?

asp12dos
asp14dos
asp18dos
asp18u2.sys
aspicd.sys
autoexac
btcdrom
btdosm.sys
command
config.sys
country
display.sys
drvspace
ebd
ebd.sys
ega.cpi
extract
fdisk
findramd
flashpt
himem.sys
io.sys
keyb
keyboard
mode
msdos.sys
oakcdro
ramdrive
readme
setramd

that's it.

Ushgarak
Umm... I couldn;t rightly tell you.

keokiswahine
I'll try booting up the old comp again.

Ushgarak
LOOKS about right... command.com and so on...

Hmm. The thing is, the files you need for your CD ARE there, but I assume you don;t know how to enter them into config.sys and autoexec.bat, right?

keokiswahine
Well, I was following RC's instructions on booting up, but it doesn't work.

Before I jumped out the window, I went rummaging through all my old disks and found the original boot up disk the system tells you to make when you first start the computer. It worked as far as getting me to Drive A, like the first set of instructions from RC.

But I can't get it to go to Drive D or Drive E. I think my cd drive is E.

I'm going to boot it up again and see which file is missing; the error message shows up each time I boot up. I'll write it down this time.

Ushgarak
Sorry, Keo. From here it is just too difficult to tell what is wrong. I am not sure why RC's disk does not work and I thinm it would take too long to explain how to get the cd-drive working over the forum... maybe RC can help more when he gets back.

BTW, the cd drive letter in DOS will be whatever the start-up files tell it to be.

keokiswahine
ok, here's the error message I get when I boot up.

ERROR STARTING PROGRAM ERROR MESSAGE

The SUBS30.DLL file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880

Thanks, Ush. I'll just continue to move my fav websites over here until RC can think up another fix for me.

RC, as you think up fixes, please post here, and when I get home at night I'll try it, and post my results here, until we get this problem worked out.

Thanks again, everyone, for al your help and support. We shall overcome the monster. big grin

Ush, I tried D: E: F: none worked. I'll check again.

Ush, I checked, looked at my explorer. my cd drive is D.

Well, if the drivers aren't therem it won;t be any letter.

The only other (relatively) uncomplictaed thing I can think of is to back up any copies of config.sys and autoexec, bat that are on the old computer, then copy over the config.sys and autoexec.bat files from RC's disk onto the old computer (overwriting the files you have now backed up).

Copy all the other files from the disk onto the c drive as well, remove the floppy, then when you re-start the computer it should load as if RC's disk was working, from the hard drive.

If it doesn;t work out simply overwrite the config and autoexec files you copied over with the backups wou made.

Of course, I guess you would rather wait for RC.

At this point, I'm afraid to do anything. So, since I have lotz of web sites to send to this computer, I'll be working on this project until we can figure out how to fix it.

There's just so much everyday stuff that I want to take off, like my computer password, since I use it in my other personal access stuff, so don't want to leave that, plus other thingys to preserve our identity and privacy.

Ush, I have WinME on this computer. But I'll try RC's boot disk here to check it out.

In any case, I am afraid I have to go, Keo. This is one of those rare occasions where I actually need my strength for the morning.

Good luck with things.

ok, Ush, talk to me during the week. I'll just keep fiddling with it and moving my websites here. G'nite, friend; talk to you later. sweet dreams, and please have a safe week.

RC, USH, IT WORKED FINALLY

The first time I made the boot disk, I just used a fresh disk. This time I formatted it on this computer, WinME, then downloaded your win 98 universal boot disk on it, and tried it on this computer, and it worked, just like your directions.

Then I did it on the old computer and it worked.

OK, now, it got me to the DIR listing in D drive (cd drive). Does this mean that after I've reformatted the hard drive, this will work?

OK, if it does work, when I get to this point, what command do I do next to download Win95 on it.

YIPPPEEEEE, IT FINALLY WORKED. THANK YOU, RC. YOU'RE THE MAN TODAY. *GIVES RC A HIGH FIVE*

Oh that's great Keo, I'm glad everything worked out for you. I've been paying close attention to this thread, sitting on the edge of my seat. The drama, the excitement, the tension, when you stated that you received The SUBS30.DLL file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL:6880, error message, I was about to abandon all hope! But RC and Ush came through! That's great, This has been one heck of a roller coaster ride!laughing out loud Your carpooling friends daughter better treat your computer as if it were a gift from the pope, with all the turmoil you went through big grin If I ever have a computer related question I'm going straight to Ush and RC!smile

Keo,

With that disk you CDROM should be E:

Please try E: and make sure you can see a directory called WIN95.

The D: should be a virtual drive and not the CD, normally....

I have to go into the office , but should be able to check back in around 12, (5 hours time)

keokiswahine
RC, my windows explorer tells me the cd drive is D, but I will check it out.

would you believe I am still emailing my web links to this computer? I must have several hundred of resource links. Since these are all saved under favs, I don't know any mass way of sending these threads to this computer. BRB

E WORKS, WIN95 IS IN E DRIVE

Yes, E drive works, and Yes, Win95 is in E.

By the time you get back from the office, I'll be catching some shuteye. It's 8:18 PM Sunday here, and I get up at 0400 in the morning, so check my board time here, and you can figure when I'll be back online. I'll check here before I go to bed. You're 10 hours ahead of me, it looks like.

YIPPEEEEEEE. IT'S ALL TOGETHER. big grin big grin big grin

OK Keo, you're all set.

Once you have cleared down all the data you want to keep you can then format the harddisk, which will kill off all the other data, that you might worry about others finding.

The command is normally:

CermWINDOWS\COMMAND\FORMAT

keokiswahine
Ok, RC, I'm half way to transferring web sites to this computer, and got some stuff on hard drive to save. Have to dump all my email. I'll be ready to reformat by Saturday, if not earlier. I just want to do it when you're around in case I do something stupid, and can't reload everything correctly.

Do you know how to shut down my Outlook express email account on the hard drive, so she can't use it when she plugs in? Will the reformat kill all this stuff, too?

Again, thanks, RC; you saved me from jumping out of my window, even if I'm at ground level.
