Who here thinks that they will want to go see this movie, and see if it can live up to M. Night Shyamalan's other masterpieces?
Myth
I can't wait. Maybe the best movie of the summer. I'm hoping.
Stormy Day
I cant wait either.I dont know what makes M.Night so good but hes just awesome.
The sixth sense is probaly my favorite movie ever.
Myth
The Sixth Sense was my least favorit of M. Night's because of how slow and monotone it was. But it was also his most genious movie. So with that being my least favorite of his, that shows how great he really is.
scott hiwersh
I think it will be the best of the summer... I also think it will be his best film thus far. I have high hopes for the village, and I think my hopes are well based. The trailers look freaky, and I have faith in both M Night and the cast.
lil bitchiness
oh man, Ive just seen the trailer, i cant wait for it!!! This is gonna be great!
botankus
I think it's going to be pretty good. Movies like that come out like Tool CD's: They're good but it's so damn frustrating waiting for it to get released.
<<Solo>>
It actually looks pretty good, I didn't like Signs much but this looks pretty freaking awesome if it's done right.
Stormy Day
Yeah signs wasnt that good
Myth,The Sixth Sense was just awesome and brilliant
vagaryatwill
This is probably going to be one of the coolest this summer. Shyamalan's really got something with this one I think. It looks pretty spooky. I'm also interested to see the documentary that's coming out before the movie is released. Hopefull we'll see some cool footage from the Village.
scott hiwersh
I love the comparison... I swear July 30th will take 6 months to get here....
BingaBonga
I think that this looks like a great movie. So does anyone have any idea of what lurks in the forrest?
SlipknoT
The Village looks great, I cant wait. I love M. NIghts movies. Signs was my favorite
WindDancer
This is one movie I won't let go by. I'm going to go see the week that is released.

scott hiwersh
I am guessing it is some sort of wolf thing... those teeth that you can see in the trailer still make it seem that way at least.
ragesRemorse
i higly doubt that the creatures turning out to be wolf monsters is a little to predictable, whatever it is there will be a twist, as long as there not just other people i will be happy

Tells what is in the woods for sure
Or at least what Ive heard from various sources
You have been warned
Spoiler
spoiler
Ok whats in the woods is one of two things. Thee first one is most credible. 1. The creatures are modern man that have a construction
site in the woods( this explains the marks on the doors for demolishin.)
2. The creatures are some kind of aliens who abducted the villagers and set up a sort of zoo for them to be watched. This is what ive heard but only time will tell.
Shadow_King
those seems intresting ideas
Fan of LOTR
Ya but I think the first one is true though Since it describes what the marks on the doors mean.
greyboy
I'm pretty sure that neither of those are the actual case. I've read spoilers all over the place and while those two have been thrown around, they've more or less been dismissed...esp the construction crew one...cmon now.
WindDancer
I was looking back at his movies. Only one is predictable which is Signs. You knew from the start that it was going to involve aliens. This one I gotta feeling isn't so predictable. Whatever hides in the woods might be monster or some kinda of thing that will sure have some twist in the movie.
BingaBonga
I am defnately going to see this movie the day i comes out. It looks put together well. So the "creature" is attracted to red...
Kella
I am so looking forward to seeing this. The trailer scared the hell outta me. I had chills all over my body. I am so siked to see it!!!
Oh and in the preview you can see feet coming up behind Joaquin as he's walking through the woods in the yellow robe and it looks like the feet have red on them or what ever is walkig up is wearing a red robe.
I dunno...I love M. Night's movies. He has talent. I always get pleasantly surprised at the end. Wish i had that kind of writing talent.
greyboy
hmm...dont remember seeing the feet....i'll have to check the trailer again. that scifi thing is this weekend....that should be cool.
RaventheOnly
Its gonna be Great M.nights brother is a really good actor. He rocked in Gladiator
scott hiwersh
Those spoilers are not true, do not worry.
Kella
It's coming out in two weeks...right?
I can't wait...I can't wait!!!!

BingaBonga
June 30th

Waggy the Dog
...you can apparently see the monster here which is a shot taken from the trailer towards the end.
http://www.hometown.aol.com/manintheboxxiii/images/village.jpg
{got this off the IGN board}
it really doesn't look like a construction worker.
The Force
i can't wait to see this movie, my curiosity has gotten the best of me, and i can't help thinking what's lurking in the woods, whether it be monster or alien, M. Night Shamalan is a genious indeed

Kella
Okay...so I was right!!! YAY!!!! It does have feet and it was wearing a red robe!!!!! Whoo-hoo!

Kella
Okay...I found this pic...does this mean aliens??? Cuz...maybe it's just me, but I don't see these people knowing the benifits of electricity and hallagen lighting...???
Lady_Eowyn3
oh man i so wanna see this movie, but it really creeps meout b/c there's some woods behind my house, right behind the backyard fence, so whatver is in those woods, im gonna be so scared :'( I'm a scaredy cat, I was terrified in signs, I had to sleep with a nightlight b/c i kept seeing shapeshiftings, and after i saw the movie Them i think it was, it was kind of a stupid movie but i can't sleep w/ the closet door open, and it doesn't help that my house is haunted

oh man i'm a real loser
BingaBonga
I actually dreamed about it. I was on this scavenger hunt thing and all I remember was that my friends and I were on some playground at night, with tan cloaks on, the moon was full and bright, and we had to go through these woods to get to the finish. Then the wolves just started howling, and I started running into the woods, and then it turned into my kitchen and then out of the woods, it was really random. Later, I found out one of the wolves ate one of my friends.

That was one of the weirdest dreams I've had....
scott hiwersh
What is that light? I have never seen that one, where did you find it? This is going to be a long two weeks.
thundercat901
Those spoilers dont sound plausible after watching the trailer
youngn_123
Okay soo i dont know whats in the woods, but take in too consideration that when ever there is a trailer they always show something spooky from the movie, but when you actually see the movie, its something really freaky from that persons dream. i mean i could be wrong but but if that picture thing is right id be pretty upset that shyamalan has done something so obvious
BingaBonga
Well, now that it's almost the time that it comes out in theaters, the commercials for it are more vivid... plus, tomorrow on Live with Regis & Kelly, they're interviewing Sigourney Weaver from "The Village," so maybe she'll tell more about it.
Jeff-Man
i just had a thought.
*SPOILER* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
maybe the creatures r other humans that r just as afraid of the villagers as the villagers r of them. i dunno.
Anonymous102180
hi guys. i was searching around for info.
i - completely independant froma nything - came up with the idea of them living in modern day isolation..ever heard of the amish? lol, well imagine the amish except they teach their young ones about the "evil" outside the village, and thus they grow up to have an imaginative paranoia of it.
Anyywas, i cam eonline to see if others shared my hypothesis, and it's nice to see they do (though not on their own).
I can certainly see if this isn't the twist...could just be a teaser twist.
The phot posted earlier of the creature is interesting since it does clearly show a non-earthly creature, but could be a dream.
also the photo with the light reminds me of a construction site FLOOD LIGHT..which fits into this idea.
i guess we will have to wait, I doubr i will be seeing it before i can find a spoiler, because i dont go to th emovies often

Anonymous102180
what THE VILLAGE takes on the same attitude as THE OTHERS.
In otherwords, the village is not the village WE see, but "the village" refers to another just as isolated village outside, a truce of fear to isolate two isolated villages

FlappingMangera
I'm not gonna hazard any guesses as to what i think the village is all about cause i'd probably be way off. I can't wait to see this movie tomorrow night though
mikeysgothicgur
Sign's sucked, The Sixith Sense was alright, so I hope this movie turns out great! I can't wait to see it!
Waggy the Dog
The Village is, so far, not doing too well on Rotten Tomatoes, though it will definitley change in the next couple of hours. All of the reviews basically say it is scary, but not dramtically sound, and some say that the ending isn't as shocking as it should be.
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
yay it comes out tomorrow, im seeing it saturday.
This movie better be fricken scary! It doesnt look like its going to be,
JamalMagloire
My friend saw a preview earlier this week and said it was really good. I'm going to see it this weekend.
betrumka
Its not his best work. Wait for DVD rental.
Night is losing the battle for more creative plot twists. He hit a unique home run with 6th sense but its hard to do that again.
This is a lame attempt to meet that standard and it falls far short.
If you want to be scared watch the trailer and and surf The Village official website. They are much scarier than the movie, believe me!
forumcrew
it was not creative, it was not scary or spooky, it has some good laughs actually but thats it.. the trialer is far better then the POS the movie turned out to be
slinger
I loved it. Although there weren't many scary moments, there was something about it that I liked a lot. But the picture cruising around the internet with the boney(sp) face of the monster is fake/messed with. It's clear in the movie that that picture is fake.
forumcrew
its clear in the movie that EVERYTHING is fake
WindDancer
I'm undecided on this film. Not that the reviews have discourage me. But I'll go see it if I have nothing to do this weekend. I was really looking forward to it, but I better way for now.
Beyonder
Enjoyable but not what I expected. I wanted horror but didn't exactly get it. Night should have stuck to the story about a conflict btw monsters and the villagers instead of what this movie turned out to be. Good movie but hated that it wasn't the story they'd alluded me to with the trailers. Dissapointment.
Kella
well...I'm leaving to see it in less than an hour. I am keeping an open mind. I'm pretty easy going with movies.... I'll let you know what I thought of it.

RaventheOnly
It was good but i wish he would have stuck to what everyone had hoped

horror

Dark princess
I can't wait to see the village
Myth
The movie was really good. You just can't go to it expecting a horror movie, thats all.
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
The crappiness of this movie makes me want to cry.
Tired Hiker
Sounds like I'll wait for it to come out on DVD.

OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Well im not going to tell you not to see it, but for my own sake i had my doubts yesterday before i saw it because of the reviews i saw, and NOW i see why the village received them.
ragesRemorse
if you like to be tricked out of your money, then by all means go see this peice of sh*t sloppy movie. This movie had so many holes it makes shymalan look like an amateur when his other films made out tolook like a hitchcock. he is going to to continually go down hil from here on out, hese out of ideas, so he is gonna trick you to fill his pocket
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Thats great, i agree.
beaujay1
ok i saw it and it wasn't that bad......id never come up w/ something like that
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Only M. would come up with something like that lol, he's creative ...I admit..ONE thing good about this movie was that it had a bit of creativity to the plot...
ilvorlandobloom
i liked the movie.
botankus
....But you both like Orlando Bloom....I bet you both would have liked it if Orlando Bloom played Lucius Hunt instead of Joaquin Phoenix.
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
I wouldnt mind it, but then again seeing Lucius getting stabbed would kill me if it were Orli in that place!
Joaquin is an awesome, sexy man. He was cool.
Myth
If Orli was stabbed, I'd say screw the medicine.
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Shutup. lol. He thankfully wasnt, so lets leave that and get back to The Village discussion
Myth

ok
ilvorlandobloom
yeah, but i think Joaquin Phoenix did a really good job. i cant really see Orlando playing Lucius. newayz... i just thought it was a good movie
its not like i only like Orlando Bloom movies
spbswim
Was anyone totally dissapointed that the monsters weren't real?
If you want THE VILLAGE with real Monsters, I recommend reading this book:
Deep In The Darkness, by Michael Laimo.
This book has been flying off the shelves since the Village trailers started playing. This is the movie Shyamalan should have made.
Sandy
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
I wasnt but then again i was, seeing as it was the handicapped feller who dressed up as that mini godzille lookin thing..
Myth
Thats because his acting is 1 dimensional and his character is always the same, just in a different outfit.
ilvorlandobloom
okay... hey i didnt know it was based on a book! i'll have to read it

roundisfunny
If any movie features Orlando getting stabbed, I'll help fund it.
SnakeEyes
Sorry but Orlando Bloom is a pretty much talentless actor, that is popular because of teenage girls.
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Hello, put it in the Orlando Bloom thread. This is the for the discussion of 'The Village'
SnakeEyes
yeah well i am not the one who brought Orlando ******* up in the first place. So back to the topic!
Zerosparx
I heard the village was crappy. Which is dissappointing since I like most of Nights movies. Unbreakable was a bit on the dry side though.
YourNameHere123
any of you guys know where to get a picture of one of the outfits from the village that were 'the creatures' or any of the scene when adrien brody chases the howard girl through the woods?
roundisfunny
Sure thing; here ya go.

it just led me to a thread by Raz talking about how to host spoilers
roundisfunny
Hmm, that's strange. Try this one.
YourNameHere123
that was for clue big guy
ArrghPirateGirl
It hasn't come out here yet
scott hiwersh
I enjoyd it... I thought it was entertaining and I thought it raised important questions as to how we all live... There was more to it than a simple horror-type story, sometimes you have to look a little deeper.
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
M Night's never really made a movie that hasnt made you think a lot.
Mortanius
Just saw the movie and it turned out just like I predicted.
Mortanius
Did you finally get the hint? Duh! bash
Mortanius
Yeah I liked it and I hear that it's cool to watch the movie again knowing what the 'twist' is. I just think that the movie could have been darker and scarier. M. Night wanted it to be cute - I would have had people running out of the theater in horror!
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
It wasnt supposed to be scary in the first place....
Myth
No it wasn't. It was falsely advertised as scary (btw: M. Night doesn't set up the commercials).
Mortanius
On a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate it a 7. I don't know if it's from watching too many Twilight Zones or what, but I could see the twist coming from a mile away.
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Thank you myth

greyboy
I give it an 8/10, pretty easily. You have to be expecting a twist from Shyamalan though, cmon now. i thought the trailers were pretty cool too....sky capt looks like it def has potential, sure has the cast. national treasure will be a lot of fun, nic cage rules. and of course....batman begins...just cant wait for that.
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Jeez whats with all these good ratings?
natalya719
personally, i thought it was somewhat of a love story/thriller
natalya719
Oh yeah does anyone know what the M. in M. Night Shymalan stands for?? Just curious...
Mortanius
Marty. I could be wrong. Marty Night Shymalan.

OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Thats because it was a love story..and partially a thriller.
linwe_felagund

His first name is Manoj.... Not Marty
OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Oh now i remember

roundisfunny
This could have something to do with it.
Spitback
uhhhhhhhh no it sucked
OnLy_FoR_OrLi

yea

Into the Woods
'The Village' is less a horror film than a gothic romance with a twist
by Randy Shulman
Published on 08/05/2004
I don't mean to sound boastful, but I figured out The Village's big twist a few days before actually seeing the movie. While it was vindicating to see my theory play out on the screen, knowing the secret did not for a moment diminish my enjoyment of this stark, allegorical tale, or my admiration for M. Night Shyamalan, whose gifts as a filmmaker remain as considerable as ever.
Ever since The Sixth Sense, which remains the director's best work, Shyamalan has forged his career on simmering, atmospheric thrillers founded on a single crucial moment of revelatory surprise. The "Ah, ha!" in The Village is, admittedly, somewhat lame -- but not as lame as the one in Unbreakable or, even worse, the "Let's throw water on the aliens and see if they melt" scene in Signs.
What's remarkable about The Village, which is set in the 19th century, is how relevant it seems within the context of today's terrorist-stoked climate of fear. It speaks to our underlying human desire to shelter ourselves from the violence plaguing the world. Shyamalan isn't offering up anything new -- he's just adding his voice. Yet long after the movie's surprise ending has faded away, the film's mix of cautionary sobriety and passionate undertakings stick with you. It's a deep, involving story, filled with an abundance of subtext. And it is every bit as rich and unforgettable an experience as Sixth Sense.
The basic story involves a group of people who live an isolated existence in a Pennsylvania village framed by an imposing forest. In those woods dwell fearsome beasts with whom the village elders have forged "an uneasy truce." The villagers don't go into the woods. The creatures don't rampage through the village on a killing spree.
When the truce is breached by the curious but well-meaning Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix), the creatures return the favor with a series of visits that leave the villagers in a state of absolute and utter terror. A cataclysmic, unforeseen event involving the simple-minded but emotionally aware Noah (magnificently played by Adrien Brody) forces a resourceful blind girl, Ivy Walker (Bryce Dallas Howard), to venture bravely into the woods in an attempt to reach a distant town for medical aid.
It doesn't take an Einstein to figure out the movie's big twist. But there is plenty of satisfaction to be found in the small, significant details and elegant narrative nuances Shyamalan strews, like bread crumbs, along the path.
My guess is that most audiences will be disappointed by The Village. But that's because they've been sold a false bill of goods by the Touchstone Pictures marketing department, which is promoting The Village as an out-and-out horror film. While Shyamalan's film has horrific elements, it's a far cry from a hack 'n slash creature feature. If anything, it's a gothic romance along the order of Wuthering Heights, complete with desire, heartbreak, jealousy and revenge.
Shyamalan has a natural way with actors (I'm impressed by anyone who can get a halfway decent performance out of Joaquin Phoenix), and pays meticulous attention to the craft of screenwriting -- an art lost on many modern-day filmmakers. Period dialogue that could have easily come off as stilted and laughable instead rings magnificent with poetic resonance. And screen veterans like William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and Brendan Gleeson give the words sincere heft.
THE VILLAGE
Starring Joaquin Phoenix
Rated PG-13
120 Minutes
Area Showtimes
One has to feel a little sorry for Shyamalan, who, like the demon-enslaved villagers, seems expected to concoct tricky plot machinations that may not benefit the stories he chooses to tell. His twists have become foregone conclusions, and with The Village, he fails to put any real effort into the story mechanics. Instead, he focuses on the fundamentals of suspense-based filmmaking: dynamic, off-putting compositions, precise deployment of color, and dramatically heightened sound effects. All combine to create a potent, increasingly menacing atmosphere.
Still, we sit through The Village only partly engaged, as a good portion of our brainpower is given over to continuously looking for clues that will reveal the secret before its time. As a result, we never fully give ourselves over to the movie; we are never as immersed as we should or could be.
And that's a shame. It would be well worth Shyamalan's time to wrest himself free of this career-and-box-office imposed yoke and make a motion picture that dedicates itself to the art of suspense without adding the onus of a surprise ending. Then, and only then, will he become a true master of his chosen art.
JediHDM
I myself loved the Village. Even though i figured out the 'twist' early on, it was still an engaging and well-directed movie. The shyamalan experience is not just the twist and how it makes us feel, but the whole movie, how he uses lighting and sound to make us as confused as the characters.
Illyria
I watched it with my family and it was fine. I thought about the so called twist but I kept thinking that it couldn't be... 'cause in Shamylan's movies, there's always a definite paranormal presence. Anyways, I liked the movie and would recommend it to anyone who liked Sham's previous works and also goes to movies for their tones, sights-sounds, mainly cinematography. The atmosphere, scenery in that movie is beautiful.
Mr Parker
I havent seen it yet but I probably will this weekend.
vaya_the_elf
It did not give much information on it on the trailer .. so i have no clue on what i think about it yet
Loving_Daniel11
I didnt very much enjoy this movie in theater as me mum did. But Im gonna buy it anyway, it comes out on DVD next Tuesday. <January The 18th>
What about you?
Cinemaddiction
I'll probably end up renting it first.
cal31
I just saw a commercial for it and I can't believe they are still advertising it as a thriller. That was the number one reason this movie was such a big dissapointment, bad advertisement.
<<Solo>>
I still enjoyed it. Will be picking it up.
Mane
I have no clue why either...
shangheid
It was ok but I wont buy it
Cinemaddiction
I'm going to merge this with the current "Village" thread. Start up another one when the DVD drops, so we can talk turkey about the actual DVD.
BackFire
Why the hell would you buy a movie if you didn't like it?
I thought it was M. Night's worst movie thus far, very disapointing.
I just rented the DVD, however. I plan on giving it another chance tonight now that I know what to expect, no misleading commercials will get me this time.
forumcrew
i might have to do the same but the movie was so different then i expected i just thought it was horrible.. really it wasnt a bad movie just nto the type of movie i was going to see so i was disapointed in it.. i think if i saw this without knowing anything prior i would have enjoyed it a lot more
