The machete is just being used as a metaphore in the lyrics - the machete is a very common agricultural tool/knife first developed for farming like the sai and most people who worked/work on rural land use one and are usually poor. Hence in the song they're calling the 38' - the poor man's machete as in the common gun for the person who can't afford better.
