Alpha Centauri
Who, in your opinion are the greatest bassists of all time?

Bassists are so important in many cases as they add the boom of alot of the songs in any band. Especially when only 3 members play instruments in some cases.

Discuss.

Gonna kick it off and suggest Dirk Lance formerly of Incubus. Don't grill me for it. He is such an underrated bassist, very very good. Excellent infact. Not saying he's the best, just naming the best of bassists.

amity75
My faves are Steve Harris of Iron Maiden and Peter Hook of New Order.

Df02
Les Claypool - Primus

finti
Cliff Burton was extremly good, to keep to the metallica dudes I also would put down Robert Trujillo. Of course Maiden basist Harris. Glen Hughes was a great basist for Trapeze before joining Purple.
The "OX" John Entwistle( The Who for those with limited musical knowledge). And yeah Dirk Lance is a very good basist indeed.
Hard to make a fav one though since I can think of so many great ones

Victor Von Doom
Trevor Dunn of Mr Bungle and Fantomas.

Justin Chancellor of Tool.

Ben Kenney of Incubus.

Billy Gould of Faith No More.

Flea of RHCP.

Alpha Centauri
I didn't think you'd put Ben Kenneh in there. Cool.

Some of the stuff Flea does is just insane, just to watch. That's what annoyed me about Jason Newsted, he always played with a guitar pick.

Jeordie White has become amazing since joining APC.

I'm gonna put Chris Wolstenholme of Muse in my list also. Considering there's only 3 members and the bass still remains such a pivotal role, I think he's great. Not to mention the bass intro to Hysteria is astonishing.

-AC

finti
ohyeah Flea, see always forgett some great ones. Chris Wolstenholme, good call

Fearnix
Mike Inez (alice in chains) rock

Darth Revan
Incubus has been through quite a few bassists relative to how long they've been around, haven't they... confused

Alpha Centauri
I only know of Dirk Lance and Ben Kenney. They've also had two DJs as far as I know.

-AC

Darth Revan
Ah, my mistake. For some reason I thought they'd gone through three. Yeah, they've had two DJ's... Kid Lyfe and DJ Kilmore.

Anyways, about bassists... I can't say I know a whole lot of them. Dirk Lance is great. I'll be cliched for a moment and say that I also like Krist Novoselic a lot.

norrin radd

Rad_1
TYSON RITTER OF THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS!!!!!!!love

Darth Revan
...or not...

Spicy_Mchaggis
les claypool-primus
ryan martinie-mudvayne
bassist for tool, i cant remember his name.

moshtitan
Ryan Martine of Mudvayne is definitly one of the best.

ESP07
David Ellefson

ElectricBugaloo
we're gonna hear Flea and Les Claypoole a million times, i'msure.

Flea played on The Mars Volta's album, and I think that Flea only toured with Jane's Addiction for one summer, I'm not sure if he recorded anything with them or not.

el_barto
John Entwistle

Flea

And the guy from Primus (I don't know his name)

Alpha Centauri
Has anyone here actually heard anything by Muse? Hysteria is probably one of the best bass intros ever.

-AC

Fearnix
i love muse i have been lisening to them for like 5 years rock BTW they my fave band

ChickinMeat
yo buddy, his name is Justin Chancellor, i think i spelt it right!

Jon Myung of Dream Theater, he is an excellent bassist!

Marcus miller is also awesome, along with the great les claypool, Stuart Hamm, Dirk Lance, who is my main inspiration, and many more

Df02
probably because theyre the best stick out tongue

matchbox
pookie from matchbox twenty!!!

SeptemberRain
Flea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GABRIEL05
True.
--------------------------------------------------------
I'm gonna go old school here and I'm considering only electric bass players...

Jaco Pastorious: The first electric bass virtuoso, Ron Carter and while we're at it

Bootsy Collins

Stanley Clark (of course when he switches to upright bass he sounds a little dry, but that's neither here nor there)

oh gawd how could I forget Christian McBride he's a serious bad@$$ in my book one of the 3 best alive today

Alpha Centauri
Myung is an awesome bassist. Compliments John Petrucci well.

Nate Mendal, off topic, is probably the most useless bassist. I think that's what lacks on Foo Fighters records. Bass.

Tim Commerford. F*cking awesome.

-AC

el_barto
thumb up

ChickinMeat
petrucci is a legend

Fearnix
dose any one like Scott Reeder he kicks so much ass on the bass

finti
wouldnt it be better if he freaking played the instrument eek!

Krissy Von Doom
One time in the not too distant past, the then-current best Bassist was in the same group as the then-current best Lead Guitarist. I'll let you guess which duo this was.

Tptmanno1
I forget his name, but the bassest from RATM can't be touched!

Darth Revan
Tim something or other

Tptmanno1
Yea,
Hey I bought renagades yesterday!
Kickass! I know their all covers but insanly good.

ElectricBugaloo
I believe it is Commerfield, but he isn't a particularly great bassist.

the one i've been listening to mostly is Jaco Pastorius

Tptmanno1
no its Tim Bob, Thats what it says on the back of my Evil empire CD

ElectricBugaloo
it's Commerford

Tptmanno1
did they get a new bassist?
Im confused now.
But The one who did the self titled is crazy
have you heard the intro to take the power back? its sweet

Lord_Andres
Joey De Maio(Manowar) by far, just check out one of their songs called Sting of the Bumblebee

Lord_Andres
and you'l see what I mean, by far the greatest bassist

Alpha Centauri
It's Tim Commerford. He has aliases (Tim Bob, Timmy C, Tim.com) and he rules.

Simon Gallup rules. Can always make his presence felt even if it's in a whirlwind of a song.

-AC

taft
what if i said victor wooten

Deathblow
Chi Cheng was very good once upon a time. His work on Adrenaline was top-notch.

Bierbommetje
Dusty Hill

A true minimalist. He and Frank make for such a great rhythm section.

zeppelinfloyd
John Entwhistle... Noel Redding... John Paul Jones... Geezer Butler...

mr.smiley
victor bailey
victor wooten
marcus millar
and any one who claims to love bass guitar has to say jaco
i like flea a o.
he can flash and hold the low end at the same time.
in heavy metal i give it to cliff burton.
punk music goes to jerry only from the misfits.
he didn't have the d and g string.only replaced them with another e and a.that kicks ass!!!!
with hip hop hub of the roots for keeping it simple.
sorry guys but i realy to care for les claypool.just my opion so don't go trying to kill me over it but it sounds like flash over substance
