It is by Rhiannon Lassiter. There is "Hex", "Hex: Shadows" and "Hex: Ghosts"

They do involve an element of adventure, but its a bit more sci-fi than fantasy. There's a bit of philosophy in there too, and the over all message is one of tolerance.
