Jury Copeland
I have this square Magic Box with nine squares.
I want you to fill in the squares with numbers from 11 to 19.
Juz make it sure that if you add the three numbers horizontally, vertically, and diagonally... will give you the result of 45.
it's easy... juz make a try.
theReject
It's...too...hard...brain....will......explode!fear
School's out...no more thinking for me...
Jury Copeland
ok.. i'll give out a CLUE
silent_kisses
best I could do
Jury Copeland
good try... but 19+16+13 is not
45
Raventheonly
I'm not going to try it because i will sit there and try untill i get it... and that wil take a long time possibly...
silent_kisses
that's the one problem
cLoVi€
i don't have enough time..
and the other thing is that i never manage to do it right way
i always needed to put 0 somwhere
Jury Copeland
This can be a clue too
cLoVi€

jE¬KiLL¬HYDe
I hear that....
Jury Copeland
clovie dear.. that's so safe.
drunk_nazgul
No... a brain trap!
I'll save the thinking for school... I'm good at it there... smartass
Jury Copeland
There's a pattern in it... juz focus on the middle number... and you'll get it..
perhaps
drunk_nazgul
Um...
16.11.18
11.18.16
18.16.11
?
drunk_nazgul
I tried. I told you I was dumb. But it's a good mind... thing...
Jury Copeland
good try anyway
drunk_nazgul
I don't read rules and directions. They take too much time!
I'm gonna let someone else do it. Maybe Shaber could do it; he's smart.
Raventheonly
Dude... off topic... but do you remember where you got that gambit pic on your sig... because thats totally bad.
drunk_nazgul
o.0
Jury Copeland
i don remember where i got dat...
it's from a wallpaper... well, if it's bad for you ... den what now?!
juz go on with the Magic Box
dave123
well.... that was hard
dave123
once you realize 15 is the central number and the even numbers go in the corners..... its simple
cLoVi€
i know
Jury Copeland
clap yay!
smart dave
yep, 9 is always a mathematical magic for me...
the magic box explains something like this:
in every 9 numbers (eg: 1-9) take the median as the common number and place it at the center box.
then consider the ff combinations:
1 + 5 + 9 = 15 (the common sum)
2 + 5 + 8
3 + 5 + 7
4 + 5 + 6
or
6 + 5 + 4
7 + 5 + 3
8 + 5 + 2
9 + 5 + 1
we have the arithmetic rule that sayz:
an odd number is a sum of an odd number and an even number.
since 15 (the common sum) is an odd number, it must be the sum of an odd number and an even number (resulting to another odd number), and must be added by another even number. thus, we have two even numbers and an odd number combination.
the formula now is
even + odd + even = common sum ; or we can have
2 + odd + 4 = 15 ; thus
15 - 2 + 4 = 9
15 - 2 + 6 = 7
now we can fill it in the box
2 .. 9 .. 4
7 .. 5 .. ?
6 .. ? .. ?
then we will derive with an answer:
dave123
my method was similar to that, but with less actual calculations
Jury Copeland
yes, but yours is more likely to "trial and error method".
what i presented is TRUE to any 9 consecutive numbers.
you can use any 9 consecutive numbers like 2-10, 12-20, 51-59, 34-42, etc.
Raventheonly
Very facinating. What level math are you at Jury?
Jury Copeland
should i say engineering math?
besides, i really like mathematics ever since
Jury Copeland
Just a quick answer
No use of calculator please
it's easy.
If you got 1000 + 40, how much will it be?
Add 1000 again...
Then add 30...
Add another 1000...
Then add 20...
Add another 1000...
Then add 10...
How much did you get?
Just a quick answer.
Jury Copeland
Did you get 5000?
Lianslo
5000? i dont know...i just added it in my head
Lianslo
i thought there was some big trick to it...not just adding up some numbers
Jury Copeland
I'll accept 5000 but that doesn't mean it's the correct answer...
...because it's the common figure anybody could answer.
Lianslo
your absoluetly right...my math teacher once showed me how to prove that 1+1=1...so i suppose anything is possible!
Got any more magic boxes? I wanted to try one myself, but then dave ruined all my fun
Jury Copeland
See, how mathematics can sometimes be deceiving?
If you add those numbers in your head, you'll probably get 5000... when the real answer is supposed to be 4100...
That problem was tested and proven to be the most effective mathematical illusion.
Jury Copeland
no2 but there's only one Magic Box I know...
where you can use any 9 consecutive numbers and you'll get the same problem over and over again... but the solution is always the same.
Lianslo
alright, back up the math train here...the real answer is 4100? *adds them again, on paper* whoa....i just got 4100 when i wrote it down...that was weird....
Raventheonly
5000 ~~~~ missed the philosophical part srry... i finished calculus nowhere near you, your way above me.
Jury Copeland
Lianslo has proven it.. it's 4100
Lianslo
i caught my error tho...i added the 10+20+30+40 and for some reason decided that it was 1000 instead of 100....you tricked me
Raventheonly
ya the 100 place tricked me
.... its so simple yet an illusion.
Lianslo
are you a math major or something mr. copeland?
Jury Copeland
blame it to the zeros
Lianslo
thanx for the mental stimulation!
talk to ya later! night!
Jury Copeland
i finished computer engineering and i took 7 Math subjects but the rest of our subjects were all math related
Jury Copeland
thank God... i passed 'em all sweat
Jury Copeland
I rather want to make this thread a Mathematical Mind Bogglers... instead of making another thread...
I have a question...
How would you make SIX = 9 aside from positioning it upside down ?
Jury Copeland
well?
Jury Copeland
what now?
I am a Sock
I know that proof, or a similar proof (1=0,1=2, ect) . It's false. It uses an ilegal move, like dividing by zero.
I am a Sock
6-->9
__
|__ |__|
|__| |
would it be to move the bottem left corner of the six to the upper right corner?
dave123
nope, i knew 15 was the centre number, you told me 18 was in one corner.... therefore 45-15-18=12.... then we just fill in the rest logically
dave123
this is a roman numerals question,,, IX upside down is XI or something, making 9? something to do with 9 i roman numerals, i knw that
Jury Copeland
well, that was juz a clue... you can put them in very corner...
what i mean there is that... the process i made was true to any 9 consecutive numbers... not just 11-15.
try the numbers from 20 to 29...
get the median then determine the common sum... then the process proves itself...
Jury Copeland
you got me there...
well, to make SIX = 9.. juz simply cancell out the 'S'
then you'll get IX = 9
Jury Copeland
Need more Magic Box?
Let's do some shuffle in the problem then. Given the series of numbers from 35 to 43 and the partially filled-in Magic Box below, complete the Box with these numbers, at the same time figure out what the Magic Sum would be.
Jury Copeland
Another Magic Box Problem
Find out what series of 9 consecutive numbers that can be formed in the Magic Box if the Magic Sum is 21. Please fill-in these numbers in the Magic Box.
Lianslo
^goodness i should know how to do this....we learned all about series, and sums in my last math class....i should just go find my notes
Jury Copeland
go now go!!
Lianslo
i'm trying figure out the magic box...the magic number isnt 117 is it?
Lianslo
i got it!
38 43 36
37 39 41
42 35 40
and the magic number is 117
now...on too the series stuff...(i'm such a nerd)
Jury Copeland
yeah you got it right!!!
see? it's so easy
now, on to the second one...
Lianslo
grr...i'm getting frustrated....i'm looking through all my school stuff as we speak, and i can't find it! i feel as if this wouldn't be hard at all if i could just find that equation!...Sn= 1/a (sub something)....convergent, divergent....if only i could remember!
Lianslo
your so helpful
can you tell me the starting or the ending number?...cuz then i got it....
Jury Copeland
sorry no2 bt I can't tell ya.
Lianslo
well, i don't have time to solve it now, i've gotta get going...but dont worry, i'll be working on it, i will not let your math problem get the best of me!
I'll ttyl my math friend! night!
Jury Copeland
Magic Box aside, who can figure this out?
If VenomfanFan is 20, Abbita is 15, Frost and Pao are both 5, and Clovie is 10, how much is Vampiree by the same system?
anybody?
Lianslo
hold your horses mr. smarty pants...i've just about got the second magic box problem figured out!
Jury Copeland
it's ok dear... you can show it to me anytime
Lianslo
4 11 6
9 7 5
8 3 10
Lianslo
yeah, thats right, i've conquered all your magic boxes!
Lianslo
and i'm gunna try not to be offended by the fact that you don't think i'm smart
Jury Copeland
that's the one reason why i like you girl... you're smart.
Jury Copeland
should i say 'THANKS" too?
or shall we proceed to this one:
Lianslo
lol, its all about the math here
well, as much as i would like to get to work on the next problem, i've really gotta get to bed! i'll ttyl! night!
Jury Copeland
ok, g'night, then
sweet dreams.
wuTa
i hate math gimme a riddell
Lianslo
you too
Jury Copeland
wuTa>
This question is some kind of an Ice Breaker in this thread, not Math actually.
So can you figure out the answer?
If VenomfanFan is 20, Abbita is 15, Frost and Pao are both 5, and Clovie is 10, how much is Vampiree by the same system?
Jury Copeland
now what?
Jury Copeland
com'on guys....
what do you think is the answer?
Jury Copeland
so no one wants to answer the simple question
can't wait really
Jury Copeland
answer!!!
Lianslo
lol, if i'm not around nobody wants to answer your questions!
§wordpoint
what question? :messed:
Jury Copeland
If VenomfanFan is 20, Abbita is 15, Frost and Pao are both 5, and Clovie is 10, how much is Vampiree by the same system?
Lianslo
JC, to be quite honest, i'm not sure what this question is driving at...all i can see is that the age first goes down by 5, then by 10...then up by 5...so i would guess it would go up by 10 the next time, which would make Vampiree 20...but that can't be right, too simple...so i don't know...
but in other news...i'm on your sig!
Jury Copeland
no2
Lianslo
well, i knew it was wrong...you didn't have to tell me
and have i told you recently that you talk w/ smilies a lot?
Jury Copeland
VenomFanFAN = 20
Abbita = 15
FROST = 5
Pao = 5
Clovie = 10
Vampiree =
?
Clovie = 10
Abbita = 15
Pao = 5
VenomFanFAN = 20
FROST = 5
Vampiree =
?
Lianslo
15?...i don't know...i'm beginning to feel stupid
Jury Copeland
15?
..and how did you get 15?
Lianslo
well, mr. math teacher
...i noticed that the difference b/w Clovie and Abbita's ages was 5...frosts age...so then the difference b/w venomfan and pao must be vampiree's age.
may i ask you a personaly question?...how old are you?
Jury Copeland
let me say 4 years older than you are
Lianslo
lol, alright, fair enough....so did you just graduate from college?...or is your major gunna take you more then 4 years...
Jury Copeland
It seems hard enough t'figure out what the answer is...
If VenomfanFan is 20, Abbita is 15, Frost and Pao are both 5, and Clovie is 10, how much is Vampiree by the same system?
The answer indeed is 15
But the reason why it has to be 15 is very simple...
You can notice the highest was
VenomFanFAN = 20 (and obviuosly the longest name mentioned)
now i know at this point you got the idea.
VenomFanFAN has 4 syllables multiplied by a certain number which is 5, which makes it 20.
Abbita = 3 x 5 = 15
FROST = Pao = 1 x 5 = 5
Clovie = 2 x 5 = 10
Therefore Vampiree (Vam/pi/ree) = 3 x 5 = 15
Simple.
isn't it?
Now that ends the problem.
Jury Copeland
I finished 5 years in Computer Engineering...
Lianslo
hard enough to figure out what the answer is?....i hate it when ppl skirt around a question
but i've been thinking...maybe i'll whip up a problem and make you solve it!
Jury Copeland
now i'm scared
but let me tell you that i'm not that good in MATH
but it's my fav'rite subject though
but i can try
Lianslo
lol, i'm sure you could do it! *starts looking for a good problem* but not that good at MATH you say?...then what do you consider yourself good at? (sorry...i'm a rather curious person...and when ppl evade my questions, i tend to ask a few more
)
midnight
Hi! I'm Dead. A lost soul. Looking for my Jesse. Have you seen him in Summerland?
Jury Copeland
i'm good in ART i'm sure of that
but let me tell you what my favorite MATH subjects are:
Arithmetic
Algebra
Plane Geometry
Solid Mensuration
Plane and Spherical Trigonometry
Analytic Geometry
Differential Calculus
Integral Calculus
Differential Equations
Engineering Mathematics
Probability and
Statistics
did i forget one?
Lianslo
^ya...got a bit lost on that one myself!
showoff
well, since your the king of math, my little problem shouldn't be an issue for you....Given a 5 digit humber, if one writes a "1" behind it, it is three times as large as if one writes a "1" before it...what is the number?
R@ven
boo!!!! integrals!!!!
Lianslo
yes! i've stumped the master!
Lianslo
i don't know what time it is for you, but its 2:17 am here! (a bit late to be thinking so hard about numbers
) so i'm gunna go to bed, i'll ttyl! night!
Jury Copeland
it's so hard, you know... sweat
but i got it at last...
the number is 42857
428571 / 3 = 142857
this is how i got it...
Mighty Yoda
i would never have worked that out
Jury Copeland
i worked on that for almost two hours
Mighty Yoda
jesus. You have more patience than me
Jury Copeland
juz bcoz i cant sleep if i couldn't solve dat one.
Mighty Yoda
well you figured it out
Jury Copeland
Another ice breaker since some of The Magic Boxes are still in the making
:
I was walking along the road when I met my mother-in-law's only daughter's husband's son. What was the relation of this person to me?
Jury Copeland
I discovered another solution:
The verbal equation that can be derived at the problem is:
10x + 1 = 3 (100000 + x) ; where x = is the 5 digit number
10x + 1 = 300000 + 3x
10x - 3x = 300000 - 1
7x = 299999
x = 299999/7
therefore,
x = 42857
Jury Copeland
Back to the ice breaker:
Lianslo
wow! nice job!
I got it using a similar method...but i'm sorry i made you stay up so late trying to figure it out! But i understand how you feel, on my math 4 final i had this one sigma notation problem that i could not figure out, and i was gunna have to come back later to finish it...so all during choir practice i sat there, singing, but not really thinking about what i was thinking...but thinking about that math problem. I finally figured it out and shared that w/ all the ppl around me, who proceded to give me the "alright, your weird" look
(sorry...that was a rather random story
) and i know you'll prolly want me to answer your other question...but i'm absolutely terrible w/ those kind of questions! *thinks about it anyways* ...hes gotta be your son too...cuz if thats her only daughter, she married you!
Lianslo
yes! I win!
Lianslo
yeah, cuz i keep solving all of yours!
i have also decided that this
is your fave smilie...
Lianslo
your a poet and you didn't even know it!
but i will definately remember, being that you use it all the time!
but thats a sad thought...gone from KMC....i suppose it will happen to us all someday
Lianslo
another personal question: where do you live? (besides the X-Men Supreme Universe
)
Jury Copeland
Juz another ice breaker
What day of the week will April 5, 2020 fall on?
Jury Copeland
Why not try some Math Tricks
Math Trick #1:
Grab a calculator
1) pick number 1-9
2) multiply this number by 3
3) reverse digits. If digit is a single digit number, add a 0 to the beginning. (i.e 06, 09etc...)
4) multiply by 9
5) reverse digits and subtract the smaller number from the bigger number. (i.e 123.........321-123)
6) reverse digits again and add together (i.e. 123+321)
7) square number
Your answer WILL always be 1185921 if done correctly.
Lianslo
I don't have time for this right now...i'm over in the GDF trying to decifer (sp?) your thread on revelations! I feel as if i must, basically b/c it always lifts my spirits to find fellow christians on KMC
i'd also still like to know where you live...just what country really....
