MC Mike
Recently I've seen advertisments for poker to be part of the 2004 Olympic Games. What do you all think of that?

Dr. Strangelove
No

Here is a article on ESPN Page 2 poker writer who touched up on the subject of poker in the Olympics.

no way... and i love poker and play it all the time for serious money and i dont think it should be

Fire
a poker is a game of chance and there for should not be allowed at the olympics

Dexx
played at a professional level, i would hardly call it a game of chance. But it does not belong at the olympics

ElectricBugaloo
it's stillup to luck, as any professional poker player will tell you, Dexx

Dexx
yes..but only to a certain point. it's HOW you play whichever hand...
that involves skill.
i didn't rule luck completely out

Red Superfly
You have to be kidding me.................

What's next - Olympic Snap?

Seriously, if Poker can get in, then video games and snooker should also get in too.

wuTa
oh HELL NO....gambling is NOT a sport...why doenst the olympic comittee throw in slot machines and give the old farts medals while there at it

forumcrew
luck is involved but if it was only luck anyone could be a pro which isnt the case.. games like no limit holdum are based on how you play more then what cards you have... but it doesnt belong in the olympics thats for sure.. just dont say its pure luck especially if your not a serious player because i garuntee youd get taken for all your worth if you tried

Red Superfly
There's no denying that there's serious skill involved in Poker, but there's also just as much skill in a good video game.

If Poker gets allowed, so should video games.

forumcrew
very different skill then in video games anyone can learn a video game and get good at it... sports need athletic ability and practice and some people ive seen play poker for years and still suck but ive never met someone who couldnt get good at a video game

Red Superfly
IT'S THE SAME THING!

You could easily put someone in a Quake 3 arena and have them professionally train, and they'd wipe the floor with anyone. Same as someone training years with Poker.

Good sports games such as Pro Evolution Soccer offer managerial positions ASWELL as the skill side. Get two pros up against each other and it'd be stunning and tight.

Anybody can get good at Poker, anybody can get good at a video game. A pro in either of them would cream them. Some video games, particularly the AAA long-lasting multiplayers ones, never seem to have limits on how much a player can know. Just like Poker in fact.

I can't believe they are even considerring this. Olympics is supposed to be about physicality as well as strategy. Don't give me crap about Poker being physical because it involves "body language" - that doesn't count for anything in Olympics.

By that token we'll be seeing Olympic pin the tail on the donkey next.

Dexx
you are simply wrong. as the guy said... anyone can get good at a video game. which isn't the case for poker. there is even a measure of talent involved in it. you have to pay a great deal of attention to what swings around you..study face expressions, etc.... it's not as easy as it looks.
and, no...not everyone can be good at it.

either way..we agree that it doesn't belong in the olympics

Linkalicious
no...you are wrong dexx.

Anyone can be good at poker just the same as video games. It all matters how much time you put into it. The more experience you have at playing poker...the better you are at it. Some people say they have a "nack" for reading people's faces. But the only way they have that "nack" is because they've studied several peoples faces.

It is every bit the same as a video game. It's about anticipating the other persons move, and doing what is best for each situation. JUST like a video game. The only difference is...video games require more hand eye coordination.

It still doesn't belong in the olympics..

forumcrew
link you are wrong do you play poker? ive played with guys who have played years people who play seriously and sitll are not good enough to win.. people i can beat repeatedly 10 out of 10 times without thinking twice... poker is not as simple as learning which cards are best.. it is way different then a video game

Linkalicious
yes, yes i do play poker, at a local casino pretty regularly. I'm not THAT good, but i can tell you that i'm a damn sight lot better at it than I was when I first started.

You didn't prove anything with that statement other than...yes, there is a lot of luck involved in the game. Also, I guess i really can't say much for your friends that you play against.

Professional poker players, PLAY A LOT. That's a fact. Just like professional video game players, professional poker players are the best at what they do. They get the best by playing a lot.

Just like with sports and video games...some people will always be better than others, with less practice than others. The video gaming you do with your friends is a casual experience. Professional gaming, is no different than professional poker.

Red Superfly
THANKYOU Linkalicious

Clearly these people haven't played a multiplayer game.

Dexx
pff...it is you who is wrong. i KNOW people that no matter how much they play....they could never be as good as some other people i know. i know it....but there's no real way i can prove it to you, now.. is it..

video games are different. anyone can learn.
i've played plenty of mp games superfly roll eyes (sarcastic)

forumcrew
dexx is exactly right.. but im done arguing with people that dont know that which they speak of

Linkalicious
roll eyes (sarcastic)

yah, i'm sure you guys are QUITE the holdem players. I'll be seeing you on ESPN i'm sure. wink

forumcrew
yes because the world series which has gotten big on espn is obviously the only holdem event... newb

Linkalicious
newb?

I expected a much more mature remark from you forum.

i name the most commonly known holdem tournament to the...umm...better part of the world. (primarily because of ESPN) And THAT's what i get as a response from you?

You've been hurt ever since i tried telling you that EXPERIENCE matters when it comes to playing cards. But that's cool, just keep assuming that you either "have it' or "you don't." I'll assume what I want, you assume what you want.

And we'll leave it at that....Bash free.

forumcrew
haha yea my friend actually typed that response. i do agree experience matters i just dont think its anywhere on par with video games becasue there are other talents involved

Linkalicious
i totally agree. And the reason why i said i expected a more mature response...is because i know you're more mature than that.

So it's all cool.

Perhaps comparing it directly to video games isn't the best. I was more comparing it to the part where you get to know your opponent...

G.P
As long as you keep it on topic (Poker in Olympic Games ?) carry on, but I don't want these little arguments or I'll close this thread.

Linkalicious
sorry bout that G.P. ...tried clearing it up quickly for ya, and the likes of the thread.

Ummm...Poker shouldn't be an Olympic sport because....ummm...Athleticism isn't involved. (or something)

§nakehead
If they allow special oylimpics to be played they can have poker
