I think that I get so into the actors (these people make the movie for me most of the time) that I remember they are just actors. I don't think of Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger or Jim Siedow as Old Man Sawyer when I am watching a horror movie.
Zilverz
This is one of the reasons why people like noname actors in horror movies.
Cinemaddiction
Because they aren't scary anymore.
amlap
i would agree with ya cinemaddiction... infact the only horror movie to ever scare me was the childs play series... but that is due having a young tainted mind.
tabby999
you dont even see jasons face, but we still know whos behind it these days. who plays myers?
Drifter101
they're not scary, they're more funny now, for some reason, they way people die is amusing, there hasnt been a great horror flick in years
HockeyFace
I disagree. Good horror movies have come out. We just don't know about them because thye are usually very samll and/or independent [productions thta don't go to the big theatres.
samhain
I think that as you get older Horror movies cease to have the same effect on you, you still enjoy them but the scares are mostly gone. Most people around my age that I know would agree. Horror films work better on a younger mind.
dean7879
there is not much point in watchin a horror film if u aint gonna be scared by em...i think some people lie slightly when they say that no horror film scares them...its like me saying that no comedy film makes me laugh or no drama films make me sad..its impossible...i admit that some horror films of late fail to scary but u cant tell me when u first watched films like the exorxist and halloween, u werent scared or chilled a little..i recommend jap film uzumaki for ultimate scares...this film shit me up
Freddy_vs_Jason
Dean that is completely false, NO horror movies scare me anymore. But I guess thats because when I was a kid my relatives would get out a lot of horror movies that scared the heck out of me, I use to be a wuss, but now I've sought of grown into them. Freddy vs. Jason got me into horrors. It's not age that makes you afraid or not, it's your personality and what kinda of person you are. But I'm getting the remake of TCM on Wednesday so we'll see if it scares me or not. I loved being scared, fingers crossed!

methinkalexahot
They have changed in the geeky way ................ but I do want to see the ring it's old so it has to be scaryvampire
methinkalexahot
what movies are still scary any more ?2gunswhip
samhain
The last movie that scared me when I watched it was Ring. Not jumpy scary, but that creeping fear that you get when it goes too quiet in a horror movie. Alice, sweet Alice had a similar effect as well.
Drifter101
i think samhain is right the older u get the less scary they get if scary at all, for me they went to scary to humorous
MichaelMyerscoo
To me horror movies just make me laugh. It is funny cause you see people fall down when they get poked or some nonsense like that. The killings in movies are always funny. For instance: In Jason Goes to Hell, somewhere at the end this lady gets her jaw punched in. That was funny.
eggmayo
To me, horror movies are not scary as when i was about 7, i just got really scared by texas chainsaw, and then kept thinking.
wow. its a plastic videotape. noone with a chainsaws coming out of that.
Now, i cant undo that and the only thing that scares me is when someone jumps round corners or whatever.
Drifter101
the ring made me laugh, so i think the final conclusion is as u age the hold horror films once had fade away
Pirate_Girly
The reason i dont get scared by horror movies is because ive been watching them every since i was like 4 years old and i got used to them. Probably the first ever onces ive seen are Fire in the sky,Halloween and Childs Play and I just grew onto them.
slayer

TheFilmProphet
I agree.
A child is much more frightened by a horror film than an adult is if at all. I used to be very afraid of horror films as a child, but now they hardly have any affect on me at all.
DaneBramage
A great example is 28 days. For me, it wasn't the infected crazed pre-zombies that were the Horror element, it was the plan of the soldiers to re-propagate the species at all cost.

To answer the main question of this thread. I think it's maturity and exposure. I was going to Horror movies whilst in the womb. My family(dad, mom and myself) went to the Drive-In double horror feature EVERY Friday night until i was 17 years old. at the end it was just dad and myself. I saw 2000 Maniacs at the age of three, Night of the Living Dead the summer before I went into first grade. My first remembered erection was while watching Rosemary's Baby sitting in a lawn chair next to the car with my own speaker. They scared the shit out of me and I had bad dreams but I was always up the next Friday. My folks saved a shit load on baby sitters. Horror movies have always been a part of my life. My tastes are more sophisticated, but my love of horror remains. If it's sick and original dish it up. My fork's in my back pocket.
Wolfie
As a kid, horrors scared the crap out of me. And I didn't even see the scariest of them. My dad loved his horror movies and I would watch some with him, seeing that he would just laugh (the farmer in Motel Hell wielding a chainsaw with a pig head on his head). Plus, parents always tell you that movies aren't real. With that in mind, as I matured, I stopped being scared by them because I know they're just movies. Freddy isn't gonna kill me in my dreams. The Wolf Man isn't gonna jump through my window under a full moon. Now I laugh with my dad about the farmer.
As of today, only the original TCM and Hellraiser have been remotely scary to me. Imagine falling asleep to Hellraiser, and wake up the next morning to the DVD menu, Pinhead giving his speech "We'll tear your soul apart!" LOL!
TheFilmProphet
The only horror film that has ever actually scared me even a little as an adult is the Exorcist.
Napalm
Becuase I know there not real
tabby999
yeah, i was scared by the movies for a while, then i went "hang on, theres no leatherface around the corner, theres no jason in my closet, theres no vampire waiting to get me, dont be stupid man!" and now i dont care!
eggmayo
Im 14, and the only film that ever scared me was Texas Chainsaw, purely because it was disturbing.
Most mainstream horror films feature well known actor/actresses, so cant pull it off. Look at Scream... Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Drew Barrymore... everyone recognised at least one familiar face.
Another point is that you shouldnt really be scared by moving images on a TV set, unless your watching the news.
moviejunkie23
i think there are different elements to a movie to make it "scary"
i think reqium for a dream is far more scarier than any horror film if you just take into account the word scary. But i think horror movies can play on different types of "scary".
you have gross out
jump out of your seat
eerie
(i am sure you can add more)
these are examples of things that could be "scary"
gross out is when its trying to make your stomach churn. Like at the end of evil dead when those monsters are decomposing in front of ash's eyes. that would be a gross out.
jump out of your seat is when suddenly out of nowhere the monster attacks and the music makes you do a jump
eerie is when you have some kind of concept like when you fall asleep the boogeyman will come and you'll be helpless.
these are differnet ways to make a movie "scary"
there are some more recent films that take these ways to make a film "scary" and do quite well with them. I jumped a couple times in ring and the concept is pretty eerie. So what if it wasn't a blood bath? not everything has to be severed arms and all that. But there still is gross out elements in horror movies like for instance there are some pretty gory parts in 28 days later.
And yea of course as a kid you are going to be more scared by movies. My friend for instnace cried and cried when he saw star wars as a little kid because darth vader and had nightmares about him for weeks. But as an adult you watch it and you don't have to be scared by darth vader to find him a interesting character i think. Thats how i am with horror, it doesn't have to give me a intense feeling of fear or terror, as long as its interesting well written and well directed
tabby999
i think the "jump out of your seat" one is weak. its used to make up for genuine scares in most movies these days, its just an overglorified version of going "boo" at the audience.
Napalm
Or the movies "From justin to kelly"
tabby999
and hillary duff movies
moviejunkie23
at my local movie rental store they had a copy of big mommas house in the horror section. CLASSIC.
eggmayo
Or Bowling for Columbine, that genuinely scared me.
tabby999
or lindsay lohan movies...
prettyinpink23
They don't make 'em like they used to. The only horror movies i'm scared by are the 'Friday the 13th' series. The rest are funny. Chucky- he's so damn cute. Leprechaun- it's funny how he walks. Candyman- makes me want candy. Freedy- would be a good gardener. Mike Myers- white mask and kinky hair enough said. Leatherface- it looks like he made his face in the dark. Jason- now that is some creepy shit, that's why I hate hockey.
Mane
You...seriously think...that...Friday The 13th is scarier...than TCM??

tabby999
depends on the person...
T.M
they arn't scary its as easy as that most of the horror movies over the past few years have been serial killers which are all the same IMO. now zombie movies are comming back its alot better but still not scary.
