plz, use minuscel, easier for the brain to understand that...
Hm, you mean, like the Hobbit theme (happy, sorrowless), the Ring theme (doomful), the Rohan theme (sad, shows a portrait of Rohan)..?
turin
well the main theme that carries through all of lord of the rings and silmarillion is the battle of good vs. evil, and at what cost and sacrafice it takes to defeat evil. plus i really like the idea of no matter how hopeless the cause, it is worth it, i.e. frodo destroying the ring, the noldor in beleriand, beren and luthien ........
Lady Ellie
And also close friendship. Sam will help Frodo, no matter what!
Ariadne
Maybe something about courage and strength....
Bloom4ever
Dont forget a main one- power
Fire
well you can also add this one
if all good unite they can overcome even the most powerful evil
(always reminds me of WWII)
Darth Revan
Power is a good one, also one related to that is how power can corrupt you heh like our government
Verity
Friendship, loyalty, power, choice, responsability....Life, death...The way we take care of our world today, looked at from an ecological point of view..Gosh!, there's so much!http://www.killermovies.com/forums/images/moresmilies/ermm.gif

If you have't done your report yet, I strongly suggest you read the preface to the book (2nd edition,) which suggest there are no real "themes" and certaintly no allegory to actual current events (at the time) or history, at least it was strongly his intention, as he says, that it would not be that way.
aniron
sacrificing ourselves for example arwens mortallity, Sam/frodo and their life in the shire Smeagol gave up compleatly.
the lotr is about friendship though, and how power effects ppl differently, oh why can't my school study lotr?
the witch king
the lord of the rings bears the themes of carnage and casualty, friendship and loyalty, and that as great evil purges the lands, as it does in many cases today, shall eventually be defeated. Although I cannot do your report report for you, you can use these presented themes on it.
Iirima
Shadowy_blue's said it all...
darbanana
LOTR is really about the bond of friendship/loyalty. Examples: Sam and Frodo, Legolas and Gimli, also Legolas and Gimli with Aragorn, Shadowfax with Gandalf, also the loyalty to your land, (aka Faramir)... I think possibly a statement saying the theme would be: Self-sacrifice because of friendship and loyalty... does that make any more sense to you than it does to me?
Iirima
Yea, makes sense to me!
darbanana
good... the theme or LOTR is so confusing, oh well...
angelsflame265
I don't know if anybody said this one but the environment theme is big with the ents and that not all wounds/hurts heal, theres a lot of themes
