Phoenix
I don't like many, and they have to be done well. For example, I detest West Side Story, but adore Moulin Rouge!

What about you guys?

mechmoggy
Dear god no. eek!

Augeybana
Musicals are pretty sappy but Chicago was good and Moulin Rouge was alright but c'mon West Side Story is a classic.

Corran
Grease is the word.

Augeybana
Good on eI heard there making a third one with John Travolta.

Corran
Nooooo, grease 2 was poor, Grease 3 would just be awful.

Augeybana
I heard it about newton john and travolta kids in the 1970's as the musicals.

GordonSkywalker
Grease is cool, but I don't like musicals generally. I have seen West Side Story, Grease 2 and Moulin Rogue and hated all three.

Augeybana
Really.I could understand Grease 2 and Moulin Rouge but not my West Side Story.

GordonSkywalker
No offense to West Side Story but my sister played the movie over and over and over and over again. big grin

Mujaffa
i like south park the moviewink

GordonSkywalker
Is that a musical?

mechmoggy
We've had this discussion before and it couldn't be resolved then.

IMO South Park the movie is NOT a musical. My reasoning: -

I like South Park the movie. I don't like any musicals. stick out tongue

Augeybana
It was an musical.

GordonSkywalker
Never seen the movie, only the series when I was at my sister's.

Augeybana
Yeah very funny they where oscar nominated for best for a song called "BLame Canada" and other songs for that matter Robin Williams did a good job singing it.

GordonSkywalker
As a general rule of thumb: I hate musicals!

Augeybana
I hate them too but some came across as not bad and I mean some.

GordonSkywalker
Speaking of musicals ever seen the 'musical' episodes of Xena and Buffy?

Augeybana
Never Buffy bu did see Xena.

GordonSkywalker
What was your perception of it?

Augeybana
It sucked a little weird for a action show to have a musical.

Phoenix
Buffy musical was v. funny - my mate has it on dvd. Thought they actually had talent, but I downloaded the songs off the net, and they sound really bad when you're just listening to it, with nothing else good to look at!

Augeybana
Yeah muscals for that Xena as teribble even that character that was playing the long lost brother of that guy that can't fight good was stupid very stupid.

Kes
This is an old thread but hey! I saw the xena episode it was ok considering that i don't really like Xena and watched this episode! Hate Buffy, I mean the stories are crap, they just like how do we kill this monster and at the end fight and all done! I like musicals I thought Moulin Rouge was good, mas ewan as a great voice, i guess i was suprised i was expecting something really bad, liked chicago to, very entertaining. there are great classics like My fair lady, and 7brothers for 7wifes or something like that! Evita wasn't that bad though everything being sang..ouch!

diegocala
I LOVED the Simpson's musical!! wink cool

Phoenix
was it called something like 'seven wives for seven brothers'?

Kes
Probably yeh. its really old! they kidnap the women then cause an avalanche so the girls era stuck with them for the winter and stuff happens.

squarn

grease is the word

LindsIsTightK
I only like the really really old musicals, like Oklahoma & Carousel. Shirley Jones is wonderful in those movies :-D What are all you people talking about? Grease and Moulin Rouge, those are crap, you need the classic musicals, those are the real thing~

ChinaNiki
"seven wives for seven brothers?"

It's actually Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. wink

I loved Danny Kaye in A Jester in King Arthur's Court. He was a great physical comedian. laughing out loud

Godshinto
favorite Musical is now Chicago I went to see it at the theaters and I was taping my feet and almost started singing along with movie ALMOST

ChinaNiki
Does CATS count. I know there is a video of it, but was that just a taping of a show or was it performed specifically for taping?

BackFire349
i love singin in the rain.

chica16
i like.... grease, the sound of music (i'm sorry i really like it), west side story,

i hate moulin rouge and chicago.... awful
what grease 3???? nooooooooooooooooooooo

Godshinto
How can anyone hate West Side Story, one of my favorite songs come from that movie "I Feel Pretty" oh so Pretty and witty, it made it even more special to me when Adam sandler Sang it in "Anger Managment"

Kes
I think they did it specially to be taped so I guess it counts. I liked it a lot by the way big grin

Godshinto
They actually tpe random shows, for several reasons one for the actors so they can see any kind of flaws or anything they have to work on. Two it can be sold also, as the actors change the movie changes.

Kes
I've only seen one. And it was taped to be sold or broadcast.

Godshinto
I live in New York every couple of year I spend a week in the city and see all of the plays on Brodway usually for my birthday. It's quite expensiv though ticket's costing on average $50 a ticket, I have seen alot o plays though.

Kes
Men I had a chance to see Chicago but couldn't convince anyone to come with me messed I would have loved to have seen that one.

Godshinto
It's already available on DVD check out IMDB

Kes
Chicago the play. Not the movie. I don't have a DVD!I know its sad!

Rave
The beat one's are Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Sound Of Music.

Kes

Well pretty much anything with Gene Kelly and Fred Astair (sp)
A movie with Sinatra, they're sailors and I believe its called New York.

wicker_man
I think the title you are looking for is Anchors Aweigh (1945) as i can't ever recall Frank Sinartra doing a film called New York.

Kes
Ah cool be. They sing some song about New York thou.

wicker_man
Yep most likely as the film is a tribute to New York, it was also the first Hollywood film to be filmed on location.

buffymitch
I don't know that many musicals but my my favorite musical is Moulin Rouge.

chez
Probably My Fair Lady, Joseph, The Sound of Music, many Gilbert & Sullivans .

My all-time favorite will probably always be Les Miserables, though I guess it hasn't been in film form as a musical. Not the tap-dance your cares away sort of musical - quite serious, nearly everyone dies, but very moving and full of universal characters.

Looking back, it really is kind of disturbing that, at 8 years old, I knew almost all the words, including those to the whore songs... embarrasment Wasn't allowed to SAY a lot of these words, but I still KNEW them... wink

I haven't seen many of the newer musicals, but my favorite has always been Les Miserables. That's one musical no one could exactly call "sappy" (except for the love story sub-plot, but I always skip those bits anyway).

Cats, The Sound of Music, select G&S plays (and a few other musicals I can't think of right now) are pretty good, too.

big gay kirk
right, from the top....
1 Blood Brothers... Willy Russell's finest work, by turns humourous, dark and touching... without giving away the plot, this is probably going to make you cry...
2 The Happiness of the Katakuris... a tragedy, a bizarre death or three... and a song and dance to put it all right...
3 Oliver! need I say more....
4 The Rocky Horror Show... this can be watched and enjoyed on so many levels... a fun evening out, a pastiche of 1950s sci fi, or a learned and deep study of what individual freedom and the pursuit of happiness really means...
5 Chess... by the boys from ABBA... cos I just love a good love story..
6 Miss Saigon... the best modernisation of Madame Butterfly ever...
7 Bugsy Malone... the splurge guns are worth the admission price alone...
8 Tommy... more of an opera, I know, but the Who's magnum opus deserves a mention...
9 tell me on a Sunday... especially with Denise van Outen... remember, it doesn't matter if... he's married....
10 Niggle... my own, never to be performe d musical version of Tolkien's greatest story... "Leaf by Niggle.."

Dom_Billy007

i love well musicals that are well done. the more original the better.
here's sum of my faves...

MOULIN ROUGE: a break through in the modern musical. extremely
clever with the composistion, as well as adding a nice
twist to the classic story of forbiden luv.

CHICAGO: the movie version is great and perhaps there has never
been a more charismatic character than that of Billy Flinn.

LES MISERABLE: this is simply great story which i find quite tear
jerking.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF: come on, who could not love a character like
Tevye or forget a song like 'Rich Man?'

CATS: who could of imagined that this idea would ever of worked? All
of Andrew Lloyd Webber's work, seems to have the same vibe.
