Darth Revan

Wierd Al is funny especially his music videos, but I don't really take his music seriously. I don't think he really does either...

total metalhead
but thats what so great about him.

PrefectRonnykin
My favorite song of thiers right know is Silver and Cold have you seen the video for that its amazing

Placebo_fan
To tell the truth, Buried Alive By Love by HIM is a good song, but the video is better...I was also just wondering, does anybody know what sort of music Placebo are?! Because I can't put my finger on it. I think it's sort of 'a-bit-of-everything-ish' do you know what I mean?

Darth Revan

SAtown_punk
Is it trendy now to say "RIP Kurt"? I know he is considered a God by many people, and he is an inspiration for many of the bands around today, but the man is dead. And while I believe he was murdered, and that the case should be reopened, I think it's time to let it go. In fact, I also think it's trendy now to like Nirvana. My girlfriend gerw up with Nirvana, and she loves Kurt as much as anybody, and she was completely devastated when she found out what happened, but even she has let go. Why can't anyone else? I'm not saying you can't like them...I'm just saying that you don't have to say "RIP, Kurt" everytime somebody mentions Nirvava. Another thing that I hate is how most Nirvava "fans" haven't even heard Bleach, Incesticide, or In Utero. They are ALL better than Nevermind, but yet everyone still says Nevermind is their best album. Kurt didn't even like Nevermind!

No, I haven't seen the video for "Silver and Cold" yet. But I really want to.

It's also trendy to like Sublime, which bothers the hell out of me as well.

Placebo_fan
Excuse me, but I am a fan of Nirvana, and I've heard all thier albums, but I have never ONCE said, RIP, Kurt...That's just sad.

total metalhead
yeah thats what i meant. and im glad to see someone else agrees that In Utero was better than Nevermind. Bleach is just as good as Nevermind, but Incesticide aint brilliant.

SAtown_punk
true. But they're all good. In Utero is the best.

SAtown_punk
I'm not sure if it's possible to name "The best rock band of all time". Lets try for "The most influential rock band of all time". My vote goes to The Beatles.

EVANESCENCE RULES

Evil Dead
Hahahahahahahahahahaha

Maybe you are only talking to teenage kids.......you know, the kids who didn't grow up with Nirvana, only discovered them later after Kurt was dead. MOST Nirvana fans are between the ages of 25-35 and were HUGE fans of the group. We knew everything there was to know......we awaited the release of Incesticide.......we did our damndest to get ahold of old Nirvana Sub Pop singles.......we were on our chairs waiting for In Utero to come out........we paid huge sums of money to get Hormoaning when it was released in Australia (because it wasn't released here in the U.S.)..........

Your comment was just assinine to say the least. Most Nirvana fans don't know any albums but Nevermind? That is just ludicrous. We know them all........we knew them all before they were released as we would scour the earth for any news on upcoming singles/album releases.

For the record.....I think Nevermind is better than In Utero, Incesticide and Wishkah. Only Bleach and Unplugged are better.

I'm sorry but that is the stupidest thing I've ever read......seriously. Yeah.....all of us fans who packed in to their shows (my first concert was Nirvana) didn't even know their albums.......how dumb. Seriously man.....that was a retarded statement.

Jeff_Atello
I don't think it was retarted. Maybe he was talking about the people that he goes to school with. I go to school with him, and I know that 99% of the people who wear Nirvana crap don't know shit about the band. True, it was dumb to say "Most Nirvana fans," but he was just referring to the ones who are younger who say they love Nirvana. My girlfriend is 23, and she grew up on Nirvana, so I know what you mean you say that most of the people are between 25-35.
I think Bleach is their best album.

Evil Dead
He didn't say "most kids who wern't around for Nirvana and are just now learning about them"......he said Nirvana "fans". That is what was retarded.

I figured he was talking about high school kids.....which is why I put that first sentence in my post. My point was that he was classifying these kids along side the people who were listening to Nirvana 15-10 years ago.

I have no clue to the authenticity of this as I have not been in high school for many a year........but he says it is now trendy to like Nirvana and Sublime. Hey.........who would have thought it. After ten years I guess I'm finally cool..........because it sure wasn't trendy at the time to like Nirvana and nobody had even heard of Sublime until their Sublime album came out. If somebody saw me wearing a Robbin' the Hood shirt they didn't know what it meant. They didn't know who or what a Sublime was. Great to know that teenage kids would finally consider me cool..........I kind of get a kick out of that.

I thought the cool trendy thing with teenagers today was rap and trying to act like rappers? I see kids all the time wearing their pants off their ass and speaking the worst manner of English ("yo dog, how you be doin' today playa"wink....you know, pretending they are Jay Z or some other rapper. I see this every day. I thought this was the trendy thing now.........I havn't seen a Nirvana t-shirt on a teenager in a good five years (granted I don't see hundreds/thousands of teenagers per day like you guys do)......I do however see 99% of kids walking around tripping over the crotch of their pants that is hanging between their knees.

Cinemaddiction
Speaking of Nirvana fans, allow me to provoke envy with this little piece of Nirvana memorabilia I gots hanging up in my hallway.

It's a promotional clear vinyl copy of "In Utero", which I had signed by Dave at a Foo Fighters acosutic set in Richfield, MN in 2000. It came from my girlfriends cousin, who worked at Tower Records, IN SEATTLE mind you.

She herself has pretty much all their vinyl pressings, an "In Utero" tour used roadie shirt, the singles boxed set, the Kurt diary book, and whatever else she could have got her hands on during the "era". We unfortunately sold our copy of "Hormoaning" when we were strapped for cash, but luckily still have a few of the original Blue Moon Outcesticide CDs.

total metalhead

Jeff_Atello
I don't understand why anybody would buy the Kurt diary book. What's the very first thing it says in it? Do not read this. Why can't you uphold his request?

Evil Dead> I completely understand what you are talking about. Though, at my school, we don't have much of the white-rapper crap. All the jocks, however, "love" Sublime, and it really kind of gets to me, for the same reasons that you stated. The majority of them didn't know who they were until the self-titled album came out. But yes, I'm, sure you would be considered "cool" by today's high school standards.

Ever see them play live? If not.....I upstage all her memorabilia!

I never really collected Nirvana stuff. I just bought every album and single (for the B-sides).....and every tshirt. I used to spend $30 a pop on any bootlegged cds I could find, which were many as my local record store sold a shitload of them.

All I have now are all the albums......all the singles (Pennyroyal Tea included, had it for 10 years now, not an internet bootleg), original Hormoaning, Live Tonight Sold Out VHS and a bunch of played out tshirts.........Incesticide was always my favorite with Sliver running a close second. I know for sure I still have those two. I think I even still have my In Utero shirt floating around here somewhere.

I do however envy that In Utero plaque......that would look great here in my office. I can see it now......hanging over my computer, man that'd be nice.

Alpha Centauri
Anyone who still likes Taking Back Sunday after hearing any live material, need to be checked out. Medically.

Tool aren't metal. Nor are Rage.

Since when were Zeppelin and GNR, punk?

-AC

eggmayo
Zeppelin and GnR are classic rock IMO

Bierbommetje
GNR are punks

Deathblow
Absolutely.

Yes they are. They may be a little mellow compared to most thrash or death, but they're definitely metal.

eggmayo
How are GnR punk?
They dont play three chords in a song... their most punk song was Welcome To The Jungle

Alpha Centauri
"Yes they are. They may be a little mellow compared to most thrash or death, but they're definitely metal."

If you wanna put them into a genre they are Hard Rock. Which is how they actually describe themselves. They have some songs on "Aenima" with a heavily Metal influenced sound but they are by no means a Metal band. Pantera are Metal. Tool are not Metal.

-AC

Deathblow
Yep Pantera are metal, and? As far as I'm concerned, Tool have always been a metal band. They may have a lot of progressive influences, but the heart of their music is metal, always has been. Lateralus isn't as 'metallic', but Aenima is, and Undertow is pure grungy generation x heavy metal.

Rage I suppose could fit into hard rock, but then again I've heard many many different classifications of them. It's best to stick with what they're closest to; metal.

Napalm
I perfer the hard core rock

eggmayo
I'd call RATM rock-rap

Deathblow
Well no, that's like calling a band with a vocalist rock-sing. Rap is the act of rapping, not a genre.

They're somewhere between funk rock, hip-hop and metal. I would say rapcore, but they have solos and complex songs & lyrics which immediately puts them above that little sub-category.

eggmayo
True, but Aerosmith always get called the inventors of rap-rock.

Alpha Centauri
"Rage I suppose could fit into hard rock, but then again I've heard many many different classifications of them. It's best to stick with what they're closest to; metal."

That's no better than saying Deftones are nu-metal.

As for Tool having anything to do with Grunge, I can't see that at all. "Undertow" and "Opiate" have very seminal, grimey sounds but they sound nothing like their contemporaries at the time. I don't think they are closest to anything. Pantera to me are one of the bands that epitomise Metal, along with Metallica. Who I think Tool sound nothing like. Tool describe themselves as Hard Rock which is what I described them as before hand, so that's how I view them.

Calling Rage, Metal just seems obsurd.

-AC

Silver Stardust
Meh, I really don't know what RATM and Tool really are, as they can be classified as several different things (RATM especially). I usually, for the sake of simplicity, just call them hard rock.

Good god, Sam, looking over your original lists...shock

My favorites:

RATM
Tool
APC
NIN
Nirvana
Incubus
Deftones
Lacuna Coil
Head Automatica (wtf would they be classified as anyway?)
Trapt stick out tongue
Crossfade stick out tongue
Alice in Chains
Pearl Jam
Radiohead
Green Day (older stuff, though, think "Dookie" era)
Sublime
Ramones
The Clash
The Misfits

There's a sampling of what I listen to...

And I noticed a lot of stuff about Nirvana fans...well, I'm nearly 19 and I grew up listening to Nirvana. So there stick out tongue

eggmayo
Whats wrong with Nirvana?

Silver Stardust
On previous pages in this thread there was a lot of stuff about how there's a lot of teenagers who're fans of Nirvana but didn't listen to them until after Kurt died...so I'm pointing out that there are teenage fans of Nirvana that HAVE listened to them since before then.

Alpha Centauri
"Head Automatica (wtf would they be classified as anyway?)"

Disco/Party Rock.

Everyone that I've read has at least one dreadful band. Trapt, they had the one song that was made famous by being on a commercial for a wrestling PPV. Then faded away.

-AC

eggmayo
I have one problem with that... if I was listening to Nirvana before Kurt died I would have been 4 years old.

Silver Stardust
I like some of Trapt's other songs, so...

eggmayo -- I was 5 when Nevermind was released...I wasn't kidding when I said I grew up listening to them.

Deathblow
AC - 'grungy' not grunge, I meant grungy as in low-tech and raw, not the genre.

Well, I can honestly say that I have never really encountered much objection to calling Tool metal. I really don't think they can be put into one particular category, but all the same, if they could, I would say metal everytime. Metal isn't all short sharp bursts of noisey yells and big power chords, just because Tool are far more artistic and complex than Pantera, Sepultura, Slayer etc doesn't mean they aren't metal. Opeth are one of the most musically complex bands I've ever heard (their best song is around 20 minutes long), and they are pure metal. Whats so absurd about Rage being metal?

Can i just take this moment to say it's good to have you back man, haven't had a decent debate in this forum for ages.

Totally smokin'

I'll admit to liking all those bands at one point, but I never recall liking GC. I've never even owned one of their CD's confused

eggmayo
I didn't hear of Nirvana until I was 13, I didn't really like rock or metal till then. However, now that Dimebag Darrell died, unfortuanetly more people will be listening to them, like with Kurt's death. I actually started listening to Pantera and Damageplan 4 days before Dimebags death, and I was planning to go see them on tour.

Silver Stardust
I've listened to Pantera for a while...Damage Plan was supposed to play here two days after Dimebag's death sad

eggmayo
I was gonna wait for them to have a UK tour.

Alpha Centauri
"Well, I can honestly say that I have never really encountered much objection to calling Tool metal. "

I don't object to it. You and anyone can call them whatever, I just don't see how if they could be put into a catagory, it would be Metal.

"Whats so absurd about Rage being metal?"

Because they absolutely sound nothing like metal to me. Even the most non-metal sounding metal bands sound nothing like Rage. Rage to me are Rock. Pure Rock. Their music is more Hiphop than most Hiphop in many cases also.

Thanks for the welcome back also.

-AC

rockchickgem
Green Day, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, the rest are in my profile

Deathblow
Fair enough. Out of interest then, how would you categorise them?

Their songs are certainly consistently heavier than most alternative rock bands, and they have a number of songs which have no rapping. I wouldn't hesistate to call songs like Killing In The Name, Settle For Nothing, Wake Up, Revolver & Tire Me metal.

"I wouldn't hesistate to call songs like Killing In The Name, Settle For Nothing, Wake Up, Revolver & Tire Me metal."

"Settle For Nothing" and "Killing in the Name" are what I would class as Heavy Funk Rock maybe. Except the former has more of a Classic Rock feel due to the nature of the solo. "Revolver" has one of the best Rock riffs I've ever heard. "Tire Me" is very fast, that's the only Metal element I can see in it. If I could classify Rage it would be Rock/Hip-Hop hybrid.

Not one of those bands like Limp Bizkit who have lame Rock with a man rapping on it. Rage were always Rock and Hiphop at their somewhat purest, blended together seamlessly. With obvious funk influences.

Afro Cheese
I always called RAtM rap-rock. There may be a better term but it doesn't matter all that much to me.. they were a good band that's all I care about.

Deathblow
One of Morello's best solos, too. Well there you go, Rage often have harder, chunkier riffs, abrasive vocals/screams and thats enough to push them beyond just rock to me. But not to you.

Thats exactly what I said at the top of this page. Well in any case, if we want to get really official, I believe Rage have recieved numerous nominations under the metal category. Their style really does have the metal edge, when I hear Rage, I think of mosh pits and stage-dives, and i judge by my insticts.

Silver Stardust
I agree.

And bands like Limp Bizkit only wish they could be a quarter as cool or good as RATM cool

furryman
Zebrahead are awesome stick out tongue

Tptmanno1
I allways pushed RATM past convential rock for many reasons.
A) the bassist has a much different roll in "traditional" rock, Mainly laying down the chords and backing up the guitarists. Commerfield had his own licks and was a frontline roll in the band, in somesongs, his basline was more complex than the gutar.
B) Morrello uses way too many effects to be classifyed as rock. Most rock gutarists focus more on the chords and have a different style than Morrello...
C) The Drums, while the most "rock-ish" part of RATM, his lack of tom fills push his stly mor towards Jazz or Metal than rock...
I swear there are parts in Sleep now in the fire, that are a modifyed swing beat...
D) Zack, dur...

I can't really classify them, their just RATM...

Silver Stardust
They have their own genre laughing out loud

They really do blend so many different ones that it is very hard to put them in just one.

There is no way I didn't forget at least one band but this is what I've got for now.

BTW about Rage being metal or not, if I had to categorize them I'd have to go with something like Rap-Core Or Rap-Metal but that would just be out of lack of options, I agree most with TP, their uncategorizable (I think I just invented a word eek! ).

Silver Stardust
I love Breaking Benjamin.

And while I can see the argument for Tool being classified as metal, I really don't think that you could classify APC as metal...

AcrypT
I was just trying to be "politcly correct", to spare me long arguments on how I dared clasiffy or not classify a certian band as metal.
I don't see how APC could be concidered metal either but I've heard them being called metal on numerous ocasions so I was just being safe.

Silver Stardust
I've never heard anyone call APC metal before...messed how strange.

People are weird.

AcrypT
Yea people are defenatly wierd laughing

MornGlory
is Foo Fighters punk... dont think so

AcrypT
doh I forgot Foo Fighters!

I can't see how they'd be concidered punk, they don't sound like punk, they don't look like punk, I'd say they're just plain old rock or Alternative.
