Anyway quite alot of English accents pronounce it boot instead of bout...

Exactly English people know best (some of them anyways ) and since Canada is tied to England we know better

I thought aboot was french at first.

Its like anything else that is taken from another culture, it evolves and changes according to the needs at the time.

Canadians probably ran out of foot wear sometime and just adapted their bouts into boots... .... ... or... may...be not....

I've got enough clothes that I can be scruffy or smart at pretty much any given time and thats good enough for me
