Thomas Jane Talks Punisher 2! Source: Edward Douglas Thursday, July 29, 2004

While in town promoting his new movie "Stander," about the legendary South African bank robber, actor Thomas Jane talked to Superhero Hype! about the possibilities of a sequel to his 2004 comic book inspired vigilante action flick, The Punisher. An avid comic fan, Jane is still very enthusiastic about the character and the possibilities, despite the lackluster box office and response to the first movie. According to sources, Marvel's Avi Arad is still intent on getting a sequel off the ground.

"Yeah, we have had discussions. We want Jigsaw to be the bad guy," he told us, "We'll probably shoot it for much the same budget and probably go to Australia or South Africa where we can stretch the dollar. I'd do another one. It's a niche market film that will always be that, and that's what it should be."

He wasn't bothered at all by the perception that it was a disappointment at the box office. "In today's market, if it's not a blockbuster, then it's somehow considered a failure. I just don't understand that point of view. It saddens me that if a film doesn't sell a million Happy Meals that it's considered to be a failure, and that is just incorrect. We need to change our view of that. In today's market, there's certainly a place for the blockbuster type of film, but if you can make a film for $30 million and its grossed like 50-something so far worldwide and then do a bunch more business on DVD, then that film has done its job. I like movies that don't have to cater and appeal to everybody. Those movies are great, movies that cross the board and you can take your six-year old kid and your grandma, and everybody loves it. Fantastic! And there should be more movies like that and there will be, but there should also be movies that cater to people who like to see something different. People that have a need to see something that is off-the-beaten path a little bit. That's what 'The Punisher' is there for and that's what it's there to serve. It's for the fans and I'm very proud of it. I hope they don't ever process it down and turn it into something that it shouldn't be."

We wondered if maybe he'd approach the character any different having the first movie to work from. "Absolutely. I like the character a lot and I had a lot of fun with him. For me, the second one would be an exploration of the morality of what he does. He's so close to being a bad guy and does what he does cause more harm than good? Those kind of things are interesting for me. Where do you draw the line between what you're doing being justifiable and not?"

He told us a bit about how extreme the second movie may be. "The first one ended with him busting into that club and taking out all those people, and the second will open where the first one left off. It will just be incredibly violent and then it will just get more and more violent as the film goes on. That's the kind of film that it should be! It's a real take no prisoners punk rock kind of an action film, and g**ammit, it should piss a lot of people off!"

Arachnoidfreak
YES! MORE VIOLENCE! I can't get enough of that shit.

SnakeEyes
man, i want to see the first one! when does it come out on DVD?

TheFilmProphet
THE PUNISHER DVD: SEPTEMBER, 7, 2004

SnakeEyes
thanks. Is it worth buying?

TheFilmProphet
The movie is GREAT but I don't know what the extra features on the DVD will be like yet.

Spawnie
Wait for the directors cut or something, untill then rent it. I know the cut out some scenes there from the movi, so it might be worth waiting for the directors cut. I say its a collectible DVD, cuz still it's just the first Punisher, it's not dazzling but I had fun watching it. I think they might bring us more in the second one. BAre in mind that Thomas Jane turned out to be a great Punisher, well at least from my point of view.

Arachnoidfreak
Oh hell yea, Thomas Jane looked the perfect Frank Castle.

MORE VIOLENCE!

§nakehead
so franks gonna get more and more violent like in the comics

TheFilmProphet

Sounds to me like its gonna be even better than the first one evil face

§nakehead
why would it tick people off?

TheFilmProphet
I don't know confused Maybe the violence or something I guess would make some sensitive or old people mad.

Joker1237
Hey they got mad at Batman 89 for the violence.

I hope for a PUNISHER part 2, I think Jigsaw would be a great choice as the villian in this movie. Anythoughs on this?? Jigsaw needs to have his face ruin, before he gets to be the villian evey one knows.

TheFilmProphet
I also think Jigsaw would be great in Punisher 2 just as long as he is played by the right person. Another thing I want to see is the Punisher just punish a handful of criminals around the city during the movie besides fighting Jigsaw.

Jane Talks More Punisher Sequel Source: About.com Thursday, August 5, 2004

About.com chatted with The Punisher star Tom Jane who shared some ideas he had for the sequel...

There's a pretty good storyline in Circle of Blood," Jane said. "I like taking storylines from the comics and running them together. It would be great if Circle of Blood was one of them. And again, there's some pretty good stuff from the War Journal stuff. I'm hoping that number two is called The Punisher War Zone. Like we could do The Punisher: Circle of Blood or The Punisher War Zone. I think that'd be fun."

Jane Talks More Punisher 2

Thomas Jane is giving fans a bit more detail about plans for The Punisher 2.

Actor Thomas Jane told About.com that the Punisher comics could provide more material for the sequel: "There's a pretty good storyline in Circle of Blood," Jane said.

Arachnoidfreak
If they used the Circle of Blood storyarc for the next movie, I'll shit myself from excitement.

crazy
the last sentence says it all

SnakeEyes
what is the Circle of blood story arc?

Arachnoidfreak
Circle of blood starts out with Castle being escorted into Ryker's Island Federal Penitentiary. Stuff goes on inside the prison, they try to escape, he meets a group called the Trust, he works with them, he finds out they are making an army of "Punishers", and he has to stop them. Read it sometime, it's really good.

SnakeEyes
hmmm, Welcome Back Frank is the story line that i have considered picjing up in a tpb. I have read basically no Punisher comics, (but tons of other stuff).

Arachnoidfreak
Welcome Back Frank IS really good, but Circle of Blood is a classic in the Punisher titles.

TheFilmProphet
I think both stories are equally great and it would be interesting to see either one on the big screen.

TheFilmProphet
Can anyone believe that at one point Marvel actually considered making a Punisher 2 direct to video and replacing Thomas Jane?

Arachnoidfreak
If they did that. I'd go on a rampage through Marvel Studios. mad

TheFilmProphet
We both would!! evil face

ScarletSpider
That would be dumb if they did that. Sure it was no block buster with rave reviews and it didn't break any records, but it had a target audience, and it was recieved very well in that audience. It made some money and got the character name out there for further use. Don't expect another Spider-Man or X-Men because that's just not what you'll get from the Punisher. However you can get an entertainment, drama and some badass action sequences, so take what you have and use it as it should be used.

TheFilmProphet
Agreed I couldn't have said it better myself.

crazy
says it all

TheFilmProphet
Too bad everyone doesn't look at it the same way. wink

TheFilmProphet

ScarletSpider
It says Jane is also writing a Punisher story. Wonder if it will be any good.

TheFilmProphet
I think it will be

crazyspinz
they should make the movie about punnisher kills the marvel universe!

haha no, worst thing ever written. but punisher totaly kicks ass i cant wait to see the sequil, if they make it

Tom Jane on The Punisher Sequel
Source: Comic Book Resources
November 23, 2004

Tom Jane tells Comic Book Resources that Lions Gate is currently budgeting The Punisher sequel:

"They're really hot on the sequel since the DVD has sold so well," said Jane. "They're in the process right now of budgeting a sequel. We should have it in the next two weeks, sort of a preliminary budget, and then we'll start talking story, then writer and then we'll get going. I'll be involved in the story development. I probably won't be credited as such, but I'll definitely have input as to what I want to do."

darktim1
I remember him at one point that he would kill atleast 20 people at the beginning of the film don't know if it is ligit but sounds like great way to start the punisher2 movie.

TheFilmProphet
I think te whole thing will be great.

crazy
oh man i cant wait, i <3 punisher

TheFilmProphet

Vladimir

TheFilmProphet

ragesRemorse
Hope the next one is actually good, and has the punisher punishing people. Instead of a slow and misplaced story.

If its taking place in New York as the source said then I have doubt in my mind that it won't bring us back the classic Frank Castle from the books we all know and love.

. You know, personally as im sure everyone knows. I thought the punisher was an unforgivable failure. Not because the adaptation of characters. I thought the extension of emotion was a nice touch, but was presented in a dull slow presentation. The story however, could be confused with any other vigalante or revenge flick out there. The thing that set the Punisher apart from other vigalante stories, is that they were complex and ruthless. I liked Castle's character in the film, yeah he could have been bigger laughing out loud but was on a whole a nice portrayel. Granted he was a bit tame, but the Punishers character has to be changed some what for film.

The actions that make the punisher the punisher were missing. Some of his techniques were there, but not as relentless as they should have been. I believe there was one interrogation that included the Punishers techniques through out the entire film.

So maybe if they focus on an actuall story from the archives, face can be saved and thirst for punishment can be had.

dubefan
i am completely stummped im ususally pretty god at making sequals come to life in my head but now no so any ideas on what should go down?

KharmaDog
One suggestion, don't make a sequel.

dubefan
i know i know but its a cash cow so you know its gonna happen

Wolfie
I'll be looking forward to it. I loved the first one.

dubefan
yes the first one was boss

dubefan
so what should the storyline be about???

Nataku8188
Punisher getting killed. That would rule, because Punisher is the most one dimensional character Marvel has ever created.

dubefan
ya but hes a bad ass and that makes him cool

Sentry
Punisher is the most realistic comic book hero. Unlike someone who supposedly masters a 127 different fighting styles in a few years where it takes normal people all their lives to master one or two, and can take out anyone in the DC/Marvel universes say fanboys if he has enough prep time cough "Batman"... The Punisher kicks A$$, and he does it with realistic, tactical military equipment, not some sub atomic batarang bomb that can take out most of the JLA with one shot. Then again everyone has their own opinion, and opinions vary.

Now getting back to the subject, I think Howard Saint will be back as Jigsaw, and sends a whole lot of Yakuza after his A$$. Possibly crossover battles with Wilson Fisk? Bullseye? That would be interesting, but is just a guess, and I can't wait to see who he's gonna go up against.

ScarletSpider
Being one dimensional is what makes him fun. After awhile, I'm tired of hearing about Peter Parker's personal life problems, or Tony Stark boozing again, or Steve Rogers crying over Bucky's grave. I just want a stone cold vigilante killer who does over the top shit, in over the top stories, and kills a whole lot of people in sadistically amusing ways.

For stories, I think the Kitchen Irish storyline that was done a little while back in his title would be pretty sweet or Streets of Laredo.

dubefan
ya seeing jugsaw would be hardcore, id say ya to the yakuza idea but i saw the original punisher with dolf lundgren and it ruined the idea of the yakuza for me, too much knife throwing

TheFilmProphet
Well I do disagree with some of your views on The Punisher, but to each his own. I understand some of your arguements about the film though, and alot of the key material was either not filmed because of budget constraints or was just cut from the film. Even after all of that though the film was definitely better than I first suspected it would be and I am confident that the next film will improve in most areas and give us the ultimate Marvel experience.

wazz
Well what can i say, do you think this movie will be any good?

Jackie Malfoy
No I thought it was pointless.JM

papabeard
the first one wasnt the worst film ive ever seen , but it doesnt merit a sequel

Cinemaddiction
Ditto.

whirlysplat
I thought the Punisher was a nasty film. It borrowed more from old eighties revenge flicks like "The Exterminator", than the Frank Castle in the comics. big grin

T.M
IMO the first one sucks balls yes

IRTMU-Dragon
I didnt see anything wrong with it.

BackFire
I actually really enjoyed the first one, solid action/comic book flick. Cheesy, but fun.

I'm very happy that they're making a sequel.

SnakeEyes
same ^

tabby999
yeah i enjoyed the first one alot. and it was based on the comics, if you watch the making of section of the dvd you'll see them going through "Welcolme Home Frank" which is the comic the based the movie on

your saying punisher was better than blade?

Cinemaddiction
"Punisher" was totally uninspired.

BlazingBarrells
haha blade 1 and 2 are my fav comic adaptations ever. and punisher was alright, and i think the second one has potential, but nontheless potential doesnt mean jack sh*t now a days

MildPossession
Did not think much of the first one, even John Travolta was a bore in this film. If they do decide to go forwards with a second Punisher movie I just hope they can do something different with it.

crazy
The Punisher is my favorite comic book movie. I really liked Spiderman but The Punsiher is awesome, I have seen the hate it or love it stance on it usually.

T.M
spawn is my favourite comic book movie.

Tandrade
Mine is Spiderman!!!!!! stick out tongue stick out tongue

Wolfie
I really enjoyed The Punisher. I'll be awaiting the sequel.

Punisher kicked ass da first time! And its da most realistic comic based movie ever done. Spiderman should go die, becuase they ****ed it up with da movie. They should have never done it.! Wut do u expect da director is a freakin moron who filmed Xena and hercules. I knew it was gonna suck. Daredevil , i kind of liked it , it was pretty kewl, but most of all i loved punisher. They are workin on punisher 2, and its gonna come out in 2006 and i cant wait. I bet if they made it pg-13 den da movie would have grossed more dan $100,000,000!! I am sure. So all u mother f.... who say punisher sucked, go die!!! Cuz it is da best marvel movie ever made! And b*tches, i expect all u to go watch it when da 2nd one comes out! Or i will take da justice into my own hands and freakin punish u all!

I agree, it makes me feel like I am looking at a comic book cover while still having the movie element mixed into it.
