jedi212guy
I will be a sophomore in college this year, and next year I am thinking about studying overseas. One of my options is Britain. Others I'm interested in are Mexico, Israel, and Eurpoe in general. Any advice, you craza brits you?big grin

Ratcat
Well, as I never went to college... Yes, that's right, I never went to college and yet have a great job, what does that prove??? stick out tongue

mechmoggy
The best advice my old man gave me was, "never, under any circumstances, eat yellow snow".

I'll take that to the grave with me, sound advice indeed. big grin

queeq
I'd pass on Israel for a while, unless you get a kick out of living under constant danger of getting killed.

finti
"WELL I TURNED AROUND AND I SAID HO-HO
AND THE NORTHERN LIGHTS COMMENCED TO GLOW
AND SHE SAID WITH A TEAR IN HER EYE
WATCH OUT WHERE THE HUSKIES GO
AND DON'T YOU EAT THE YELLOW SNOW" -Frank Zappa

England have some nice Universities/Colleges. I would pick one of them if I were you. Try the Manchester area. You dont have to learn a new language to study there.
Israel no way unless you want to go to terrorist school
big grin

RED DRAGON
Why not think about Scotland - great place, great people, fantastic pubs/clubs/nightlife, loads of great scenery (of course!), great places to study - you'd love it!! big grin And, no, I don't work for the tourist board - I just love it here!! big grin

KDawg
"I'm given' her all she's got Captain."
"I luv ya' always have."

RED DRAGON
Yeh right!! roll eyes (sarcastic) If you're really lucky, we might let you chase a haggis - only if you paint your face blue first, mind and have a really dodgy american/aussie/scottish accent roll eyes (sarcastic)

queeq
The only thing is, you have to yell "FREEDOM!!!" al the time. wink

KDawg
laughing out loud rolling on floor laughing laughing out loud

Ratcat
What does George Michael have to do with Scotland, he's Greek... laughing out loud laughing out loud laughing out loud

Supa
they may take our lives.. but they will never take our FREEDOM!

cool

mechmoggy
If your gonna study Engineering, you can't beat Birmingham but for christs sake don't get an engineering job over here. The term "engineer" is now affiliated with everyone from a guy who fits Sky dishes right up to a designer. It's a total bummer if your qualified and still put in the same catagory as a bunch of no-marks.

Ratcat
Yep, that's true. Within ICL Professional communities I am classed in the same group as the engineers that deliver home PC's.... It's a joke.

Ah, it's technical, you MUST be an engineer....

That isn't to take anything away from the real engineers out there by the way, just to demonstrate how wide the generalisation is.

King Jedi
If you come toScotland then you might need to learn a new language. wink

And I don't think you'd need to pay any course fees like you do in England.

Ratcat
Not even as a foriegn national?

jedi212guy
Well, I go to Centre College in Kentucky, and it doesn't cost anything extra to study abroad, except for plane tickets, and any other travel expenses. I am a religion and mathematics major. Help any? England/Scotland still a cool place to visit?

Ratcat
IS that because of some inter-college/univercity sceme or something?

jedi212guy
Yes, I think so. I wouldn't have opions as to the college I visited, I think, just the nation.

King Jedi
RC, English or Welsh student coming up here to study don't have to pay anything even though they are classed as "foreign" and the education systems are completly different. So it should be free.

I wouldn't come here. But that's just me.

jedi212guy
What's wrong with Scotland? Where would you recommend?

Ratcat
Hmmm, never go for a job in the tourist board KJ....

jedi212guy
Mexico is a high option for me because I am semi-fluent in Spanish.

Ratcat
Still can't see the high attraction of it all to be honest. Unless of course it's what you really want.

Ushgarak
KJ, English students studying in Scottish Uni's pay fees. It was the centrepoint of the Liberal Democrat education policy at the last election that thery would correct this flaw; it was in their election broadcast, and besides, I know a guy who has had to pay surrounded by those that don't.

Then again, as far as I know, it's not a matter of not having to pay fees, it's getting them deferred until later.

Anyway, plenty of fine education establishments in the UK (Oxbridge, Queens (Belfast), Imperial (London), Edinburgh, Bristol... others, too...), nearly all of them VERY keen to attract foreign students (and the ones that aren't, it's only because they are already full), so... certainly take the UK as a good option.

Dim
I think Scotland or Ireland would be fun...Mexico would be okay..but I think maybe Argentina or some other Souch American country would be better. I would have said Isreal..but with things going on there now it wouldn't be wise.

Ratcat
I guess the bottom line is where the best school for your course is. But then a pleasant locale would be an aid to study too I guess.

Anyone who decides their college/univercity based on the best beers or nightlife just isn't taking their education seriously, IMHO-OC

Edna Witch
Well England's not too bad I suppose. Depends where you go. Personally I would advise going to stdy in london. That would be the best. Why is london the best? Well I will be there of course! No English city is complete without a resident witch! Yep I will be a freshman next year! So watch out London. My havoc is on it's way! Ooh havoc! I like that!

Ushgarak
Don't wreak it TOO far out. SOme of us have to live near there.

Dim
Personally, I feel like if you're going to study abroad do it in a place that is not so familiar to you.

Texas
Dude, just go somehwere in Europe, that's the most beautiful continent in the world. Haven't been to the UK, but I'm sure it's just as beautiful. I would study in Italy, I love Florence! The chicks in Florence are soooo hot! I guess they have good schools there too big grin

Ratcat
Kinda making my point for me there Tex!!! roll eyes (sarcastic)

King Jedi
Ush I'm not sure what you said about fees is right. There is an English guy in my class and his fees are deffered the same as the rest of us even though on all his forms and applications he has to fill them in as a foreigner.

And the reason English and Welsh students were being classed as foreign was to stop them taking all the places. But I'm not sure now, what the rules are.

If you do come to Scotland then I'd pick Edinburgh.

jedi212guy
These are all interesting opinions. Problem is that now I have even less of an idea where to go! sad

Dim
Get a map and a dart...

Ratcat
Yes, that does tend to be the case when you ask a question like this.

Edna Witch
I applied to Edinburgh. They didn't want me. Just rejected me without interview. Oh well their loss!

Ratcat
They don't know what they are missing....

Zereil
Hull its great....

Um personnally I'd say it is somewhat dependent on your budget and hat you want to study, find the uni that does the best course that may be used in he field you wish to work...

Ratcat
It would seem sencible to do that...

mechmoggy
Hell NO! go for the all important point - the city with the highest pub/kebab house ratio.

Texas
One word Jedi212guy: AMSTERDAM evil face

King Jedi
Edna forget about it. You're not missing much in Edinbugh anyway.

(whispers to jedi212guy - It's great, you should go there, it's a great city with plenty happening).

DARTH LORAC
You can't beat London. It has everything that you could want. I don't know what type of music you are into, but I can assure you that there a more than enough clubs here to cater for all music tastes. Loads of Indian restraunts. Curry is the national dish after all.

One word of warning though London is expensive, very, very expensive.

The London Student population is huge, Only Manchester has more students. But there is a saying in the UK that its "grimm up north"

Cardiff is brilliant as well. All the beers and Kebabs you could ever want.

Edna Witch
Hmmm! Chieken Madras!

Ushgarak
And Edna's Indian-obsession circuits start to warm up...

Ratcat
Somehow, that is a BIG surprise to me...

King Jedi
It's not grim up north. That's a typical sterotype from someone who's probably never left his own City.

When bands tour the U.K they always say that the closer to London they get the worse the crowds are.

Edna Witch
You are surprised that I am a big fan of hot food RC? Why is it that always takes everyone by surprise?

Ratcat
I dunno, you just never struck me as the Curry addict type.

What about other hots foods, Chilli and the like?

Ushgarak
My mother comes from up north, and she assures me it is grim tehre indeed...

Dim
Indian food is wonderful..I wish I had someone here to hit a good restaurant with.

I've always thought Scotland sounds so much more intriguing than England..
*runs away before she gets stoned*

Ratcat
confused confused confused confused confused confused

Doesn't X eat huh?

keokiswahine
hot spicey food is delicious. It's the stomach that complains about the heat, as well as other parts of the body, too. big grin big grin

finti
Scotland has beautiful nature and some nice pubs as well, as for food... well they have pizza there too big grin

Ushgarak
(Throws stone at Dim)

Yeah, why don't you just go and LIVE with Mel Gibaon...

King Jedi
Because he's Australian. Or is he? What is Mel Gibson anyway?

Dim it's not intriguing for me.

Ushgarak
I can't remember who it was that cast doubt on his generally accepted Australian origins. Either queeq or RC, I would have thought.

King Jedi
I think he is another actor who changes Natonality depending which country he is in.

Edna Witch
Oh I love all types of hot food RC. Madras is high on my list but I also love chilli, ador mexican and absolutely can't get enough of thin crispy piza smothered in spicy tomato, pepperoni and lots and lots of Chilli peppers (with al the seeds too of course!)!

Oh yum! Now I'm just making myself hungry!

Dim
X isn't here yet.. When he is...then I'll go.

*throws the stone back at Ush*

I'll just go stay with KJ laughing out loud Can you imagine that one!

Edna Witch
Oh and I am 99.999% certain that Mel Gibson is Australian! Well he sounds Australian in his early films anyway like Tim!

Dim
Actually he was born in America and moved to Australia..when he was 6 I think, but he's basically and Aussie.

Edna Witch
Geez! Could the guy have confused us any more?

finti
yes by portraying a Scotsman.

King Jedi
Is that what he was meant to be in Braveheart? Kidding, his accent wasn't bad.

I'm imagining it right now. smokin'
It wouldn't be that bad. I could show you the sites, once I find any worth looking at.

Ratcat
IT was I who originally pinted out Mels birthplace, Peekskill, New York. Not sure where his father was born but his mother was an Australian.

They didn't move to Australia until Mel was 7 or 8 after his dad won big on the TV show Jeapardy.

Ratcat
Oh well, bit late is he?

Does that mean you finally got a passport. laughing out loud rolling on floor laughing laughing out loud

Dim
I guess I'd have too.. I'm sure you could keep me entertained, KJ. laughing out loud

Ratcat
Hmmm mad

King Jedi
Lets see....."how to entertain a lady"......mmmmmmm.
I could show her my Star Wars figues, then maybe my He-Men, then we could watch Scotland v Croatia which I'm sure she'd like. Then I'll tidy up the kitchen for her to use.....yes women love cooking........what else?.......maybe a bit of gardening in the pouring rain or I could show her my collection of street signs.......yes this will keep her well entertained. smokin'

Ushgarak
Stop at the football match and that's pretty much Zereil's plan for Edna, I think.

Ratcat
That's all well and good KJ, but it's Dim...

jedi212guy
The law of unintended consequences shows that all general discussions eventually go WAY off-topic, but that's ok. smile

queeq
I will be so angry when it does NOT go off topic. big grin

Ratcat
You're too laid back to ever get angry...

queeq
Ah, you think that's it?

Dim
No, Lord Chaos..

KJ, sounds good to me...but I woudln't eat any of my cooking if I were you.

queeq
Rootleaf huh? big grin

King Jedi
Dim we would have to catch smething to eat first. There are no shops or cities over here and we all wear kilts, remember. rolling on floor laughing

queeq
You have haggis.

King Jedi
Every year there is a book printed over here of stupid things that tourists ask. One American tourist went to Edinburgh Zoo and asked where the Haggis animal was. laughing out loud

Ushgarak
BTW< yesterday's Telegraph talked about the Engluish studnet in Scotland problem I mentioned, KJ. Kenneth Clarke has said he will get rid of it and Labour is taking a close look ath the problem, too.

queeq
So where was the Haggis Animal? laughing out loud

Ratcat
They're just such little cuties too.

queeq
There are? Post a pic please.

Ratcat
That's the problem, no one has ever managed to capture a photo of a live one....

queeq
Sounds like we have to form a hunt party.

Ratcat
Sounds like an excellent idea.

**Elmer Fudd voice**

"I'm huntin Haggis!!!"

queeq
"Where's that bwasted haggis?"

King Jedi
It's like Nessy. You only see it when you're not expecting to.

Dim
As long as it doesn't sneak up on me or anything.. eek!

queeq
Maybe Nessy IS the haggis animal.

Ratcat
Nah, you'd never get a Nessie onto a family sized platter...

King Jedi
Depends how big you're family is. big grin

Has anyone here ever eaten a haggis?

Another one of those tourist questions was when one guy asked what kind of rides they had at Edinburgh Castle? He thought it was a theme park.
