lil bitchiness
Its a good idea, sure! There are going to be problems or such, but sure, its a good idea! yes

The thing is that its going to cost 20 million dollars to go there confused

SilverFighter
Bad idea! take the money from those projects and help feed those 3rd World countries.

lil bitchiness
Thats not going to happen though...if it hasnt happen by now, it isnt going to happen.

less than 1% of money spent on weapons was enough to put every child in school by year 2000 and yet it didnt happen!

The Omega

SilverFighter
That's so sad the world is doing that. I know World Vision is always in need of help for foundations but most of the government only give very little money. Millions for spaceships instead of feasts for the hunger, that's a shame.

Trinity_Matrix
Hmmm...humans going to Mars can be a good thing and a bad thing. The good part of it is all the new technology that will be formed, like Omega said. The bad thing is, well, look what we've already done to this planet, so what if we just end up going and destroying another?

And I think the cost will be more like 60 billion, not 60 million...and that's a damn lot of money blink

lil bitchiness
thumb up absolutely! Thats a great point!! Recycling of water...it will help our technologies as well!!

SilverFighter
thumb up Great point and maybe we should clean up our planet before we go and start making a mess of another planet.

el_barto
bad bad BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lord Soth
Terrible idea to start funding such a thing when the economy's in danger. It will end up being a good idea after we ruin Earth

silver_tears
I think it's a bad idea, unless absolutely necessary.
I mean why not deal with problems in our world now, like violence, and murder, and crime, and hunger, and poverty, and etc, instead of funding a mission that may not even succeed, and could just end up costing millions and milliosn of dollars we don't have to spend anyways sad

tptmanno1
Good Idea in general
But for Bush, BAD IDEA,
anyway, this is gonna fall through, Its just pre-election hype.
But If you think about it the economy is in soo much danger and the domestic problems are just too great to go around diverting money to NASA and such.
But I do think that this could potentially be a good thing, If it were timed right. Maybe after the election and we have a new pres. *crosses fingers* and the economy rebounds. Then yes, It would be a good thing. Also with a flourishing space program we would not be warring with anyone, we would be too focused on Mars.
Bad idea now;Good idea later.

Baylin
Its an excellent idea! I can think of loads of people that we should send to Mars in a rocket... evil face

kalantiaw
we f@#$ up earth so bad that we have to move to another planet and destroy it... if the natural resources of earth is depleted, then by all means, go ahaed... but would you really survive in a desert planet, not island, PLANET... plus, do you eally want to live where everythign is f@#$% red..?

i agree there are ways to suvive, but i don't wanna go thru all that hassle... if we have the technology to make mars livable, why not use it on earth first...

overpopulation..? just tell the poor and ugly people to stop reproducing and get a job... or a mirror...

Fire
It might have been a good idea but certainly not at this moment in time. I might be off just a bit but the USA is having one of their largest deficits (sp) in years. And then Bush starts planning for manned missions to Mars and the Moon. Maybe he should start getting his country back on track before he starts waisting billions of dollars on any kind of space mission.
(he only does it to get ppl to vote on him anywayz)

yerssot
rediculous, it's to get votes back to his camp
spending a lot of money that (oh surprise surprise) his succeeders need to pay!

if you just want to waste vaste amounts of money instead of spending it in a good way (as suggested above: helping out the problems in the world) he could have well burned the money roll eyes (sarcastic)

Corlindel
Is there oil in Mart?

Leave the martinas alone. They are happier than us...Even martian "amibas" are happier than eatrh amibas. stick out tongue

ash007
well i was thinking the same thing thre must be something on Mars which the goverment wants, and i think it is oil.

Friend44
thumb up Thanks - I was gonna start a thread on this -

I was thinking about the Martians - if the Americans find oil there - there's gonna be some Martian butt-kicking - George will say that they have saucers of mass destruction...

The Omega
There is NO oil on Mars.
Goodness. The oil deposits we find today were formed over millions of years. Fossil fuels consist mainly of dead plants -- coal from trees -- and natural gas and oil from algae, a kind of water plant.

There may be - or have been - microbes on Mars, but not plants and algae - hence no oil.

Friend44
...but seriously...

Yeah we did **** up the planet but it's "normal". By definition we must **** up things to live. We need to convert what we have into the type of energy WE need. The other choice is to cease to exist. I know that some will say that the world would be better without us, but like I said, we either use what we have or we die.
I think that the exploration of space (Mars) is great but as some of you have pointed out, we should explore our own world first. I agree but only to a certain degree. Leaders in the third world have been know to "scrap" loads of foods that arrived in order to keep control on their weak population. If you put aside space till there's no more hunger and wars, we'll never leave more than 10 feet in the air...
Eventually we will need (as a race) to be able to "sail" aways as our ancestors did 100s of years ago. If america, canada, ect... hadn't been discovered (conquered) think of all the things that wouldn't have been discoverd... There are wonders out there that we cannot even fathom. One that comes to mind immediatly - imagine if earth was destroyed by meteors? Mankind might be able to go on with a settlement on Mars or on the Moon. They might even come to our rescue. But aside of sci-fi, the soil on other worlds could eventually be harnassed and actually be a solutions to third world's hunger...

mechmoggy
Has anyone seen Total Recall?

There's water in them thar red hills. yes

Gundark
Total Recall was great - I loved those johnnie cabs...hehe.

I think Mars would be a great place to dump all of Earth's trash and nuclear waste.

mechmoggy
And bring back some of that cheese.

No, thats the moon isn't it?

Gundark
Yes, thats the moon, dear.....

Missed breakfast this morning ?

mechmoggy
I'm dieting, cus we go away in about 5 weeks.

Gundark
Me too. I've been 'slim-fasting'. 2 shakes a day....bleh.

mechmoggy
Eueeegh. sick

We've been eating steamed fish and veg this week, and we've started back to the gym again this week. I'm aching all over. sad

Gundark
The gym is in the basement, so at least I don't have to drive there.

mechmoggy
I tend to follow the fat people round the gym, to make myself look better.

Gundark
I've heard that. That you should hang out with people who are bigger than you, to make yourself look smaller.

Thats all fine until somebody steps on you.

mechmoggy
laughing out loud

You dieting for any reason Gun?

Gundark
Holiday excess.

mechmoggy
Me too, I put on 7 pounds! eek!

Gundark
Get Mrs. Mech to chase ya around the house a bit...that'll burn some calories...

mechmoggy
Naked? big grin

Corlindel
So...

George Bush Admnistration advisers told him that was a good idea for his re-election to restart the space program with a trip to Mars.

Does Little George knows where is Mars???
Does he think Mars is a chocolate?
Will be the Mars reconstruction done by his "friendly" enterprises?

:P

Friend44
Why Don't they send him to Mars? Maybe Saddam hid his weapons there...

cermiestar
well after watching red planet last nite, definitely a bad idea stick out tongue

Corlindel

rusky
how can u be sure there's no base on the moon ?

Friend44
"how can u be sure there's no base on the moon ?"

Because he just checked in the phone book. You think he's dumb or somethin'?

BingaBonga
No. Or it least not yet. Maybe when we get more information, and are more secure about our knowledge of it... I don't think that we should risk men's lives yet, not until it's more safe.

KidRock
its our human nature...explore and learn about new things new planets. good idea or bad idea its going to end up happening and who knows what will happen lol. Im hoping we find aliens

KidRock
oops sorry! embarrasment

Corlindel
Smart guy smile stick out tongue

rusky
No really.... we all take this for granted but think about it, no one has been there ever since the US 'claims' to have landed there.
Doesn't that sound a bit strange ? Why the sudden lack of interest ?
After all, the moon is VERY close to earth, and it could be a much more well suited space for a base than Earth's orbit (the International space station), since it would have all the same qualities and more.
It could very well be used as a launch pad for ships travelling farther out, like towards mars.
There IS another explanation (the first one beeing there allready is a base there), but that would make me sound like some X-File freak wink

Fire
Travelling to the moon takes 3 weeks, travelling to the international space station takes 3 days (I think) that is a lot of difference, when something goes wrong and all. I think a lunar base would be come costly, prolly even more than the space station

rusky
Perhaps, but it would definitley be easier to build a base on the moon, rather than assembling everything in space, add to this that you could even end up assembling stuff on the moon, and it starts to look more like a factory in space, something that the space station really can't do.

h0ck3yh0rr0r
Humans on Mars? Well i voted no. Cuz i dont we should enhance technology anymore. The more we upgrade technology the more lazy we become and unhealthy. And going to Mars will just mean either we find life (which i doubt it) or just waste lot of money and find nothing.

but on one of the moons on saturn scientists found water. Water=Life.

The Omega
There's water on Mars, too. (shrugs)
Odyssey found traces of it from orbit last summer (or 2002).

Water in itself doesn't necessarily mean there is life. You need a descent temperature, too. What makes Europa (a moon of Jupiter) interesting is that it may harbour hydrothermic vents.

Anyways: I'm ALL for a manned mission to Mars. Even if it WAS announced on the same day as the first Enron convictions fell... smile

New technologies are cool. If it wasn't for the Apollo Space Program computer development would be 10 years behind!

Trinity_Matrix
And what is wrong with being an X-Files freak?

The new technologies that will be developed because of sending people to Mars would be good, but I'm still undecided about whether or not we should send people to Mars.

The Omega
Rusky> You DO sound like a conspiracy theorist. Any proof there already is a base on the Moon? wink

Trinity_Matrix> What makes you think it's a good idea? And what makes you think it's a bad idea?

SK88728
I think this is a 100% good idea, it's going to happen no matter what. and if WE (america) dont do it, China or Russia ir Japan will... not that thats a bad thing, but why break the tridition? laughing out loud and this will only help us learn more, help us maybe prevent sicknesses and distruction, and teach us more about traveling even deeper in space, maybe even find planets that we can one day in the far far far future live.

Trinity_Matrix
Omega -- I actually said in my first post in here why I thought it could be good and why it could be bad. I think it could be good because of all the new technology that will be created. I think it could be bad because for one thing, it'll cost a LOT, and because we've already messed up this planet, and once we're able to go to others, what'll stop humans from messing up those other planets? BUT -- I'm not saying that this will happen, just that it COULD happen.

Lord Soth
How will going to Mars help us that way? blink

h0ck3yh0rr0r
ummm where did u hear that from?

SK88728
well, we dont knwo that. but we will check the samples we have taken fromt he planet and find out if there WAS at one time

Lord Soth
There is indeed water on Mars. It has two polar ice caps, much like the North and South Poles n Earth. So it implies that Mars was once fertile and could sustain life. Or, it implies that it is possible fror life to exist, even if there isn't any at present.

rusky
Nothing really.. big grin... the other one was, ofc, there is an alien base there, that has been there for, like the last 30 years (at least). The US found it when(if) they first went there, and that's why they didn't go again.

Any proof there isn't ? stick out tongue

The Omega
Rusky> Well, the burden of proof lies on the one making a postive assertion (such as "There is a base on the Moon."wink

You cannot prove a "negative" or the non-existence of a thing.

So... wink
Proof!

rusky
Ok, sure... I'll dig into it... in the meantime ponder this :
- No ONE has paid anymore attention to the moon ever since the US landed on it.
- There haven't even been unmanned missions to the moon.
-And ofc, a base could very well exist on the moon without anyone knowing.. that doesn't need an explanation does it ? I'm sure u're all very well aquainted to the 'cover-up' abilities of gouvernments world-wide.

AliasNeo15
God, we could use that 800 Billion Dollars to balance the FU**IN budget.

Fire
the more you want to build there, the more you have to send up there

Fire
as I said before: going to Mars: sounds good
going to Mars at this point in time: A WASTE OF MONEY URGENTLY NEEDED ELSEWHERE

rusky
true...

venomfan
pfffft c'mon now we all know saturn is the place to be.

rusky
laughing out loud

Corlindel
Leave Mars oil to Martians !!! stick out tongue

rusky
laughing out loud

Lord Soth
Sure if being sucked into a crushing atmosphere is your idea of a good time stick out tongue

MovieKiller
Mmmm... interesting.

Linkalicious
IMO, great idea....and it's okay to waste the government's money because that's what they are their for. Someone's gotta fund the expeditions so why not the richest economy in the world? Besides i want my kids or grandkids to see that sucker in real life....maybe even walk on it.

Trinity_Matrix
Don't think I could put it better.

Corlindel

Hey!
While we are posting, Portugal landed his first ship in Pluto.
Its cold there big grin

ragesRemorse
Ok seriously. Does any one truly believe George bush's statement about man going to mars by 2020? I mean Really. He gave a time span within two decades. That shows right there he does not know a damn thing about what he is talking about. He just made the statement for face. Now back in the 60's we had a president who was very much involved in the space program, and was interested in exploration of space. He set a presidant. JFK said "ok well in 1969 America will be on the moon" and it happend. Jfk Had his shit down when giving the speach. He new the possibilities. He new what was needed for this to happen, and he even knew the terminology. When bush gave his press conference he was going in circles, not having a damn idea what he was spewing out of his mouth. Bush gave a date Far away, He gave one date then gave another. This does not show confidence. Now i like bush. He is like the retarded puppy from a litter. However. He showed no intrest in his statement. No enthusiasm, and most importantly NO knowledge. So will man make it to mar's? yeah, but because of Bush's statement or influence? NO

The Omega

Corlindel
Bah!!! I am sure Lunar Base Alpha still is on the moon travelling somewhere in space. And the true moon was replaced by some kind of post it. Go Maya, Go Alan, Go eagles!!!

(My lunch had somekind of druggs in it for sure)

Serious. I don't believe there is any base on the moon. However, if we believe there is alien life, their technology shall be to much advanced than our and we should not watch anithing they dont want us to see.

Gundark
I used to watch that show all the time....

*puts bag over head*

The Omega
Corlindel> Oh, THAT base... well... That's something ENTIRELY different yes

Seriously, though: While there's no intelligt life on Mars (and no oil!), doens't mean there isn't somewhere else in the Universe. We just haven't found each other yet. And any one who claims ET's are already here and hiding and doing X-fily stuff needs to answer me this:
WHY?
smile

Go Mars!
