You know that OB1 wasn't friendly with some other aliens: Why do I sense we picked up another pathetic lifeform?
But even QGJ isn't that friendly: You almost got us killed are you brainless? and The ability to speak does not make you intelligent, now get out of hear.
Is OB1 doing the same as QGJ?
sand person no. 10
Qui Gon was only like that because Jar JAr did nearly get them killed, he was fine with the other Gungans, OB1 was just arrogant.
yerssot
I'm still not convinced. Mind you, I'm not saying he is a racist, but I think that OB1 got the arrogance from his master
Ushgarak
Obi-Wan isn;t that arrogant; I don;t know where this idea is coming from.
That 'pathetic lifeform' comment was just a joke; that was a sarcastic tone.
King Jedi
I didn't think it was a joke. He was more bemused that Qui-Gon was slowing them down again by picking someone up.
In the ROTJ script there were a few lines that were dropped where Obi-Wan said that his arrogance was one of the reasons he lost Anakin, so Lucas always had that trait in mind for the character.
yerssot
He IS arrogant:
"Why do I sense we picked up another pathetic lifeform?"
"What's this?"
As the two most important examples:
The first thing: that is NOT sarcasme!!!
The second sentense: I thought when you refer to a human, in this case Jar Jar, you use Who ???
Who's this and not What's this
ToMacco
I Qui-gon and Obi-wan both get upset when they arn't drinking.
No, seriously. Obi-wan is a punk kid. He learned from his master. Remember the look on his face when Qui-Gon introduced him to Anakin? He just smiled and shook Ani's hand like"Yeah, whatever"
yerssot
You can't argue with your master
Ushgarak
That 'pathetic lifeform' line was DEFINITELY humour from Obi-Wan. You have to understand how sarcasm works.
Qui-Gon didn;t think the humour was appropriate though...
yerssot
Sorry but here in Leuven I'm known as the king of sarcasm, and I KNOW THAT wasn't sarcasm, that was arrogance, thinking that he was better
Ratcat
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
Nope, THAT was arrogance...
Ushgarak
Indeed. I am sorry, yerssot, but I am no sure if you have mastered english language sarcasm. it tends to be done straight. Watch a bit of John Cleese in action and you will see what I mean.
Texas
Oh come on you guys, give Yersott a break, he speaks like 42 languages! Weather is was sarcasm or arrogance, Obi-Wan shouldn't have been so snotty! He should have some better manners! hmph!

ToMacco
Whatever Kenobi meant, it doesn't matter. If it was meant to be funny, Lucas needs more writers. TPM was not funny. The next two films need humor that Han Solo brought to the screen. Not that puss Binks
yerssot
It wasn't humor, otherwhise OB1 would have a little smill around his mouth.
And no I don't speak 42 languages; only 8
Ushgarak
Yerssot, a. no he wouldn't, don;t know why you think he has to smile if he is trying be be funny
b. in any case, his face is hardly look deadly serious at that bit.
ToMacco, it wasn't meant to be 'making the audience laugh' funny, or anything. But as for GL getting help with the script... yup, certainly does!
yerssot
If you make a joke even when you're deathserious you see at the face that he makes a joke.
OK, it doesn't look death serious, but remember that there are 2 suns shining in his face.
Ushgarak
Errr... ok, I'll bear that in kind...
But it was still not a serious comment. It's timing and delivery marks it out as such.
yerssot
IF it was humor, wich I dubt!!!; the timing was very bad!
Texas
The only funny moment in TPM was when R2 commented that 3PO was naked. GL cant write scripts, he needs to leave that to the professionals!!!!!!! That 'Are you an angel?' bit, Oh please!!!! I rest my case!!!!
Ushgarak
There was nothing wrong with the timing at all. It was just a quick mocking comment from Obi-Wan. Gee... it;s not like his 'The negotations WERE short' line, which WAS meant to get a laugh and was TERRIBLY timed.
yerssot
But everyone know that was suposed to be a joke, but what I see, there aren't a lot of guys around here that think the other line was a joke
Ushgarak
SIgh.. it wasn't a joke, as such, but Obi-Wan was not being serious! He was making a wry comment; it's almost exactly the sort of thing I would have said in that situation.
yerssot
If he makes a 'joke' he laughs at it, see the 'The negotiations were short' he almost burst into a laugh.
But with the other line, he doesn't laugh with it...
Ushgarak
You don't laught with mocking humour like that. Did you watch any John Cleese yet? Fawlty Towers is chock full of that sort of deadpan joke.
yerssot
But at SW there isn't a laughtape to let you know when something is a joke.
Seeing John Cleese isn't easy here; what I remember was from 10 years ago, so don't know much about them
Ushgarak
Fair enough.
The laugh soundtrack is actually there to make you laugh more, not just to telegraph when a joke has been made (otherwise all film comedies would fail), and like I say that line wasn't meant to get an audience laugh anyway. It's just the sort of sarky comment that Obi-Wan would have said in that situation. As would myself and Edna...
yerssot
I find OB1 an arrogant young lad, who became knight because the JC felt responsible for him.
As for you and Edna

tssss, there goes your private life!
(my sister is here, and she wanted the rolleyes, don't read that last phrase please!)
Ushgarak
Well, you could have told me not to read it BEFORE I read it...
Actually, Edna and myself are like that to each other all the time on these boards, but of course you can't see our faces when we do it.
yerssot
Well sorry, but at that point my sister was still here.
