My absolute favorites right now are: The Pillows, Dragon Ash, Shiina Ringo, Utada Hikaru, BoA.

And even though its not really part of this genre, I'm obsessed with the works of Sota Fujimori...from the Konami music series DDR, bemani, dance mania etc

also, Japanese music inspired me to go and teach myself the Japanese language. smile

BlackHatDefect
OHHH DDR music rules! The pillows are ok but a bit overrated

My brother's got a Guitar Wolf album lying around somewhere, but I have an album to one of my favorite Japanese bands. They're an atmospheric hardcore band by the name of Naiad.

Red Superfly
Electric Eel Shock, Polysics and Mad Capsule Markets are staple bands in all my playlists.

The only J Rock I'll listen to is Guitar Wolf.

maham
I heard 1 on a japanese channel n I loved it! I m not sure if it was rock or not (not gud at music genres) but the lyrics n the music was GR8! The title of the song translated into eng was 'the cherry blossoms r still bloomin' n I thought that was really deep.

Quincy
Asian Kung-Fu Generation owns.

As do Dragon Ash, Orange Range, and Antic Cafe

XxILuvVegetaxX
i wuv an cafe<3 i love their new pv, its so cute~! X3 lots of has/will be coming out recently...gazette, a9, miyavi, etc,. I can't wait to get gazette's new single~!

I tried out some other j-rock bands ( Dollis Marry, Metis Gretel, etc. ), but I didn't like them as much.
I did get Phantasmagoria's Synthesis Songs CD recently and it was OK.

Bardiel13
When is comes to Japanese music, Kadenzza is freakin magic.
WWWRRRAAAAGGGHHHH!!! \m/>_<

Don't listen to too many bands from there, besides Blood Stain Child, Naiad (Awesome), and Sigh (Super Awesome), and of course, Kadenzza (Epic!!)

a lot of music is superior to american music....european for instance, the best metal bands are from europe.... i have heard some of this japan sh**.. can say i like it but ive heard worse....pop is the rock bottom of music. even bach is better than pop.

and i know that lots of ppl listen to it just because its cool to listen to jap music. not because its good. to me jap rmusic got almost the same status as pop.

Do you even understand all that ching chong chao they sing???

Not only is that comment prejudiced and stupid, you also state that pop is even worse than Bach, one of the greatest musical minds ever.

yeah he is one of the gratest musical minds ever but just face it... ppl dont listen to it(not many)...

and yes it was a bad example.

Some European or American metal bands sing, shout or scream in such a way that it might as well be in Japanese anyway, because they're indecipherable.

You can rarely ever decipher Jacob Bannon's lyrics, but that doesn't stop Converge being one of America's best metal bands (In my opinion.

I can't believe that he said "even Bach is better" ...that's just ridiculous.

Also, the Japanese language sounds nothing like "ching chong chao." But, what's wrong with listening to music in a different language? Oh, and many great metal bands have been influenced by Bach.
I do not listen to some Japanese bands, simply because they are Japanese. Sigh and Kadenzza have serious talent, unmatched by even some European artists.

No there is nothing wrong with listening to music in a different language... i just stated that I DONT LIKE IT!!! or do i have to listen to j-music because its "the latest thing"???.....

i know how japaneses sounds. but to me its jibberish.....

And please stop bugging me about the bach thing!!! yes i admit it was the worst example! and yes some of the best metal bands(and i listen to bands that are heavily infuenced by classic musik) are unfluenced by bach. But i dont like classic music itself, but i like music that got inspired of it...

I ADMIT my big mistake with the bach thing okey!!! so please stop buggin me for it....

Alpha Centauri
Japanese is no more jibberish than English is to Japanese people.

Only if you're a weeaboo. And that would be a terrible reason to listen to j-music...

sugarrogue
Gackt, Hyde, Gazette.

manorastroman
momus, cornelius, shonen knife, capsule giants, ruins, boredoms, melt banana, boris

that is all.

Slay
I'm just bumping this thread because Mad Capsule Markets have come back from their hiatus.

And to post my list, because J-rock has gained my interest lately, won't go as far as to say that it's better than western music or such, but I like it. My favourites:

Mad Capsule Markets
X Japan
Dir En Grey

sugarrogue
Go JRock Go!!!!!!!!!!!!
