do you guyz consider plastic surgeons as physicians?

can u guyz help me out with some questoins. like i said before im thinkin about going in the medicine field but i dont know what path i want to pick. there are soo many fields in medicine. from cardiology to oncology to pathology to gynecology(lol). any ways to help me out? and how long do you think it would take to become a phsycian of any kind?

Baylin
Plastic surgeons physicians? Depends how the ply their trade! If they use their skills to help badly disfigured people then yes if they use them to make lots of money by making woman in funny lookin mannequins then no.

I dont know about the States here in the UK it takes about 6 years to qualify as a doctor and then you can specialise in the field of your choice.

HockeyHorror
6 years AFTER college/university to become doctor?

Baylin
Yup, its hell but well paid when you've done!

(Oh and don't forget sweet, innocent, impressionable student nurses they're always a bonus....)

HockeyHorror
thats true^

hmmm but i still dont know what path in medicine...surgery..gp..etc etc

Linkalicious
i think it's like 6-8 years here in the states...

HockeyHorror
6-8 years AFTER college/university or are you counting college/university in the 6-8 years?

SuperSayinGoku
6-8 years in U.S.A depend on how you serve for the years if you serve good youll need to serve 6 years bad - 8 years.

HockeyHorror
what do you mean how you serve? quality? or how fast u finish?

ash007
lol i guess you have thought hard about this.

My girlfriend in a Med student she is in her final year of med school which is a 4 year course she then will have to choose a specialized area in medicine which can take a further 2 years.

She is choosing Pediatrics i guess she loves kids smile

HockeyHorror
ok what about just a regular General Physcian. how long would that take?

Darth Revan
Still takes a good bit of time, or so I'm told erm

The human body is a complex thing

Furthermore, regular ol' physicians don't get paid a whole lot, if money is important to you. If money is really an issue to you, be a surgeon, you greedy bastard. Though I must warn you, my uncle is a surgeon (uh... what's it called... the thing where they fix people's arteries and veins and such up so they don't have heart attacks), and he's literally almost never home. Works something like six to nine, almost every day.

HockeyHorror
no i dont care much about money. cuz im in a Health Career Focus Program at school and i just want to continue in the field.

beaujay1
wheather you agree or not that plastic surgeons are "helpful" doctors, they are physicians. They have to go through medical school and residency just like all of the the other doctors.they have to know just as much as all of the doctors as well. now, wheather or not they are doing it to help the people with their appearences or just out for the money(well who isn't these days?) that is merely an opinion.

Darth Revan
Oh, well in that case, work in whichever field most appeals to you big grin

HockeyHorror
k smile

silver_tears
would this not take longer since you need to know more confused

HockeyHorror
hmmm i dont think so.

i know the longest that takes is INternal Physcian.

but i heard General Physican doesn't take to long. i just want to know more details.

Fire
ofc a plastic surgeon is a physicians
why wouldn't he be?

HockeyHorror
it was just a question since many people dont consider plastic surgeons as physcians.

Just never lose sight of the fact that a career in health should always be more about the career than about the health... just as medical insurance is more about the insurance than the medical... if you want to make a lot of money, be a doctor in the good ol' US of A... if you actually want to help people, don't attach yourself to any of the big hospitals or companies... you won't be rich, but at least you'll be able to look at yourself in the mirror...

There seems to be a distinction between "surgeons" and "physicians".

Surgery seems to be made out of Cardiothoracic, Vascular, General Surgery, Breast, Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedics and even Urologists.

Emergency Physician's seem to be in between.

What falls under the "Physicians" are Respiratory, Cardiologists, Haematologist, Oncologist, Renal, Rheumatologyist, Neurologists/Neurophysiologist etc.

There are two ways to get into Med as a Grad (3-4 yrs undergrad + 4 yrs Med) or Undergrad (6 yrs). This is then followed by Internship, Residency (RMO I, RMO II etc), Registrar(sorry, no idea about the proper hirachy names of each level).

The point is, even after you graduate you are still "studying". One of the things that you will have to keep in mind is that as a doctor (physician and surgeon esp in a hospital system) and because of the nature of medicine, you are always learning/studying. Also what people do not realise when they study medicine is that you will need to teach!! Prepare to teach and do alot of presenting be it to JMOs, RMOs, Med students until you get your official "consultancy" status big grin

And don't forget you have to sit a few exams before you get the "consultancy" status stick out tongue

And, I was talking to one of the Gastroenterologist once, he said that more and more physcians are doing what surgeons do ie Cardiologists do angiograms etc.

Anyway, good luck in your study of medicine. I do hope you are in it for the right reasons and not make the money your major reason.
