The One Himself
Phoenix asked me to post a link to Elvish Fonts: So there goes:

http://www.dafont.com/en/theme.php?cat=605

Have fun! smile

Exa
Great fonts there

(but aiya the first really correct elvish font is the one before the last on the third page, most of the rune fonts are also excellent)

The One Himself
If you mean the font used in the subscription on the ring, the link is:

http://www.dafont.com/dl.php?os=win&fichier=elvish_ring_nfi

nazgulinthedark
i have that font big grin

Bloom4ever
mad once again, worthless computer wont let me download it

Exa
Nope not that one
It looks nice but its yet only latin letters, changed to look like Tolkien-ones

The One Himself
O sorry, I mean "inscription on the ring" (where is my mind? roll eyes (sarcastic) ) but I thought that was the real one used in the movie...

Exa
It uses the same signs mostly but in a different way

And as its latinized you can easily read it without any idea of tengwar

The One Himself
Hummm ok..By the way I'm not a LOTR expert stick out tongue

pip-foot
wow! exa, i think you know everything..bout lotr anyways smile I wanna download em, but i gotta wait till i get home, cuz i am at teh library right now smile

Exa
The best Tengwar fonts there are
RS Moroma
Tengwar 3+4+5
Tengwar Cursive
Tengwar Gandalf (though the "L" is the wrong way round, but it looks cool)
Tengwar Noldor
Tengwar Quenya
and Tengwar Sindarin
(nearly all of them on the fourth page)
So these are the one that make correct "elvish" letters and you are able to write great stuff with them, but theyre quite difficult to use, at least most of them - only "Tengwar Gandalf", I think, is quite easy. And looks good.

Tirion Sarati is also great but no Tengwar elvish.

PippinTook
Ah, thanks Exa. big grin I'm gonna download those when I get home. I'm at my dad's house right now...

Very cool sig, Exa wink

aniron
wheres the lotr part and potc part, on ya kmc room?

The One Himself
is that directed to me?
confused embarrasment

Kaleanae
Thabk you for the Fonts!!

citadel
hey i know this sounds like a stupid question, but, how do you make the fonts usable in writing and stuff? i downloaded the ones i wanted and put them in a the 'my documents' folder, but now i dont know how to get them to the font folder. i tried pasting them there which didnt work. i also tried going to the 'fonts' folder in the control panel, but it wouldnt let me install them! idk if its just my computer or what, but if you have info on this tell me! btw, the fonts are awesome! eek!

The One Himself
Just unzip the archives and copy the *.ttf files to the fonts folder. The paths are

Win98 C: \windows\fonts

Windows 2000 and XP C: \winnt\fonts

in most of the cases. Or use the control panel. wink

shadowy_blue
Exa, I still didn't forget it up to now, but...is one of those fonts the Easterling or Haradrim runes? big grin

shadowy_blue
I don't want to be a complete pain in the "you know where" but I'm really ignorant about this. sad Could you please help me further? big grin

Where exactly is the fonts folder? What does it look like?

And what are the *.ttf files?

I'm so sorry, I'm just desperate. sad

Thanks! big grin

shadowy_blue
Ohh...nevermind. big grin I got it working. I figured it out..woo!! big grin Thanks anyway!! big grin

shadowy_blue
Sorry for the consecutive posts but I can't edit my post anymore.

Exa, what type of of font was used frequently in the writings in the movie? Other than the inscription thing? confused Coz they all pretty much look the same I can't distinguish. sad

Exa
No, I dont think so.
Tolkien, I think, didnt invent such a font, the letters that are used as a decoration of the Haradrim and Easterling armour seem to be a variation of the Elvish ones (some look similar, maybe thats coincidence), though I think nothing is known about how to use them.

They look the same, the difference is how they work.

The elvish writing isnt just a font like all the others in word because it works after a different system - there is no Tengwa letter for a, b, c and so on, and so there is also no font that could really work with that. You are right, the only font that looks similar to the one that was used for the Ring inscription is the strange one on the first page - but the big difference is how the letters are used. This font simply takes random "elvish" letters that somehow look like our normal ones - like, the "silme nunquerma" letter (used in elvish writing for the s- or ss-sound) looks like a capital E, so it's used as an E. Thats nice if you want to produce goodlooking and elegant texts, but not if you want to write the elvish way. For this, you need the other fonts that maybe look a little different (as they are not that thin and cursive as the one in the ring inscription), but you can (mostly only if you know how to write elvish in "reality"wink write correct elvish texts with them.

The only font that is in the middle between (and that I also found) is the one called "Tengwar-Gandalf". It looks elvish, it mostly uses the elvish letters, but in the way it would seem logical for us, so if you press the t-key you get an elvish t [the letter should look somehow like this: p ). It's not 100% correct elvish in the end, it's not possible to use all the extra signs, but at least you can get an easy transcription with the real elvish letters (by the way, the L in the font is the wrong way round stick out tongue looks good though), so - try this one smile

Fëanor
I downloaded this thing called the Tengwar Scribe, but I'm not happy with it...I always thought the vowels weren't always written out but rather used some form of dots and slashes like they do in Arabic.

Exa
Yes thats right - at least in the normal styles. There are socalled fullwriting-styles (like the Beleriand-one for Sindarin) that use - as the name says - full letters for vowels.

The Tengwarscribe-Font or the program?

Fëanor
It's a program...on one side you write normal then it translates it on the other pretty cool, but I would prefer it if it wrote in the normal style...

My name would probably look like this in english - Fnr

Exa
Its the one that translates to other latin letters, right? or does it directly translate to Tengwar?`

If to latin letters - which font do you use then?

It would be like F_nr big grin

Fëanor
Directly to tengwar...but it's inconsistent...theres tengwar cursive and tengwar elf(a)

Exa
Hmm where did you download it? Cant you chose which writing (I mean long vowels or tehtar ones) to use?

Fëanor
I have to look for it again...I didn't bookmark it...you can choose three types of fonts when you download it...which ones I don't know I'll look into it.

Exa
Aha
thx ... will also look for it I think I dont have it yet... strange that it doesnt transcribe the vowels as they should be will look that up

Fëanor
yeah, i think i may have not d/l it properly...i remember reading about transcribing the vowels in the correct form. if and when i find it i'll send you a note.

Exa
... is it from here
http://hem.passagen.se/mansb/at/tengscribe.htm
...?

Fëanor
again i must bow to you...yes, yes it is...as they say here

you da bomb g!

Exa
LOL big grin stick out tongue

Who says what where lol

Fëanor
oh...here in L.A. or most parts of America where slang is commonly used. it more or less means you are great!

Exa
big grin smile embarrasment

Another great font: YATT (Yet Another Tengwar Tool):
http://www.jadro.cz/tengwar/index.php

also loads of downloadable stuff
http://www.geocities.com/tengwar2001/

For Daniel Smiths fonts (best ever big grin )
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/4948/tengwar

also nice:
http://www.forodrim.org/daeron/md_teng_primers.html

PippinTook
laughing out loud Yeah, I live in the US too so I know what you're talking about haha. I hate that saying though....It makes no sense.....You are da bomb....It's like saying someone's gonna light themselves on fire and wait til they blow up...then blow up haha. It means, as you said, the same as you are great, but I still don't get it.....Then again, I don't keep up with the slang things everyone says....Like that "stank" thing...I dunno if you've heard of it before or not, but it's like when someone says someone's name, someone else says stank...Like stink, I guess (ex. Bob!!....Stank!)....I don't get that one either....Makes no sense what-so-ever. *sigh* What has this generation come to? haha. I wonder why everyone doesn't just say stuff that everyone can understand....Cause I don't understand any of the things they say...And I'm a teenager, so you would expect me to know what these things mean...Or what they're even saying haha.

Anyways, thanks for the fonts, everyone! I love them!!! big grin

Fëanor
Yeah I don't know why they say that...sound dumb if ya ask me...how about 'phat'...where did that come form?

Exa
Phat? heheee we also have that here...

Fëanor
you've got to be kidding...really. damn americans and their lousy way talking...

oh and helluu Exa... big grin

Exa
big grin

"phat" was in here about two years ago but that pretty stopped now...

And, yes, Aiya, Feanor smile

Phoenix
laughing out loud the first time someone used that on me, I thought they said I was looking "fat" and I didn't talk to them for a week! big grin

tlotr123
I LOVE LEGOLAS

Exa
Aha

How's that connected to the topic

mah
I downloaded different fonts a while ago, but never really got into learning how to write it. Too much hassle for a lazy guy like me.

Exa
big grin if you want a half-correct, easy font (very practical for like initials and stuff), try "Tengwar-Gandalf" - it's the only one I found that transcribes like a normal Word Font.

citadel
hey... i need some more font-installing help. i havent been using my computer lately so i havent tried to install stuff until now so, i tried to copy a font to the 'fonts' page on the control panel but it said the font was invalid. is there another way to do it? idk what else to do, lol. thanx for the help! thumb up

citadel
omg! i figured it out. sorry, ignore that last post. i so figured out how to install fonts! go me. i feel really stupid now. embarrasment

frodo_lover
Does someone have a good site were I can find the elvish language? Not just the signs... Thank you!

Exa
I dunno any where you find the whole language... but the best lotr language site ever is www.ardalambion.com

The One Himself
eek! There's a brazilian portuguese version!!!

Exa
There are versions in loads of languages as the contents of the site are great big grin

frodo_lover
Thank you! It's great! But I think I wont need the brazilian portuguese version big grin

Exa
stick out tongue if you're also looking for a course - try this site:
http://home.agh.edu.pl/~evermind/mathom/pedin_edhellen_en.zip

PippinTook
Yeah, I don't know where "phat" came from either....I know this is bringing up that topic again, but I haven't been on lately and I wanted to comment on that haha. I don't get any of those strange words...phat....dawg....stank...and whatever else these poor Americans come up with...roll eyes (sarcastic) I can't believe I'm one of them, either! haha. Well, not one of them as in one of the people who say those...things....but an American...you know....ah, forget it. Haha.

Thanks for those sites, Exa big grin (hehehe you da bomb g! stick out tongue don't ask me why I said that....God only knows what it means...hmm...I wonder if He knows, though haha)

Raventheonly
Any have the fonts of the Black Speech of Mordor? Or is it just similar to Elvish?

Exa
The style that is used for the ring inscription uses the same letters as all the elvish fonts on that site, but in a slightly different style (cursive - like italics). I dont think you can download that specific style on the dafont-site, il see if I find something.

You get one that looks nearly the same when you just use one of the fonts in italics

frodo_lover
Just wondering... Is it Quenya that is spoken in Lotr?

frodo_lover
I've looked at the font that "The One Himself" talked about...
But whichone is the elves in Loth using?
I'm thinking og doing a tatoo, and I relly want it to be right!

Iirima
Quenya and Sindarin, and other languages as well were spoken....as for the accuracy...Exa is our living computer...stick out tongue I would wait for her.

Exa
Lol big grin

bout the question - the language that was mainly used in the film is Sindarin, only few sentences in Quenya (I posted all of them in an other thread stick out tongue exaple would for instance be Saruman's spell awaking Caradhras - cuiva nwalca Carnirasse and so on - , one of Gandalfs sentences at the doors of Moria (ando eldarinwa, a lasta quettanya or something like that) or Frodo's sentence in the third movie - aiya earendil elenion ancalima). If you listen closely and compare them to the Sindarin ones (most of the other dialogues big grin ), you will maybe hear the difference... Sindarin is softer, more practical for speaking, while quenya is clear and like a ringing bell, the not-so-flowing speaking sometimes makes it sound a little like spoken latin.

Another often used language is Rohirric (the original rohirric language was replaced by old english), language of the Rohirrim - interesting for example Aragorns words to Brego the horse where he mixes both.

PippinTook
Ah, we love you so much, Exa big grin The all-knowing Nazgul-lover haha. stick out tongue

frodo_lover
Thank you sooo much Exa!!! I don't understand how you can know all this big grin

You're great!!!

Aldaron
You can also get fonts
Here.
Translation: You can also get fonts....

wink

Exa
big grin this was the Gandalf-Font I talked about on the page before stick out tongue

usually works quite nice, but has several errors or things that should be improved - like vowels at the end of words, the font doesnt add stems or something but only writes the lonely vowels... the L is the wrong way round stick out tongue ... nasals before corresponding consonants like nt are written as single letters, or s is always transcribed voiced.

masonicstory
Question for PippinTook:

What font did you use for the name "Billy Boyd" on your in message icon??? And where did you find it, or where could I find it??

Thanks

PippinTook
Use the link on the first page of this thread. The font's called Aelfa. It's the first font on the first page, ok? big grin
