I know im not the only one out there who enjoys the old days of punk and misses bands like the Sex Pistols and The Ramones! Here is a discussion thread for those out there who are punk and just don't give a damn.Personally,my favorite is the Sex Pistols, but feel free to debate. smokin' I'll just be here chillin and smokin the good shit while I crank "Anarchy in the U.K.".

Darth Revan
there's already a punk thread... called "punk is cool" I think

Daisy Duke
yeea

slasherpunk8604
My bad,I might just keep this open until it gets closed down anyway.Heh,kinda like fight the power I guess.

ElectricBugaloo
if this is your idea of fighting the power, you lead a sad, sad life

SeptemberRain
i agree that old punk is better than new punk; considering, the fact the new punk has become mainstream, cookie cutter bull shit. Some punk bands of the 90's that remained true to punk like The Refused, were amazing. Punk isnt just music, its a life style. No real punk band has ever gone platinum, no real punk band truely goes mainstream thats part of what punk is.

slasherpunk8604
I was just kidding about the fight the power thing. That would be really pathetic. If someone does fight the power, lets do it on a larger scale and do it right. That's right,i'm talking about killing Justin Timberlake.Everybody's thinking it,I just said it.Yeah,September Rain,I really miss the old punk. But,what can you do?

Korri
punk sucks

end of discussion smile

Darth Revan
no it doesn't suck no

punk rocks rock

slasherpunk8604
Korri,if you're just gonna hate on punk at least leave your address here so that we can kick your little ass.

Darth Revan
that's not nice no

Korri's cool... but she could have better taste in music

slasherpunk8604
...I play too much. It's alright. What do you listen to Korri?

Darth Revan
I think she has pretty good taste in music other than this not liking punk thing...

slasherpunk8604
It's a shame.I like alternative as well.I'm not completely one-dimensional when it comes to music.I just have a strong preference and love for punk.

Darth Revan
yeah same here... I don't listen to a whole lot of punk but I like it a lot yes

Deathblow
The Clash, The Stranglers, The Ramones, Iggy Pop, The Undertones, The Buzzcocks, Rancid and Frenzal Rhomb are my fave bands, but apart from them I don't listen to much punk.

slasherpunk8604
punk rocks.

Mr Zero
Old school punks would kick your pathetic hippy ass for "smokin the good shit" you ****ing stoned loser ****.

You are as punk as woodstock. Die.

Mr Zero
And Keanu is a *** without the balls to come out of the closet.

end of discussion

Darth Revan
Dude, chill the hell out.

slasherpunk8604
For real.

*Takes a hit and cranks "Anarchy in the UK*

genna
ok heres the deal. punk was created as a form of rebellion....... and they were shit at it too.... im sure everyone has gone through the 'omg! the sex pistols are like, so totally punk! did you see what they did to the queen on their record cover?!" yeah.. whatever... sure they changed the course of rock music for the 1970's, but look at them!! they died as quickly as they came. they were talentless and everytime i see 13 year olds drooling over how hot sid vicious is, and how much they miss him, i seriously want to puke. their lyrics were no more than anti-monarchist, sexist, and racist propagander. end of discussion.

Darth Revan
uh huh... roll eyes (sarcastic)

honestly, who gives a shit if they were talentless? that was a big part of the whole idea... their music was just so damned bad. They weren't "shit at it" because they weren't great musicians, that was what made it a rebellion. Them not giving a crap what anybody thought about their music. True punk is largely dead, there are still a few bands out there that really are punk, but mostly it's gone. And I have to agree with you on that part about 13 year olds drooling over how hot Sid Vicious is. People who do that are missing the point of real, old school punk.

Jordon
Punk is Dead!Unfortunately the rotten stink of it's decay still molests us to this day (and I don't mean John Lydon).

Df02
and ur about as hard as your impotent cock. you die

Corlindel
no expression

Evil Dead
sorry I'm not your average 13 year old..........but the Sex Pistols owned. No talent? They formed the band when they were just kids for christs sake.......still learning to play their instruments. They got better.......as a matter of fact, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock are all very respected musicians today who have worked with many top stars of the music industry. As far as Johnny Rotten is concerned, again...no talent? The man has a very distinctive voice (which has gone way down hill in the past 15 years)...........so he isn't Frank Sinatra......what's your point? Everybody sings differently.......everybody has a unique voice. Let me guess......Bodies or liar would have been a lot better if Rod Stewart had sang them?

Sid Vicious doesn't count as a sex pistol.......he contributed nothing to the music whatsoever. The one studio album the sex pistols made, Sid did not even play on.

For those who say punk is dead........incorrect. Punk is still alive in kicking, you just have to know where to look. Take my favorite punk band of the moment, Corporate Avenger. The rawness is still there.......the rebellion is still there........the message is still there.

Darth Revan
yes

there are still a few "true" punk bands out there... Granted, the sound is different, but the idea is the same. The sad thing is that too many people these days thing bands like blink-182, Yellowcard, and Good Charlotte are punk...

Evil Dead
the only people who would even think of calling pop/rock bands punk are the 12 year old girls who watch MTV and hear Carson Daily call them "punk" because they are socially rebellious compared to N'SYNC and the Backstreet Boys.

Jordon
True Punk bands??? Punks dead!!! Rebelling against what? Against what exactly are they rebelling? I think it's time for something new! I think it's pretty bad to warm up things all the time instead of creating something original and new!

Evil Dead
well.......historicaly they've been rebelling against main stream society's commercialism and just plain "fake-ness"..........punk is the original genre about "keeping it real" and being yourself.

SeptemberRain
I havent listened to any new punk, but some bands of the 90's that were true punk were THe REfused, At the Drive-In, and AFI was untill the sold out in the new millenium.

Evil Dead
check out Corporate Avenger........if you've got aim, pm me your name and I'll send you some songs sometime (assuming you have cable/dsl)......

hypocracy in government........religion........they don't hold back.

SnakeEyes
i like the old school punk and the new school punk.
I think that blink 182 is punk, just a different type. But not Yellowcard or GC. I enjoy the Ramones and Sex Pistols also tho.......

Evil Dead
Blink 182's music is made for no other reason than to entertain the kids at their show...........doesn't sound very punk to me.

Just because they are a good band....or you like them, doesn't make them punk. Nothing wrong with liking more than one style of music.......

SeptemberRain
Blink is not punk. as i said before, any band who sell out or goes platinum isnt punk

Darth Revan
Yeah... I like (some) blink, but they sure as hell are not punk

Jordon
Maybe I'm alone with my opinion, but I think Punk was restricted to a certain time and by the End of the 70's it had destroyed itself. It became a uniform and as soon as that happened it became acceptable.
People got used to Punk rock attitudes and Music. It's not outrageous anymore it's dumb. I think that is the problem. People just hold tight to that imagery and attitude of a youth culture that was destroyed ages ago instead of creating something new, something that isn't just a new form of Punk rock. but I think for many people and bands today it's just far more convenient to rely on something that has already established itself as the ultimate rebellious force in the music industry and there is always an audience waiting for them. They are too lazy and maybe too scared to come up with something totally new. Something people ( and I don't mean the mainstream) will not like or agree with. I think every youth culture has its beginning and its end. And Punk rock has definitely ended ages ago!

Evil Dead
Jordon..........while I can respect your opinion, again I must mention the best punk band of today (in my opinion ofcourse) Corporate Avenger.........

listen to their stuff.......if punk rock is not still alive and kicking in songs like "Christians Murdered Indians", "Voting Doesn't Work", "Taxes are Stealing", "Jesus Christ Homosexual", "Enemy of the Gospel" and "Drug Dealing God" then punk is truely dead........

p.s. they have a new album getting ready to come out called Jihad Schmihad.........looks to be good stuff.

SnakeEyes
never heard of Corporate Avenger........

Jordon
I have never heard of them to be honest. But the thing is that Punk lost its sting you know. It is worn out. They might be a good band but they are in the wrong time. I mean you wouldn't start a mod or hippie band nowadays and expect them to have the same impact than they had in their ,Let's say "Prime- time". The only thing i am suggesting is that we stop to praise and copy other people's rebellion ,which had nothing to do with our generation and instead come up with something original. We lack our own identity ,because we are always looking up to that great Punk rebellion 30 years ago. But i don't wanna be unfair tell me about your Corporate Avenger!

Fearnix
has any one here heard of Bad Brains best punk band ever

bardock
i thought punk died back in the early 80's.

Evil Dead
The thing is.......hypocracy in today's government is not something of the past. It is a current issue. This point is driven home especially in songs like "voting doesn't work" which sites numerous times the presidential election of 2000, an election in which more u.s. citizens voted for Al Gore.....yet George Bush won.

Adawee being a member of the Cherokee tribe (as are my relatives...so I can relate to alot of what he states) likes to also do many songs about the hypocracy in Christianity.........which also is an ongoing issue. Songs like "Christians Murdered Indians", "Enemy of the Gospel" and "$20 Bill" drive this home.

I find the message of $20 Bill to be my favorite. Andrew Jackson, the president of the United States who put fourth the Indian Removal Act ........which forced native americans from their homes to live in government sanctioned reservations, away from "civilized americans" is pictured on the front of the $20 Bill. Hitler wanted Jewish men/women to leave Germany.......away from the German people. He went so far as to kill the ones who wouldn't comply. How is what Jackson did any better? As the song states, "If Hitler was on the $20 bill.....how would the jews feel?".................yet we still have Jackson's picture on it, throwing it in the face of all native americans.

Darth Jello
for the jackson issue, um, would you rather have reagan's face on the 20 like everybody seems to want (he was far worse than jackson).

oh, and HR and the bad brains/soul brains are pretty good but i was always more in to the southern Cali punk scene more than the DC thing.

Fearnix
good some one who knows good punk bands what bands do you like?

Evil Dead
Darth Jello.......I really don't care who's on the $20 Bill.......it's not my fight. I do however find it disrespectful to Native Americans, especially when we have what, 43 presidents to choose from to put on our currency........not to mention those like Ben Franklin who occupy our currency but never held the office. I'm sure our black citizens wouldn't like it if we some day decided to put David Duke on our currency. I'm just saying that I can see their point. Any political figure who blatantly calls a race "savages" and passes laws to keep them segregated from "civilized society" has no place of reverence in our society.......

Darth Jello
i would put eugene debs on the 20
as for what punk bands i like, here's a list: sex pistols, the ramones, channel3, the witchtrials, dead kennedys, LARD, TSOL, Minor Threat, Adolescents, DI, Agent Orange, Shonen Knife, The Joykiller, the crucif*cks, Wesley Willis, Tony Adolescent and the ADZ, and the Germs

H.M.Servant
Punk Rock will be around but its not a scene anymore like it was in the late 70's. Can't be I mean it was over before it started really, so how can it still be around?

But Punk rock isn't just about the music, as it is about attitude.
I mean punk has nothing to do with leather jackets or spiked hair (or these days spikey hair and shorts) but with attitude and having something to say.

Look at Rage Against The Machine. They are (were) more of a punk band than Sum41 or Blink182 will ever be. They're in it for the money and getting on MTV and selling t-shirts. they don't have anything to say, not like the pistols or the clash.

But my point is it doesn't have to sound like punk to be punk.
the attitude is just as important as the music.

Darth Jello
that makes Igor Stravinsky the first punk rocker.

scabby mcgee
this is completely off all of your guys' topics but... pop punk? How is that a real genre? I mean they are two conflicting terms. May be a small little issue but it has always bugged me.

Evil Dead
pop-punk isn't really a musical genre........it's more of adjective for pop rockers who like to dress/act like they are punks. The music is still just plain ol' bubblegum pop-rock........

scabby mcgee
Alright I have always hated punk for the most part. Mainly becuase the saying that "punk is more of an attitude than anything". That turns me off, I mean the attitude is f**k everything. I mean seriously though the Sex Pistols were idiotic, as far as their attitude they were clowns. Which is their basis right there, it's more about image than anything, and as punk is supposed to be the anti-pop it revolves around the same set of rules that true pop revolves around, selling records by having a cool persona.

Overall the thing is, genres are stupid, I mean punk has little to do with music style. Alternative is the most bland all encompassing genre in the world. Indie is being independent from...something. Grunge was a term for alternative (an already vague genre) band that wore flanels and probably lived somewhere near seattle during the early to mid 90's (but not the 80's).

There should only be two genres of rock music, crappy music and good music and they are assessed by each individual based on their musical merits alone.
