It's interesting to look at the 1978 version of the Lord of the Rings now that the movie has been redone by New Line Cinemas...It's almost laughable-

These are Nazguls!?!? Noooo wayyyyyy.......

Why does Gollum look like a frog?
Ushgarak's note on the animated versions
Treebeard did look bad.
But there is a SERIOUS mix-up here. Those shots of the Nazgul and Eagles are NOT from Bakshi's animated version, which was very dark and nasty and the Nazguls looked fantastic. Bakshi's version only got to the end of Helms' Deep, remember. There was no Denethor and Palantir and so on.
And that is NOT Gollum. The link given by Kitoky above shows the actual Gollum pics. You have mixed up shots from a DIFFERENT production.
I am a big fan of the animated version and I would ask for accuracy in criticism of it. It was a very well made production and like I say, the Nazguls were far scarier than the ones in the film.
PJ also liked the animated version very much and several scenes in the first two films are taken directly from it.
Iirima

Those are hilarious! My dad liked 1978 version, I haven't seen it...I want to! Interesting how ppl interpret how things are and look...
shadowy_blue
And oh Kit, do you have any pic of the Balrog with the butterfly wings?

It's laughable indeed. I'm most thankful of the version PJ made that we are enjoying right now.

orlandoOYEA
It is i wonder if you can rent it at a movie store? I really would like to take a look at it
Kitoky
You can buy it at a store like Walmart...don't know if it's worth it-
*looks at Gollum again* Definate Frog
orlandoOYEA
indeed, it would be fun to watch that and than watch the pj one. make pj's look even better
Iirima
He's a frog! The precious! *ribbit*
shadowy_blue
Look at these...good thing the Eagles looks like.....yeah...Eagles...you're lucky Discos.

Iirima
Me too!
Edit: AAAH! Balroog with butterfly wings! Viking Boromir! Elrond??! OMG! This is just...too weird. Must see 1978 versions NOW! (almost put 1798...hehe...I'm a bit dyslexic...)
shadowy_blue
The only good thing is that we have Glorfindel...Kit, you're lucky too.
Then again, this could be Legolas.
Kitoky
That's not Glorfindel, that's Legolas, that can't be Glorfindel unless they made Glorfindel and Legolas twins.
orlandoOYEA
Elrond Gangsta *snickers*
shadowy_blue
bwahahahaha!!!! Boromir of Gondor!?! Dude, he's carrying a horn, not wearing a horn!!
Kitoky
Posted those already shadowy - don't steal me pics

manny321
its a good thing they made the new ones yikes!!!
Kitoky
Omg that treebeard looks like a tanned carrot...
Iirima
AAH! Treebeard is a giant, tanned carrot with leaves on his head...AAH!
Ushgarak
Treebeard did look bad.
But there is a SERIOUS mix-up here. Those shots of the Nazgul and Eagles are NOT from Bakshi's animated version, which was very dark and nasty and the Nazguls looked fantastic. Bakshi's version only got to the end of Helms' Deep, remember. There was no Denethor and Palantir and so on.

Kitoky
Oh I'm not critisizing it Ush, I was just showing others how the animated version looked in 1978, it made quite an impression with The Hobbit and LotR and RotK, I must say.
So the frog thing isn't gollum? Then what is supposed to be?
Ushgarak
It's not FROM the 1978 version, that is why it is not Gollum. You have mixed things up. Any picture you take from after Helm's Deep is not from that version.
Did you not notice that the shots you were taking from had blatant changes in the way people looked? Whoever did that ROTK animated version, it had NOTHING to do with the famed animated LOTR film.
Kitoky
Oh I see...thanks for clearing that Ush
hrh_jennifer
I liked all of the animated versions for different reasons, the black riders in Bakshi's version were extremely scar, and still are! Whereas the animated return of the king is hilarious, if I remember correctly, Legolas and Gimli aren't even in it! The Gollum that you see on the pictures, from the animated Return of the King is really funny, especially the way he runs, and seems to have a vaguely Yorkshire accent, which somehow makes him more sinister?! The fact that there is a song every five seconds is also unbelievably funny, I know there are lots of songs in the book, but it is different in the animated version, I think you'd have to watch it to get what I mean properly though. Sam is also extremely dramatic in the non-Bakshi version.
Ushgarak
Also, why are people saying Boromir looks like a Viking- which he does NOT- and not the Riders of Rohan from PJ's film... who DO?
People need to learn some sense before they mock.
Kitoky

Sorry?
Ushgarak
It's ok, just inaccurate mocking gets to me.
I am glad Jennifer agrees about the scary Black Riders- they really were very good.
Chelesian
Wow. Im new here but thats hilarios

Kitoky
Welcome Welcome Chelesian

Iirima
Yeah, hi! Hi!

Discos
lol oh god, its in HMV still and the hobbits actually look like children, merely 5 years old I would say.
WindDancer
It comes down to the perception Bakshi's had of the LOTR when he made the cartoon movie. I still prefer the animated version of The Hobbit by Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass (sp?) is more like for the kiddies, but great to watch as an Adult.
Arwene
i found some pics of the cartoon version of lotr.....
Discos
spooky, there was a thread kicking about on the cartoon and the movie
Discos - theres some kick-ass eagles on it
Arwene
oh i did look but nothing came up.....sorry if i started another dead thread...hides from mods
Discos
lol no one really bothers about it,
Discos - except Kit

Iirima
Kit will die if he sees another pointless thread, or at least he will become

Discos
yep,
best go hiding just now
Iirima
Let's all hide! *hides in inconspicuous dugout*
sumunabeech
The Hobbit and Return of the King were done by the same people. Rankin and Bass.
The picture of Gollum is how he looked in The Hobbit and RotK.
Ush is right about many scenes coming straight from the animated version.
-Bilbo's speech and giving up the ring.
-The entire Prancing Pony incident
-The Nazgul drowning at Rivendell
These are just a few. Watch the movie and I'm sure you will see quite a few also.
Discos
lol Gollum just looks so "f*c*ed" up (pardon my french)
a frog!
Arwene
hey im sorry i did look and really hard..i have dug a huge hole and im gonna hide in it
Discos
na Kit won't do much,
Discos - incase she does I am going to squeel and tell her where you guys are at

sumunabeech
http://www.lotruk.com/imagelibrary/images/bakshi/lotr-3-0418-gollum-2.jpg
How is this?
Iirima
SHE? Are you talking about Kit?
Discos
ah sorry my mistake, I used to think "kit" was a female when I first came on and it has stuck ever since
Discos - It was his damn avator lol
Iirima
I thought he was a girl at first, cuz I knew a girl that we called "Kit" and my sister has a doll named Kit. *sigh* I was hopeless, now I can't ever imagine calling him a girl!
What was his avatar? *curious*
Discos
it was from a manga programme/movie of a girl
Discos - come to think of it it could have well bloody of been a guy *sigh, hates mangas*
Iirima
Mangas are...um...IN-teresting...

Discos
sorry dudes but I find them really boring, very unrealistic (i know thats the basis of them) and simply stupid
Discos - being serious for once

Discos
also lets not start with the Kits a dude/dudette thing again, I swear that went on for a while
Corlindel
Hey!!!!
I saw it when I was eight...It's true..I went with my mom

and I remember perfectly Helms Deep battle and and the ringwraths.
p
Memories

Kitoky
*grumbles* unfortunately...
Well then. Arwene, you took the pics from the link I gave in my thread I made about the Animation version and took pictures from the New Line film, and made another pointless thread. Please. DON'T.
Oh and nice new sig Discos

muse5
Boromir is such a viking in that movie, i laughed through the whole movie, it was so trippy, definetly a 70's movie, Peter Jackson called the animated treebeard a carrot with a nose, i can totally see it
sauron
hem hem mr kit.....this was my thread
thief dirty rotten thief it was ours he stole it from us!!!

Kitoky
Uh..
Sorry?

sauron
you will be

Kitoky
I thought you were my buddy sauron?

sauron
indeed i am
otherwise i would not have been so upset whaen i had to say goodbye for what i thought was the last time
he made me cry you know people!
Kitoky

Yes, I did...
sauron
its nothing to be proud of,,,,this eye rains acid you know, lost half my orcs and melted ringwraits number 8s cloak, spent all afternoon looking for him!
damn invisible wraiths!
Kitoky
We still love them don't we everyone?
*expects a 'Yes, Ms. Hanagan' kind of reply*
sauron
i hate the wraiths when im sleeping, and i get woken up by a "REEEEEEEE" and then they use my eye as a flaming hoop !!!!!
muse5
i'm confused... oh well... my precious
Kitoky
lol, me and sauron likes to rant...
ATM4eternity
Are there any pics from return of the king like the battle of pelennor fields cause id like to see how they did that
Kitoky
you could go to the link that I gave on the second page and it should be easy to see.
muse5
all good, not as confused anymore, the pelennor fields...it looked like a world war 2 news reel, 'and the battle rages on', god that movie was so cracked it was funny,
frodo's hair? again i'm going to go with the fact that it is a movie made in the 70's
Hania
The characters all look -haha- "strange". But I like Legolas, he's pretty in both movies :P
muse5
Legolas isn't as bad as the rest of them... boromir-his vikingness. lolol, aragorn looked like a native american
Kitoky
Legolas always has to be pretty and prissy - stupid elves...
Exa
Its laughable indeed...
But, strange, I remember the Nazgul a little different than on the first pic - some of the horses had horn lol... but I cant remember wings, though the Nazgul can beam themselves wherever they want it seems.
The most horrible one is the poor Balrog

Ushgarak
Please read the thread through. That Nazgul pic, and the Gollum pic, were posted in error and were not from that animated version in which the Nazguls were much better.
glaurung
Only slightly better, being merely hooded figures with red eyes.
Major problems wit the Nazgul included:
1) The absolutely hilarious hobbling around all curled up .
2) The inability to control a horse (on the way to the Ford).
3) The tendency to pretend to be the four horsemen of the apocalypes in a ridiculously overwrought sky
4) The tendency to just stop instead of actually chasing anyone
Major Problems with Saruman:
WELL is iit Saruman or Aruman? Make up your damn minds!
Major Problems with Sam:
He's a deformed moron
Major Problems with Gollum:
In a truly shocking performance he sounds more like Ron Moody's Fagin than a suitable Gollum, one half expects him to launch into a rendition of...
Ohh you've got to pick a pocket or two boys,
you've got a pick a pocket or two...
my precious
Major Problems with the Balrog
1) Its only slightly taller than gandalf
2) Its clearly a rotoscope of a man wearing a fake lions head, butterfly wings and moon boots
3) It flies like the sh*tty reptile birds in At the Earth's Core
4) its just AWFUL
Other problems:
Aragorn appears to have become a native american (but with John Hurts voice)
Boromir looks frankly ridiculous
Treebeard is a disaster
hmm am i running out of space
sauron
actually thats how big a balrog should be
they were actually of basic human form, but slightly larger
Kitoky
Movie Balrog still rocked.
Discos
yep it sure did, I like how it spread its wings up and held its fists in, just like it wanted to say "arrrggghhh"
Discos - just like Eagos
Kitoky
Well I liked how PJ did the first movie with the Balrog because at some shots of the Balrog it didn't have wings and at some shots, it did. so fans could continue to debate on if the Balrog had wings or not, but since in TT we finally see that the Balrog have stupid wings that long debate was finished.

Exa
Not really
they can change their size - appear bigger when they surround themselves with shadows

But I think in the book the Balrog was twice as tall as Gandalf
Their size (and number) is changed a lot in Tolkien's works, first there were hundreds of Balrogs only a little taller than men, in the end seven Balrogs, but far more mighty.
About the wings thing... I dont think they were supposed to have real wings, I loved how that looked in FoTR (as Kit said

) with the shadows that somehow looked like wings, somehow didnt. Great.
In "Morgoths Ring" Tolkien writes about Balrogs:
"Swiftly they arose, and they passed with winged speed over Hithlum, and they came to Lammoth as a tempest of fire...",
but Tolkien often uses the term "wing" for speed - like in the Lay of Amroth and Nimrodel.
Ushgarak
Well, I think you are entirely wrong about the Nazguls- I rate them superior to the move ones.
big gay kirk
Time to stick my neck out... I preferred the Ralph Bakshi Cartoon to the new movie... it took fewer liberties with the book, and the Nazgul were far better. FOTR was the best of the movies, but I fell asleep in ROTK... and i first read LOTR when I was 8. I've read it every year since, and the Peter jackson version was just too Hollywood for me.
eleveninches
I saw this version on TV a few years ago,
It so totally SUCKS ASS.
It is soooooooooo gay
Kitoky
eleveninches, watch your language here and don't bash the Bashki version so much.

This 1978 classic is a superb masterpiece of animation.

Copy this URL into your adress field to sign a petition for Warner Home Video to release this excellent classic in a Special Edition DVD. It certainly deserves it.
Maikahyandowen
can't say I liked it much. especially not Sam
DanielLB
Haha, i found it very enjoyable, but like you said, Sam seemed.......well.........not like Sam. To 'clingy' on Frodo! And his voice got annoying.
Love Gollum though!
RogerRamjet
too bad Bakshi had no 300 milion Bucks to do his movie, as Peter Jackson did, eh?

Maikahyandowen
yep!
those ringwraiths were pretty bad too
DanielLB
meh, it was good for the time i suppose
Maikahyandowen
what about the Balrog. that was pathetic
DanielLB
well ok...it was pretty bad! but come on! it was good to get the point across!
Maikahyandowen
bah. the bad animation was too distracting for that
DanielLB
The thing i hated were the Orcs where they would change from animation to people like coloured in black with red eyes!
Maikahyandowen
yeah, that was really weird. they did that with the riders of Rohan too

Yeah, I'm not that big on Rankin/Bass, either. Bakshi's film was cool, though.
