Is time travel possible?

Tired Hiker
I don't think it is, as in the 'Back To The Future' type of time travel. I know time actually slows down the faster you go, but I think the closest most of us will come to time travel is driving a car or running as opposed to walking. The faster you get from point A to point B, the faster you travelled through time. Right? Maybe?

HockeyHorror
i dont believe it, but anything is possible these days.

§pearhead
The only thing I could see causing it is somehow tapping into a different dimension that lets you travel through time rather than space messed

and that seriously makes me doubt it happening

silver_tears
Time travel would disrupt our world, so I think there are laws in nature to prevent it erm

moonwalker741
i wouldnt be surprised if a time machine is created, im using back to the future facts for this, so my theory is, if we go to the future or past, a parodox will be created that will mess up the universe, it could be true

heres and example:

your friend got hit by a car and died, years later you created a time machine to save your friend, that was your intention for inventing it, to save your friend, so say it was present time now (2004) and the event happened in like 95', so you go to 95 in the time machine and save your friend somehow from car that was gonna hit him, so my question is, how is that possible? the reason im saying that is because you created the time machine to save your friend. so if you change the event of the cause of going back to the event, it has to like mess up the timeline and the universe

silver_tears
How would you return, since once you save your friend, there would be no point in the machine and it would therefore not exist confused

moonwalker741
exactly, thats kinda my question

silver_tears
Which means you wouldnt be able to go back into the past in the first place and it's just a vicious cycle erm

moonwalker741
oh have you seen back to the future? well if you did your talking about the space time continuim..well thats true....well theres differnet answers by the way you look at it

silver_tears
I have all three actually big grin I love that movie.

moonwalker741
yeh i have the dvd set, i hav the newer box set though, 'cause they messed up the video dimensions in the original dvds when they first came out, so i mailed the disk to them and they replaced it and mailed it back.

plenTpak52
That was in that stupid movie The Time Machine.

Anyone read the book Timeline by Michal Crichton (spelling)? It says this wierd shit about how time doesn't exist and its just the way our minds think and etc..read the book

moonwalker741
well i rele never revloved around that, and plus in the movie, when he prevented it everytime, the girl still died, theres a difference.....

...and the movie wasnt that stupid, i though it was decent and a good plotline, i heard the book is so much better though, all books are usually better

ragesRemorse
Einstien believe so, and that guy knew everything. Although he did have trouble tying his own shoes whcih is why he wore loafers,so maybe he just got lucky with that whole relativity thing.

Seriously though, yeah time travel is possible,i mean i travel through time just about every night. My girlfriend lives in England and i live in the states, When i call her she is always five hours in the future, but she doesnt tell me how she does it.

ragesRemorse
theoretically speaking if you could connect two black holes together you could create a rift in time (wormhole) so assuming you werent torn apart into nothingness while entering the wormhole when you come out on the other side you be either be in the future or the past.

yerssot
last time I checked he was human, a race known to make mistakes

lil bitchiness
Anything is possible, just not very probable. And no, i dont believe time travel is possible and as ar as i know Einstein proved that time travel is not possible, as opposed to being so.

As i said before, knowing the future would be extreamly dangerious for human race.
Traveling into the future would be even more dangerious, as everyone would use it to their own advantage.

Dexx
what does the relativity of time have to do with time travel. yes, the faster you go, the slower time passes. however, that is only relative to the person't that surround you, not to YOU. Time will pass the same for you going light speed as for the guy sitting and watching. it's just the time of the two rapported to eachother that differs and is relative.

time travel involves the eternal problem. the paradox: two opposing sitiations simultaneously available. Like me meeting myself if in travel into the future or the past...because, you see. time travel (as we percieve it, but shouldn't) is actually taking the person in discussion from 'here' and take it to 'there', instead of taking the person from 'now' and take it to 'then'. That's when the paradox occurs.

if someone dies and everyone mourns him, you go back, save him, then come back to your time..where that someone lives, and no-one mourned him. how is that possible...it's like the reactions to his death never happened in the first place. and you're the only one who knows it. fact is...the world does not revolve around the supposed time traveller. as it would be in that case.

my opinion is that it's not possible....not as we so far percieve it anyway smile..us the common folk

lil bitchiness
Exactly.

Also, lets say we are somehow able to travel through time in the future, and someone from the future comes telling people what is going to happen, would be very dangeruous for us.

If someone came from the future ad told us that a nuclear war is going to occur, then whats the first thing we are gonna do? Start building arms, getting ready for war, wich would do what then? Then it would cause nuclear war anyway, since building your nuclear weapons and arms would provoke other countries....

this was just an example.

Same with plague. If you get told from the future that the plague will come about, the first thing everyone is gonna do is get all ideased/ill people together in camps, which will then create a plague.

Not only is it not possible, but time travel wouldnt be in our advantge.

m!$hA
i dont think it's possible, coz how would they get all of our body peices, emotions, feelings, thought......basically how would they get our physical and emotional things from one time to another?

Dexx
not to mention that..should we be able to travel to the future, then theplace where (or when wink) i arrive would also have this travelling technology, having passed through the time i pass as the current time.

so, when i meet myself in the future, not only it creates the paradox, but he wouldn't even be surprised to see me goddamit! stick out tongue

finti
dont think it is or will be

Evy_O
Einstein did not believe in time travel with the meaning we have given to it today, as in a big silver box that's shiny and can take you to Stonage

He just proved theoretically (therefore not accurate, just possible) that time can be bent. I've read about this theory of his but it's too long and I can't translate it in english, sorry sleep

Reborn Again
Science fiction claims it is possible, but reality does not. I think some people think it may be possible because we would hope it was. Thus, the age old question erupts: If TT was possible, would you go back and kill Hitler to stop WW2? What consequences would that bring to the present world? Socialists have said that if WW2 didn't happen, we would have used the money spent on the WW2 to explore space much sooner and thus be colonizing space right now. However, WW2 taught us a very lesson in looking for warning signs and creating national defense. It's also said, if TT was possible, if you went to visit the dinosaurs, if you stepped on an insect, and returned back to the present, that one killing millions of years ago, could ultimately change the timeline in a dramatic way. The world would be a MUCH different place.

silver_tears
What's all this about the future stick out tongue
Why not the past?

fruits
time travel to the future is possible, but there is not way to return. einstein proved tha the faster you travel, time slows down for you. so if you got in a rocket car that could travel the speed of light, and you traveled in it for about 3 hours, a few months or years could've passed because while time was slowing down for you as you were traveling at the speed of light, time was going normal for everyone else. or was it that time stops if you reach the speed of light? i think that's what it is. the closer you get to the speed of light, the slower time is for you. so if you go near th3 speed of light, that oucl happen

Dexx
because only in the future, would the guyz also have time travelling technology...hence my future self not being surprised. stick out tongue

it's all ridiculous ofcourse. my first post says what i think about this..

Dexx
err..no...read my first post.

time does not pass slower for you when closer to light speed. YOUR time is percieved slower by the OTHERS who are not. be assure...a second will last as long for you as it will for the rest.

if you consider travelling at light speed for 10 years and then return to earth, then yes...that is the closest thing percievable as time travell. though it is not.

it is only bending time thanks to it's relativity

The Force
time travel is impossible, it's friggin science fiction.

and to the whole thing where you saved your friend, i believe the time machine would still exist, but when you went back to teh future, it would not be your future, it would be an alternate reality, like in back to the future, because- nevermind, my brain hurts

The Omega
Fruits> And where would the energy come from to create an entire NEW Universe, just because you travelled around in time?

Tptmanno1
I think time travel is impossible.
Lets think. If we throw out the last two of Omega's examples and we work with the first onw we still come up with time travel being impossible.
For example:
If scientists invent time travel then in some point in the future of the universe time travel will be erradicated. This is because when time travel is widly used any concept of time will be lost. If we can alter time and travel along it, then it time itself loses its meaning. Then like Omega has said previously (Long time ago in the Evo. thread) Of time becomes ifinite then the impossible becomes possible because there is an infinite amount of time to accomplish it in. Now at one time in the future. It makes no difference when because it can happen at any point in the future and it would have the same outcome. At some point in the future some idiot will get ahold of a time machine and get the bright idea to go back to when time travel was invented and inadvertanly prevent its occurance. This would mean all knowlage of time travel would be erased and history would be changed. By this logic, time travel could have allready been discovered and erradicated without us ever knowing.

One last thing:
Time travel is widly based on the idea that the future is set. This goes against the second example that Omega gave. The example of someone being unable to change the future goes against the idea of free will and embraces fate. So with that being the case. No matter what we do it has allready been taken in account for and will not change. But this means that a god or some superior being must exist to control time and that goes against the beliefs of Atheists.

Therfore the only alternative is that Time travel is impossible.

Lady_Eowyn3
Time travel to the future is very possible, it happens daily everywhere, in fact in a few seconds you will travel to the end of this sentence. We travel through time as the day goes by, we change the future everyday, and we meet our family members in the future, in fact as soon as my brother comes back from the bathroom, i'll meet my little brother from 10 secs from now, and when my mom wakes up i'll meet my mom from a few hours from now

Alpha Centauri
I don't think time travel will be brought into the public eye or even put to use. You can bet someone is trying but it's far too dangerous. It's probably how the world will end.

Some moron invents time travel, goes back in time, messes up the space/time continuam and we'll all cease to exist.

"Time travel to the future is very possible, it happens daily everywhere"

They mean vast time travel. Like traveling hours, days, weeks, months or years ahead of the time we're in.

It's also flawed coz you'd likely have to specify not so much a date, but where you wanna travel to in the sense of "After so and so happened". In which case you don't know what's gonna happen in the future.

The one on black holes was his last decipherable one. I was certain that it had already been done as the same theory was around in the sixites , but evidently not confused

The Omega

Tptmanno1
Well how do you percieve time is?
Is the present Now and the past is done and beind us and the future is yet to be done.
Or
Is time like a film from the beginning of time to the end of it, and we are acting out just a small portion of this ever changing film-like thingy??

Omega> I ment that in the example where you try and fail to kill your grandfather, the future must be allready set because you are inable to change it. In that case we must be unable to change the future from where we are in the present because our present is the past for someone in the future.

But in the "Able to change time" example the future is not set so time travel will eradicate itself.

Ushgarak
Not that I necessarily disagree, but Hawking has been known to change his mind.

Basically, we know not nearly enough about things to make definitive judgments here- and anyone who has ever laughed at the ignorance of the past should be VERY wary of declaring something totally impossible just because we cannot see how it would logically work.

Hawking's point about travellers from the future is only as insoluble a point as earlier astronomers who tried to work out why, in an infinite universe, there were any visible gaps in the starfield. Later understanding caused hypotheses to be created that answered this point and this MAY happen with time travel as well. Or it may not, but like I say, if the only problems you can find are ones of logical understanding, I would be very wary of writing the concept off.

shaber
oh yes, he was on about the little black holes.

Reborn Again
If TT were possible and the future has not been written then going back in time is our only possible course. However in changing the past, we alter the future and thus the butterfly effect comes into play. We affect ourselves and everything around us. However if we play to the scernio that every action we don't do is played out in an alternative reality, then changing one event in the past collides with an alterative one that this event has occured...so both realities could cancel each other out or over lap the other creating a rip in the fabric of time...which could destroy foul things up royally?

Ushgarak
Omega, you seem to spectacularly miss the point.

"IF time-travel to the past becomes possible sometime in the future, there will be time-travellers travelling to this here and now."

Says you! If in 500 years time we find out that time travel is possible and there is a good reason why that didn't happen, people who held absolute views like you will be thought of as cretins.

Only a person with a closed mind says that any restrictions set up always fall.

They cannot travel to 2004- why not? I don't know. But we don't know enough about the subject to write it off. Perhaps it is only developed at a point where it is restricted to the point where no-one ever does it. Perhaps time travel does not work in a way perceivable to people. Perhaps it always shunts into parallel universes. Perhaps it has a range and you can only go back so far. Maybe it is possible but Humans never discover it before becoming extinct. Maybe it is something we cannot even begin to comprehend. You say none of them wanting to do it is impossible? You don't know that- you don't know a damn thing about possible human behaviour in the future. In fact, that use of the word 'impossible' is totally unscientific- at best, it is only implausible. Who the hell knows about any of it? The whole thing is totally unknown territory. Enough genuine scientists still believe it is possible, Hawking Hypothesis or none- and his empirical 'proof' is disputed.

If you seriously think what you say above truly renders time travel totally impossible then I think you are a bit of a fool. One should not be so decisive about things we know so little about- and I totally disagree with you saying it cannot be compared to the starfield. I say it can- the gaps could only be exaplined by hypothesis at first, and not solid science, and so it may be with time travel.

Until you can actually demonstrably prove that time travel is impossible- rather than simply pointing out logical flaws in our current understanding of the issue- I believe no scientist has any business totally writing off the concept- lest he or she risk being ended up bundled with those who thought logic prevented us from creating flying machines, breaking the sound barrier and going into space. Understanding changes over time.

Incidentally, that hypothesis doesn't say you can't- simply that you won't, as evident from that you didn't. I don't necessarily agree with it but dismissing it on the grounds that you don't like the Universe setting its will against yours demonstrates a poor understanding of the concept.

vvvrulz
For time travel to exist, human matter would have to be ionised and made to travel beyond the speed of light. Sounds improbable now, but in a century or two (if we don't finish ourselves off by then), who knows.

Dexx
travel?..where exactly..

you see...we use the word travel when expressing ditance-wise situations. we don not even have a word for moving through TIME, because such a concept isn't developed yet.
So you can't say anything for sure..as you do over there

I believe that you could be able to go into the future because your time machine is still there but not into a point where there was no time machine.

Linkalicious
I'v read most everything up through the 1st 2 pages of this thread, don't care to read the rest because i see what everyone is getting at.

And this isn't my idea in and of itself, it's just poorly reguritated from a John Titor website. According to that guy, there is such thing as a multiverse.

As in...if you go back in time to kill your grandma, you would be in a completely different universe or alternate reality to that which you previously lived in. Killing your grandma wouldn't erase YOUR exsistence, but it would eliminate the possibility of your future self in THAT reality.

The idea that you killing your grandma would erase your exsistence would mean that there is only one universe.

I know this comment can be quote and ripped to shreds, but I bring it up more as an alternate way of thinking about things. Kinda like all the different incarnations of Neo in the Matrix Reloaded, where each one of his choices leads to different outcomes.

Well, don't bother quoting this and going through proving it wrong. I, myself am very skeptical. All I can say right now is that, time travel MAY be possible...we're just not far enough along as a race or species to know.

Dexx
no, i get what you mean.
the theory of the multiverse...you go and kill your grandma and then when you come back you don't exist. those don't oppose eachother....it's just saying that the multiverses are linked together. story-like theories, though...
as omega said. where would you get the energy of creating a totally diffenre universe (one without you in it if you kill your grandma) simply because i modified something in the past.

Time Travel? I dunno know about that. If Time Travel is possible don't you think that Aliens (if they exist) would have that power by now? I mean, Time travel isn't only for humans. Maybe aliens already have used time travel to change our universe?

*puts down Sci-fi aliens comic book*

Stealth Agent
Hmmm is it a good book i might get it?

I believe Time travel could be real actually this is more what i believe

Reality could be ****ed with. Scientist will probably screw around with reality and matter and all that good shit sometime in the future.

I do believe if you were to go into the future or tear through reality or something weird like that it'd have to involve moving very fast.

Arachnoidfreak
Time travel is possible. Sit there and you are moving into the future second by second. stick out tongue

The speed of light is the fastest you can go before moving backwards in time. The only particle that scientists believe can do this is the Quark, which even then, is a theoretical particle. To jump forward in time, you'd have to create a rift in the 4th dimension...which isn't going to happen. Ever. Humans will be extinct by the time we figure that out.

Or, you could just take a plane to a different time zone on earth. Thinking about the time difference freaks me out sometimes. I can watch a cartoon set a specific time here on the east coast(US) and then I'm talking to someone 3 hours later who is on the west coast, and they are watching the same cartoon I saw 3 hours ago...wierd. It's cool though.

OnLy_FoR_OrLi
Life would be awesome if time travel was created, then id zoom out of high school sad

WhiteEagle
I don't think anyone can say for certain, it's a paradox. If I were to go back in time and kill my Grandfather, how could I have existed to kill him to begin with? Heh, just watch Futurama. Anyway I don't think it's something that I will have to worry about in my lifetime.

And just on the aliens topic. Has anyone ever thought that human beings may be the most intelligent or technologically advanced species in the universe? Heh, I certainly hope not but it is a possibility. stick out tongue

KidRock
I dont think time travel is possible..if something happens in the past then its over..

Reborn Again
But if you 'zoom' out of h.s., where would your knowledge come from? Would the knowledge you wold have learned in those years be there when you zipped back into reality: billions of tiny neurons spontaneously create themselves in the branches of your brain, and all the memories you had during this time just become inserted into your mind? How would this work? If you time travelled into the future to skip h.s., how were you there to acquire this knowledge all through h.s. to get your diploma if you existed out of the realm of time? Food for thought, eh?

ash007

Fëanor
the problem with this train of thought ash is that time is not linear...that is concept we (man) invented in order to allocate certain moments of the day...a way to use as a point of reference for a moment that has happened beyond the point of now, our present which we've labelled the past...time travel IS impossible because it goes against the concept of physics even at the quantum level...and einstein's theory though i'm somewhat vague on that is the faster we travel from point A to point B, the idea of time slows...and the closer we get to the speed of light it slows even further...

so if you do build a time machine...it would be a machine that travels from point A to B and not B to A...AND it must therefore travel faster than the speed of light...the results would be that time for the occupants would slow to considerable degree while outside the machine time would continue as usual and normal...everything would age quicker other than you...time travel to the future is possible if we can build a shipt that can surpass the speed of light...but then we'd have to overcome the possibility of not regaining our solidity...anything going that fast becomes energy matter...

Stealth Agent
If you could travel into the future in the blink of an eye would that be able to prove if things are destined to happen?

Fëanor
but what if you could travel back in time...would it really be that?

because from your perspective you're still moving forward in time but now in the past...so the past becomes your future

time around you could be theoretically altered but your timeline frame could not...it will always move forward even if you could travel back to a point in time in the past...therefore you're always moving forward in time...

today it's 2004, you want to travel back to 2000...an hour later you've accomplish it, you're in 2000 but an hour ago you were in 2004

so your future has become the past and your past the future...a conundrum...

i even confuse myself

sennett
Sorry to piss on the bonfire a bit here, but there is no way that backwards time travel is possible.

Ever.

Aside from the "Grandfather Paradox" and all the rest of it, there still remains the very basic fact that if, at any point during the entire history of creation, anyone, no-matter who, invented a time machine, all time and all history would instantly be combined into one big lump, right at the first millisecond of the universes existence. People would come and go, flitting between times, and the start of the universe would be just as technologically advanced as the end or, indeed, the middle. Don't think that it "will happen one day" because, believe me, if it was you'd know all about it.

Some might say "oh but governments and people will cover the time machine up and there would be very strict rules". You must remember that we're dealing with the whole of time here: right from the first to the last seconds of the whole universe - several billion years. No government could possibly keep it hushed up for that long, and, if it were possible, it would get rediscovered more than once anyhow.

Forget "people coming back to see you", if time travel was ever going to happen it would have already done so.

Now forward time travel is different. We are doing this all the time just by being objects, and ones "journey through time" is supposed to be that much faster when travelling at great speeds. This is so much in evidence that even satellites orbiting the Earth at God-knows how many miles per hour gain a few microseconds each week. Their internal clocks are moving so much faster than clocks on Earth that they need to be updated regularly so that the damn things don't get lost.

So my opinion is this: time travel backwards? Never. Time travel forwards? Possibly, but only dishearteningly slowly.

But I may be wrong.

TheFilmProphet
I have always thought about time travel and preventing and changing choices and decisions would be kind of scary in some ways because the slightest decision could change several peoples lives.

Example: You know how sometimes you think about something like if you go to the grocery store and you get home and think danm I forgot to get some milk I should bought some. Now lets say that for whatever reason you want to go back in time for something small like this just so you can do something you think you should have done before. Now what if you went back in time to the grocery store and decide to get the milk you forgot to get except by doing so you made your stay at the grocery store five minutes longer and when you finally get out of the store there is a shooting in the parking lot outside and you are caught in the crossfire and die. Then lets say you were a father who supported your family with everything they had so in result of your death your family become homeless and now have to live in the streets.

The reason all of this happened was because you decided to change something small you thought would make no difference in changing.

Turbo-Cajun
time is an imaginary function. The past does not exist except for inside the human brain. The past is a part of the human imagination, same goes for the future. You can never be in the past, and you can never be in the future. You are always in the now. The present. Most people spend their lives worrying about time that does not exist in any real sense, only the immaginary. Most people spend so much time worrying about the past and present they never appreciate the present and what you are experiencing at this exact moment in time. Dont worry about time travel machines, worry about who and what you are right now.

It's not imaginary, it's the 4th demension. There are 8 other demensions that we can't even percieve. Would you call those imaginary? Just because We can't see it, or hold it in our hands does not make it imaginary. You are physically passing through time as you sit there in your chair reading this. We are travelling through time (into the future at a rate of 1 second per second)

Loving_Daniel11
Thats not what I mean. I mean travelling through time machine, looking into the future, and going back through our past.....

Imperial_Samura
I think it could be possible, theoretically, perhaps not to actually, physically go back, but at least to "look" back. But either way, it will be different from the movies. No time travelling cars.

I truly hope not, if we were to be able to look to the future and avoid mistakes that would be allright, but should we go back and change the slightest thing wouldnt everything be different? and not neccesarilly for the good. Also life can be hard sometimes and what if you were to look forward and see your self alone and a failure, your entire life wouldnt be like that but the end result would leave you utterly deppressed.

T.M
um.... no to put it simply it is physically impossible to go back or forward in time.

what eleveninches said is right yes

jnolan
yeah your absolutley right t.m., and 150 yrs ago it was physically impossible for man to reach the moon. And in 1400ad it was physically impossible to circumnavigate the globe as the world was flat then, truth and reality is based solely on what we know and the bottom line is we dont know sh*t

Loving_Daniel11
Thats right.

Cipher
I have to agree with TM; I don't think its physically possible either. Going to the moon is a far cry from moving through time........

It would be kind of cool though.

Loving_Daniel11
Yea it took until the what..Mid 1900's (Correct me if Im wrong, I know nothing much about that type of stuff cause I never pay attention in class) for someone just to get to the surface of the moon, and no telling what inventions will come about near the end of the 2000's if the world is still here.

If we can build a craft that would travle at light speed we will be able to travle back in time (on of instines thorys) but it is physicaly impossable for anything besides light to travel at such speeds hence the name.

I also bilife that traveling even 1 second back in time would create a paradox destroying time its self.

i agree with hawlkings, Einstine did figure a way of traveling back in time (something to do wil flying a craft at light speed round the eart) but he also proved light speed was imposable, the whole idea of a craft traveling at light speed is foolish as humans black out at forces of 6 g's so what in hells name is light speed gonna do to us?

Well thats true Einstein was a true genius, but most humans pass out at 6 g's how meany g's do you think we would get traveling at light speed which is 299 792 458 m / s i cant quite remember what the speed of 6 g's is but i know its not meaured in m/s

Loving_Daniel11
I agree on that Filth. And anyway, what would we think and say of/to ourselves if we went back in time or forward in time and saw ourselves? Id die.

Dogbert
This I disagree with. Look at the butterfly effect. Everytime he tried to correct something, it scrwed up the future even mroe to the point where he kileld himself before he was even born.

Filth
We could not see our selves by traveling back/falwards we would effectivly destroy our selves as only one of every person can exist in single time.

Filth
If we were able to see our oncoming mistakes and correct them effectivly we would not have seen the future mearly what could/should have been.

The Omega

Loving_Daniel11
Thats too...out of my league to understand. Im retarded.

Napalm
I believe that It could be possible but If we can I dont believe we should. Because going back in time would change the path of history.

Loving_Daniel11
I agree there. And by making this thread I had no intentions of saying that it 'Should' Be done, just said it'd be nice. But I can see where all the changing paths of history and such comes from.

Filth
I know that but you would have to accelerat to get to such speeds, even if it could be done with out accelerating you would have to decelerate.

Bardock42
you could do that slowly though couldn't you?
Isn't the problem that your mass would increase or something?

Filth
True you could do it slowly but imagen the amount of distance you would need to slow down is would be messured in lightyears so you would be far away from the earth.

And i think you are right about the mass, not sure tho

Boswald
If time travel were possible then evidence in the past should have already suggested it. Assuming this then the past would have changed and thus we wouldn't be aware of it. Given these two statements, then all of history should look roughly the same as all events should exist at the same moment and quite literally they either can't or our ability to perceive the same is impossible - so no. It can't be done.

Dreampanther
Read Vernor Vinge.

I tend to agree with him, that in the future you would be able to travel FORWARD through time, but I rather doubt we will be able to travel back again. Except maybe in a spiritual way, since our spirits don't weigh anything. I actually think that is what happens when we die. We depart out of our bodies, or swop bodies, or go on to another plane of being, or whatever your religion/philosophy tells you to believe in, and then we look at our own lives and we realise how empty or how full they have been. It is this that is our heaven or hell. There is no objective all-knowing judge, unless it is we, ourselves. We judge our own lives and we do it seperate from our bodies, therefore detached from our bio-chemical inputs and able to judge clearly, detachedly, objectively, purely spiritually.

We look at our own lives and in looking, we judge, but it is in a timeless instant that lasts forever. Time become meaningless, since time only affects that which is material, not that which is spiritual. Those who perceive they have lived empty, bleak, lonely and wasted, desolate lives, live in a kind of eternal hell, an eternity that may only last as long as a second for a person still living. I think that is the only way we will ever be able to go back in time, as ghosts, able to see all the mistakes we have made, all the opportunities we have wasted.

The opposite is true as well, of course. If you have enjoyed your life, and lived every moment to the fullest, and opened yourself to love, you will look back at your life in that timeless, eternal instant and be in heaven. However, we will never be able to go back in time in a physical way, I think, with our bodies and our memories unaltered. But we will be able to go forward into the future that way. In fact, we can already do it. It's called cryogenic-freezing. You just can't ever come back. Except maybe in your dreams, and your imagination. Which might be real enough for you, I don't know, but I am quite happy where I am, thank you.

plexed
time is like hight and length just another way of getting around for us to change our travel through time is like a 2d cartoon person trying to move in the 3rd dimension

Now I know how people like Philosophicus feel when they are reading posts such as $%^%&*(w/e you think you know) and get quite "disgusted with some posts" that he don't even want to post anything... lol....(too childish for him)

Storm
Quit provoking him.

peterKSL
not prevoking him.. prevoking u people... lol

SaTsuJiN
but then life would be a simple game after that... oh I dropped that pricess vase.. let me just time travel.. bam fixed it.. isnt that a little 'too' perfect?.. and what if you got time travel traffic lol .. hundreds of people jumping time simultaneously... a collision at that speed would be pretty dirty.. also..the act of meeting oneself in the past I think can both have wonderful or disastrous effects of course.. perhaps you can escape gaining a scar you have one your arm or something.. and then again you might ruin your way of percieving the world. Eventually it might even be like living a second life.. still I think a world without regret wouldnt be a good world..because I think we'd eventually lose the ability to regret after having so many "2nd chances" at different events.

For those who dont believe in time travel. its only impossible because we dont have tha technology.

peterKSL
You only say that it is perfect because you imagined in your head that it is perfect. People lived in this world, and some claims that experience made them who they are. If one is to erase one's experience, then what would you be??? Simple, just a baby in a grown up body!!!

To make it simple, the world is perfect already.... Nature is perfect... and this is just part of nature, and for you to discuss it, and for me to object, it just makes me feel wonderfull!! For everything going on around here is just perfect!!

sk8stuff09
sometimes you can go in the future in your dreams, and memories are going to the past.

brandino
if string theory is correct then you can only go back to the time the time machine is finished because the time machine would not exist
but where would you go?
void?

DarkAge
If time machine became possible at a certain point in the future, and time goes forever beyond that point, then wouldn't we have been inundated by an infinite amount of time travelers?

Draco69
My brain hurts.... blink

QuietPattern
i think not. its physically impossible.

debbiejo
I think they did accomplish that in the "Philadelphia project". Heard it was awful. I do know that the further out you are in space, time slows down.

eleveninches
I think we will do it in about 170 years or so.

What somebody could do is to leave the majority of their money in their will, which would, in the future, go to fund a time-travel project. However, one of the conditions of them using your money is that they travel back in time to when you are still alive, and give you loads of advanced technology and money and historical records of the next 100 years.

SaTsuJiN
Do you mean time travel itself? or this current life? or my thoughts on the consequences of timetravel?

but like you were saying... if we erase who we've become through our experiences, we'd just wind up being an empty shell in the end.

peterKSL
Look at the past.... how people learn, to be "perfect"... people learn from mistakes... that is the natural tradition of becoming perfect... Time travel is yet too complicated to understand, and to predict what is going to really happen... Maybe it is yet to be proven impossible... As Philosophicus said, "imperfection is perfection"...

Afro Cheese
Maybe we will.. never know. At one point the thought of flying machines was thought impossible as well.

debbiejo
They did it and are continuing to do . PHILADELPHIA PROJECT along with other projects.

I just did a quick calculation and found that to travel at the speed of light it would require you to travel 450 billion km for 35 days... and that's at an acceleration of 100m/s/s which is probably too much for the human body to handle.

anyway... I don't think time travel would be possible even if we were able to travel at light speed. Perhaps we would be able to look at the past but we would not be able to interact with it...

for example,

if I were to travel away from the earth at a speed faster than the speed of light I would be travel forward through 'light waves' and, I guess, this could be interpreted as travelling backward through time. Looking behind I would see events reversing and when I stopped travelling I would see the past.

However, when travelling back to earth I would be travelling back through the 'light waves'. I would be seeing the light waves faster than I would normally be seeing them and time would appear to be moving faster.

Therefore, when I returned to earth time will not have changed...

if that made any sense to anyone :P

NicktheBassist
ok, i have read some books regarding the subject so let me lay it out for you:
According to Einstiens theory of special relativity, at speeds close to the speed of light, time and space are "warped", that is that time seems to slow down and distances seem to contract. this is actually proven. there was an experiment done that went like this: An atomic clock was placed in a jet and another that was identical was placed on the ground. the jet flew at super-sonic speeds for a while and when it landed, it had "ticked"slower than the one on the ground. so this proves special relativity.
so acording to this, if a person traveled extrememly fast then they would have experienced less time that everything else. Thus time travel, because what is time travel but time going faster for everything else except you. so that is time travel into the future.
time travel into the past however is impossible unless several, very strict, requirements are met. The first is that the many worlds theory is true. that is the theory that every time an atom comes to a "cross roads" the universe splits and in one universe, the atom took one path and in the other, the atom took the other path. so as you can imagine there would be many many universes and you would need to find a wormhole to travel between them (which opens up a whole new contoversy that i won't go into) and the chances of you finding a universe that is even slightly similar to your own are very slim. the other condition is that even if you found a time machine, then (as was said before) you could only travel, at most, to the moment the machine was created. so for large scale travel into the past to be possible, you would need to find a time machine that has exsisted for a VERY long time.
WHEW *wipes sweat off of forehead*, well that concludes me very long explaination on time travel. I'm off to go post on the "what do you think about death" thread about death and the many worlds theory.

NicktheBassist
wow, its been three days and no replies. did i burn you guys out with my super sciencey explanation? smokin' oh well, i guess i summed it all up for you guys.

debbiejo
Will be able to travel through time? Yea, I do it all the time.

beaujay1
you know i was reading this very interesting book about time and what exactly it is. it is very possible that we could have a parallel universe opposite of ours, were time would run backwards in our opinion. proof of these two worlds coexisting together is kind of complicated, but it basically means that as long as each parallel space does not become stronger than the other, they can exist side by side. this can eventually lead to time travel (who knows) if it was ever possible to figure out...that be goddamn cool, but freaky!!

beaujay1
string theory has nothing to do w/ time travel, thats just about different dimensions...read the elegent universe for the real info. and read the universe next door for awesome info too!!~

debbie264
I don't think that'll ever be possible..And even if it is somehow made into reality, messing with the past is dangerous, and shouldn't be done.Nobody should try and play god.

debbiejo
I have read about Tesla. Books like "Angels don't play this Harp." They are manipulating the weather, and screwing things up. And also the Gov. program GWEN. using frequency waves and such, can cause earthquakes, but that is another thread.

Astronauts say that wen they're in space that their clocks slow down. So they are aging slower than the people on Earth (when they are in space).

Arsenal
I don't think a time machine should ever be invented. The possibilities of what would happen after it was built would be too dangerous (universe crashing down, dangerous people coming from the future)

DarkCrawler
If we would be able to move faster then light, we would be able to travel in time.

We see things that happen in past everyday...look at the Sun. You see it how it was eight minutes ago.

Look at a star in the sky. You may see how it was 2000 years ago...

debbiejo
In a way, we are traveling in time already, just not at an accelerated rate. blink

Reborn Again
Now there's a redundant response. Happy Dance

However, you do bring up another question. How is it that Time passes quicker for some and slower for others?

Anyone care to field this?

debbiejo
Here's a thought about why time passes quicker for some and slower for others. This might sound bizarre, but I'll throw it out there.

For children time seems to go by very very slowly. The younger the child the slower time goes. And if you think about it children aren't aware of linear time. They are always living in the very moment of what they are doing..really getting into it. For them summer vacation seems to last forever, like a year...But the older you get, so they say, time flies..
Why is that? Have we lost living for the now and enjoying every moment for living in the past with all it's memories, and the future with all it's hopes, and fears, and regulated by time. Time passes more quickly when you're day dreaming then if your watching a pot of water boil..... I think time passes more quickly when you're not living in the moment, when your mind is filled overflowing with the past, present, and future with all the pain that comes with it...What do ya think???

Yea, it makes since to me. blink

Reborn Again
Interesting theory, debbiejo, however children from birth to a certain age are unaware of the passage of time so time does not exist for them, thoretically. Only when they become aware of the meaning of time and its flow through the universe does time really begin for them.

In adulthood, time is relative, and can give the illusion of speeding up and slowing down, i.e. "Time flys when you're having fun," or "boredom makes time seem like an eternity." In reality time is constant, and depending on your actitivity, the illusion of time passing faster and slower is there.

That's my theory.

2864212
the only way into the past is to enter a paralle world. and to do that we would need to find a worm hole. and what r the chances of that happening to us. also you would not know where it will take you do you realy want to risk being seen by someone in the past. that mite set that person or people rong . lol just a theory.

peterKSL
Conscious mind makes time seem slower while sub-conscious mind doesn't...

When one is bored, one tends to be conscoius most/all of the time, if not, then one is dreaming/not bored...

finti
and were does it leave when you are concentrated through work and have no concept of time?

4life
Time is a joke. The same goes for space.

peterKSL
One can only know/realise time if one thinks about it... and when you think, you are using your conscious mind... Not the other way round finti...
and humans switch from conscious mind to sub-conscious mind very frequently...
