I've never seen the original why do you think its the best horror movie ever?

BackFire
ah, you asked a mouthful my friend. Well, there are numerous aspects of this film that I love, and I will attempt to discuss them with you here.

First off, The movie is unlike any other film ever made (even the remake). It has an extremely isolated feel to it, and it's one of the only movies that successfully combines aspects from both psychological horror films, and slasher horror films. Often the film is disturbing and creepy from the images we see on the screen, and just as often we are disturbed by the images we don't see, but that is insinuated. The film perfected the art of making the viewer rely on his imagination to finish the acts began on screen, it takes the movie to a whole different level.

Next is Leatherface, he is, frankly, the ultimate killer...that doesn't mean he's the most powerful, or deadly or anything, it means he is the most intriguing, and, more importantly, realistic. He's completely believable and too me that makes him much more frightening then any other of the slashers, because you may fear them, but deep down you know there is not any real danger from them, but with leatherface, it is completely possible for a person like that too exist. Also he has a childlike innocence too him that is incredibly likeable, but at the same time he is bashing people with a hammer, it's really conflicting and add's a depth to him that no other villian has.

Finally, I just find this film extremely watchable, it's flawless in my eyes, from the grainy picture, to the abstract soundtrack, it is very very eerie, forboding and believable. Plus parts are just damn funny. So, I hope this review helps you decide to go see it, because I've yet too meet a true horror fan who has disliked it.

Pablo G
TCM was OK, defintetely not my favorite horror movie but good.

stinkfist462
ive never seen it either

BackFire
It's definately a must for any horror fan.

Evil Dead
Never seen TCM? Holy poop on a stick........you don't know what you are missing. Great flick........imagine all of the psychological/slasher films you've ever seen (which were rip offs of TCM)....then double how much they own.....what you will have is TCM.

Pirate_Girly
the NEW TCM is on my faves list. and not to be crude but the Original wasnt that great and im just stating my opinion about it..But back in the 70's when it was made, it was some big **** ya know..and i rented it 2 weeks ago and i was like..um...this isnt anythin compared to the new one
I just wanted to state my opinion

goo
thanks bf i'm new here

BackFire
hey, no problemo man, I'm here to help out you guys, welcome to the board.

Evil Dead
Pirate Girly.........you have the right to your opinion.........too bad your opinion is wrong.

Pirate_Girly
how exactly is that?

Evil Dead
Because I said so..............

BackFire
The original is better then the new one, simple fact right there.

h0ck3yh0rr0r
original Tcm is always a classic. i also recommend the Lecter Series (manhunter, SOTL, Red Dragon and Hannibal) o yea and soon there will be the Lecter Variation

Tired Hiker
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was an excellent movie.

Lord_Andres
I don't get it, The remake was scaryer, better actors and, and better filmed!!!

Lord_Andres
the original is NOTHIN compared to the remake

girneto^_^
<.< I liked it cuz it was f***ing creepy. <.< Im never going back to the goth club in texas now. hahahaa

girneto^_^
Sorry, Lord_Andres, I refuse to watch the remake. Looking at the previews pissed me off. >.<

J-Sin.VS.Fred-D
origonal was good for its time, but comparing it to the remake the remake is better. Also, the origonal DID start a genre of new movies but i have to disagree with the arrogant brown-noser Evil Dead, all new slashers/psychological horror movies are NOT copying tcm because copying it would be taking the story and just changing it. Evil Dead, YOUR opinion is wrong.

Outsider4life
Is it the best?????....it is a horror great for sure the mix of psycology and pure scares are great its not all about gore making it special BUT it does scare and it does make you feel slightly off colour some times i think it is great but not thebest

Pirate_Girly
Lord_Andres i am 100% with you on this big grin

BackFire
The original is arguably the most innovative horror film of the past 50 years, when it came out there had never been anything like it, nothing had been as raw, real or powerfully abstract. The movie was both hilarious and terrifying at the same time. And the fact that even today, 30 years after it's original release, it still holds that same power to terrify, shows how great it truley is.

The remake was just another mundane modern slasher, no psychological elements of the original, none of the brilliant childlike qualities the original LeatherFace had in the original, which made him even more creepy. It was just typical, it had nothing special at all.

The original will always be better if for no other reason, then becuase of it's unarguable innovation to the horror genre.

Jason420
the original sucks i didnt like it in my opinion i just saw it 2 days ago and i thought it was dumb i like remake better

Dario Argento
The remake is one of the worst films I have ever seen! Even though I didn't expect anything it disapointed me.

The original is a masterpiece and deffinetely the scariest movie I have ever seen.

Jason420
the original was just one of the worse movies i have ever seen in my life new one much better

swordmaster
the fact that the original was just a crappy little independent film, showed in very few theaters compared to todays terms. and still turned out to be the giant it has become proves its better. the fact that people would walk out of the theater saying how it was the most bloody, gorey movie theyd ever seen, when hooper only used an ounce and a half of blood is truly amazing. the new one was alright, but the only thing it had over the old one was special effects and jessica biel in a water soaked white tanktop.

BackFire
Jason, you may find it helpful if you actually give concrete reasons of having your opinions, people may take you a bit more seriously if you do.

From what I can tell, you haven't given one valid reason why you dislike the original other then, "it's dumb", such a vague statement makes your opinion questionable and meaningless to us.

Tired Hiker
If the original TCM was never made, the remake would never have come out. So, the original is definitely more important, as well as more aesthetically pleasing. The tension felt real, not forced like the re-make. Plus the chick who survives in the original is way more sexy than that new polished chick.

BackFire
Well, it's unarguable that the original is one of the most important horror films ever made, it paved the way, and inspired many many horror films after it.

tabby999
i dunno, if it hadn't come out, then something else would have. its not like the other people had nothing to base their Jasons/Micheals?Freddys on, they had zombies and vampires and frankenstein, and if you look at them, most of the classic people (jason/myers/freddy) all have influences from all of the afformantioned horror characters

Jason420
I dont care what you think I dont need to prove anything to you WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?! Happy Dance

BackFire
Good, then just know that no one thinks you know what you're talking about, probably because you don't.

Jason420
i dont want to waste my time with you anymore cause all you do is complain

h0ck3yh0rr0r
remake was awful. i didn't like the acting much. Original is waayyyyyy better.

Voorhees
TCM original is the greatest movie of all time. It is no comparison to the new one. but i did like the new one nonetheless. but i must say what kind of TCM movie doesnt have grandpa with a mallet?????? answer me this!!!

BackFire
That's a damn fine point sir...

Voorhees
Thank u smile *bow*

wicker_man
Haven't seen the remake still pretty shook up after seeing the Psycho remake, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is indeed a classic of the horror genre certainly up there with the Shining, Halloween, the original Psycho and The Omen, unlike the apperaces of other big screen movie maniacs such as Micheal, Jason & Freddy, Leatherfaces arrival was sharp, fast and brutal much like the character himself, although lacking the flare of Micheal, Jason or Freddy, he makes up for in sheer brutality, the sudden apperance of him is certainley a classic moment in the history of horror films up there with other classic scenes including the Psycho shower scene, the head popping out of the boat in Jaws and the chest burster in Alien, like Jaws leatherface is vicious and brutal..a must.

DeNiro
Back Fire stated perfectly in the first post why the original TCM was so great. The movie is a classic and will always be one of my favorite horror films next to evil dead evil dead part two the shining and nightmare on elm street.

but my favorite new aged horror film that was made like a 70's horror film is also made by one of my favorite singers Rob Zombie's House of a Thousand Corpses. this will probaly be my favorite new aged horror films for a long time to come i absoulutly luv this movie it was one of the best horror films that has been made in the last 15 years

Zilverz
I just watched widescreen dvd last night.
my thoughts:

I thought it was an awesome horror movie. I was under the impression that it was going to be a little more gorey, but it still achieved a terrifying greatness. The Hitchhiker and Franklin were funny ****ers. The guy that played the hitchhiker totally achieved the whacked out of his mind personality. The 2 women were hot. I forget the name of the girl that survived .. but she did well at passing off that she was hysterical.. so what happened to the black truck driver ? did he just keep haulin ass ?

Evil Dead
I have not read this whole thread..........but I'm sure Backfire will agree with me when I say this.

If you are a horror fan and you just saw the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie two days prior to posting in this thread, we don't care at all what you think. Like it, love it, dislike it, hate it..........all the same to us.

One could also make the argument that you're not as much of a horror fan as you like to fancy yourself as you've just seen one of the most respected and appreciated horror movies of all time two days ago.

Evil Dead
I just read the rest of the thread........Zilverz.......that comment was not directed towards you. It was directed towards Jason somebody or another who was posting on the first two pages.

If you like the craziness of the characters in TCM and aren't really up for all of the great horror.......watch TCM 2. It's a bit over the top with the craziness of the characters that you liked in TCM.

BackFire
TCM 2 is more of a cheesy comedy then anything, plus it has dennis hopper go crazy with a chainsaw....and comedy gold ensues.

Voorhees
I loved TCM2. For some reason it was banned in Australia but i ordered it from U.S ages ago and i loved it. Hopper is a legend in my mind.

eggmayo
is the original tcm like really violent or would it be a pg now?

BackFire
Well, many people falsely percieve it as gory, when in reality only a few ounces of fake blood are ever seen on screen. The worst stuff that happens in the film is implied, meaning that it isn't explicity shown, rather, it we see a part of the horrid act, and the rest is left up to us to finish in our minds. The film would probably be rated R soley for the acts the film suggests, even though they aren't shown in their entirity.

Funny thing though, if the PG-13 rating existed when the film was made, it probably would have gotten that rating, since they were going for a PG rating at the time, which was the only rating between G and R.

Lord_Andres
lets face it, the remake had everything the original didint have, it had better acting(THATS A FACT) gory'er, scaryer(I didint jump from my chair one time when I watched the original, but did more then once in the remake, u can't say the original is better, cause it just isint, backfire, if u know so much about movies u should know better then saying the original is this god of all horror movies, cause it isint, no way!

Cowboyography
I have watched both recently, I did like the new one, Biel is SMOKIN!!! however the original cant be beat!!!!!!

mook
ive seen the original and thought it was brilliant. it was actually banned on video in England for years so when it finally was released i watched it and wasnt disappointed.

i thought the plot, characters and atmosphere were great.
i havent seen the sequels or the remake and dont plan to.

BackFire
The acting in the new one was worse then the original, the original actors over acted to the point of being humerous, which made the extreme terror brought out on screen even more shocking, because we weren't expecting it.

The remake was a typical modern horror movie, nothing more, it didn't have anything unique, different, or creative in any way. The original, on the other hand, is one of the most innovative and creative horror films of all time, from it's style, to it's music, to it's storyline and presentation. Everything you said is so wrong that I can't even begin to comprehend how a person can be so glaringly incorrect.

Most people who know anything about horror movies recognize the FACT, that, like it or not, the original is a god among horror movies, it is a classic, and will always be remembered as such. All of the most knowledgable regulars here in the horror forum will agree with that.

Lord_Andres
but it ISINT better in anyway, show a person that dosent know shit about horror movies, the remake and the original, I'l bet my ass on that he will say the remake is better. I my self and 15 of my friends went too see the remake, and then a few days later, we all watched the original, after seeing the original EVERYBODY said that it sucked bigtime. and of story IT SUCKS!!!

BackFire
This raises the question, why would I care what someone who is ignorant about horror movies thinks of a horror movie? That would be like someone who knows nothing about video games going up and telling me "hey, this game sucks, but I've never been much of a gamer". Bassically it's just showing that people who don't know anything about horror films aren't going to apreciate what is undeniably a great, innovative, horror movie.

And for you're information, since you decided to bring in your personal friends into this discussion, as if that gives you're shallow argument any credibility. My friends, some of which don't know diddley about horror movies, and some who are just as knowledgable in the subject as I am, all saw the original and the remake, and all think the original is far supperior.

The only thing the remake has that the original doesn't is better production value, but of course, no true horror fan will care about something as trivial as that, since most of the best horror movies have a very small budget, and are made using the directors skill, rather then loads of money, which was not the case for the remake. Made using loads of money, but very little skill, and did nothing new.

End of story.

Lord_Andres
lets say the remake version had been made instead of the original version, who then do u think would be the king, huh?, thats right the remake version

BackFire
I don't think so, the original still would have been more unique and different from any other horror films ever made. The remake was a typical horror movie, nothing more.

mook
i cant really take full part in this discussion as i have not seen the remake but the original is one of THE classic horror films. it is a superb piece of cinema.

Lord_Andres
just wait til u see the remake, ahell of lot better

BackFire
Actually, most horror fans feel the exact oposite.

Lord_Andres
no they don't

tabby999
bull shit. i've seen it availabole in the the loval vid shop,. oh and i'm still drnuk fsorru

Evil Dead
so a horror movie is supposed to make you jump out of your seat? That's what I just read in Andes' first post on this page........

You are talking about slasher movies my friend........the movies where the killer jumps onto the screen real fast to make you jump.......that is the lowest denominator among scares.......those tactics are used only when the story itself isn't enough to scare......"hey, our movie isn't going to scare anybody so we need to put in a bunch of jump scares"

If a movie's plot is good.......it does not need to resort to such cheap tactics. How many jump scares are there in Psycho? How about The Shining? Exactly..........they didn't need them, they had plots. Same goes for TCM.

Lord_Andres
I've said it before, and will say it again, the plot in TCM is so bad that it could just as well be a porn

mook
its a good plot, builds up the creepiness factor, keeps you guessing.

Lord_Andres>just wait til u see the remake, ahell of lot better

i dont intend to watch the remake- ive never been happy with remakes, especially or great films. (for example i wont watch the ring remake)

Lord_Andres
fool of a mook, all the remakes I've seen and almust everybody I've asked, say they are better, exept maybe psycho

Evil Dead
Did you ever watch the piece of crap "Planet of the Apes" remake Tim Burton did a few years ago? He killed it........violently.

The Amityville Horror and Dawn of the Dead remakes that are coming out next year will also be inferior to their originals. There is no way to improve upon them.

That said........I am going to check out the TCM remake when it comes to dvd.........only because I've heard it isn't a remake at all. They don't even use the same story.........they also focus on Leatherface as a villain whereas in the original Leatheface was merely one of the villains of the film. I've heard it wasn't a remake at all.......they merely made a movie with a character called Leatherface and slapped the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" name on it. I liked TCM the Next Generation so who knows.......I might like this also, even though it isn't actually a remake/re-telling of the original story.

h0ck3yh0rr0r
more remakes sad, more upside down smiliey faces sad

Evil Dead
Andres........please inform us which remakes you've seen that were better. You've said that almost all were........please name some.

Lord_Andres
well too start with, TCM was muck better, The Thing, The Mummy, Night of the living dead, and I tought that Planet of the abes was also better, but Psycho only got worse

Evil Dead
I can totally agree on the remakes of old horror movies like The Thing, THe Blob, The Mummy...............but the Night of the Living Dead remake being better? No way.............
