you stole my list .

CHEATER

im talking to TMH no expression

amity75
I cant agree with Kirk Hammet. IMO he is the weakest link in Metallica. He relies too much on effects like wah. James Hetfield is miles better. I often think how superior a band they would be if Dave Mustaine re-joined them instead of the overrated Hammet.

big gay kirk
Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi... whilst not technically superb, they have the rare attribute that their guitar playing fits the music perfectly... something that many guitarists who know more than three chords often fail to do....

ElectricBugaloo
ah, i forgot frusciante

kohl
johnny marr and bernard butler. blame britpop.

killthesunlight
ZAKK WYLDE
Cliff Burton (even though he played the bass)
Jimmy Page
Dimebag Darryl (if i spelt that right)
Kerry King
Eric Clapton
Kirk Hammet
Adam Jones
Randy Rhodes
Tony Iommi
David Gilmour
All 3 Skynard guitarist

killthesunlight
i forgot NEIL YOUNG

StinkFist462
ya ... but this is OUR fav guitarists though .... confused ..

anyways .... keep going people

loserib
amity you rock ive been saying that about kirk for years but here my list

randy roads
zakk wild
dimebag darral
dave mustain
and all three skynerd giutarist

KMC
I agree with most of those but I'd add Mark Knopfler and Prince

Kate xx

ElectricBugaloo
Mark Knopler...hell yeah

Prince...meh

KMC
Everyone always forgets Knopfler- poor bloke!
Please dont "meh" at Prince. If you saw a bootleg i have of him it'd change your mind. Its outrageous!!

Kate xx

total metalhead
i gotsta disagree there. of course he's not as good as Mustaine (also in my list) but then again very few people are, but i think he brings something unique to the Metallica mix. and anyone who is considered worthy enough to be a part of the greatest heavy metal band of our time deserves a place in my list.

total metalhead
dont i always? rolling on floor laughing

bite me smile

ElectricBugaloo
i really don't like Prince

harusho
billy martin and benji madden all the way!i luv benji madden

total metalhead
What the f**k? Benji Madden is your favorite guitarist?

KMC
Reply to ElectricBugaloo- Fair do's i guess but he's just done so much stuff that i think it'd be impossible to not like even 1 song.

Reply to Harusho- Is Benji Madden the one from Good Charlotte? if so, its your perogative but doesn't exactly measure up tothe greats! No offence...

Kate xx

killthesunlight
WHAT THE HELL!? you just completely ripped off my list and spell SKYNARD right

ElectricBugaloo
remember that some of the people on these boards are 13-17 year old consumer whores

amity75
Peter Buck
George Harrison
Roger McGuinn
Eddie Van Halen
Joe Strummer
James Hetfield
James Dean Bradfield
Keith Richards

Df02
ok, simple really...whenever theres a best guitarist thread its full of old guitarists (not denying theyre the best), so i wanna see a list of Guitarists of recent years who you think are good wink

Ben Weinman - Dillinger Escape Plan

ill add some more when i think of them confused

*unpreparedness is a virtue, i swear*

Ikobe
John Frusciante (and you KNOW it.) - Red Hot Chili Peppers/solo artist
Josh Klinghoffer - Bicycle Thief
Dave Navarro - Jane's Addiction

finti
agree with Ikobe...........................just a silent note: most of those old good old guitar heroes are still around though smokin'

amity75
Yeah John Frusciante. How recent are we going? Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead is awesome as well as being inventive so is the guy (Matt Bellamy I think) from Muse but his band is crap. James Dean Bradfield from Manic Street Preachers is my favourite God though. And he's recent.

KMC
I know he's been around for a while but Prince is an outrageous guitarist.

Kate xx

RebelPhoenix
Micheal Romeo - Symphony X (don't know if you would call that recent since they've been out for 10 years but it's relative I guess)

My faves though and I just have to mention them embarrasment (and these are well, not old old but old enough lol) are Slash and Richie Sambora.

Ikobe
Heehee, Prince, yeah. (:

Um... what about bassists? Flea, Krist Novoselic... the Pixies lady...

total metalhead
Tom Morello - Rage Against The Machine
Synyster Gates - Avenged Sevenfold
Peter Lindgren - Opeth
James Shaffer & Brian Welch - Korn (go on flame me. You know you want to.)
Jesper Stromblad - In Flames
Miguel Roy - Cryptopsy
Stephen Carpenter - Deftones
Rob Barret - Malevolent Creation
Trey Azagtoth - Morbid Angel

there's more, mostly death metal guitarists though..

ElectricBugaloo
ok, prince doesn't belong in this discussion for 2 reasons:

1) not recent despite just releasing an album and touring

2) can't hold a candle to Frusciante, Navarro or Morello

Darth Jello
the agnew brothers, rikk, frank, and alfie, from-christian death, DI, the adolescents, TSOL, flower lepperds, the ADZ, and others

KMC
Ok the first reason i can understand but how recent is recent?
I beg to differ on the second reason. Once again i'll just say this, watch Rave Un2 the Year 2000, One Night Alone or The Undertaker and you'll understand what i'm on about.

Kate xx

Darth Revan
Tom Morello from Rage

as for bassists, Krist Novoselic

Ikobe
*grins* well, to me few can hold a match to John let alone a candle... and I'm not just saying that because of this although I am highly excited about it... six albums, count 'em, baby...

but anyway... I think Prince is pretty cool. Granted, he won't sing sex songs any more but I can live with that (;

Lenny Kravitz? I don't know if he's one of the best guitarists or whatever but I used to enjoy his music when I was little. *shrugs*

boxofdeath2.0
Kirk Hammet- Metallica
He's one the top 5 guitarists of all time. Listen to his solos from some of Metallica's earlier stuff, it's rediculous

Zack Wylde- Black Label Society

Df02
sorry, by recent i mean Bands that are still around and in their prime, not faded memories of once decent bands...

so sure, some of the old guitar legends may be around, but theyre not in their prime

Mr.French
I dont care about new guitarists. Jimmy Hendrix rockon

Ikobe
so, do you measure talent by the complexity of the music, I'm assuming? I don't mean to start any arguments, but I don't see it that way. the reason why I hold Frusciante in such a light is because of the simplicity of his music. I bet if he wanted to he could set a guitar alight but very simple heart rending riffs and emotive solos, that's the way to go personally.

Ikobe
Well we have a thread for best guitarists of recent years... *shrugs*

Jimi Hendrix, Hillel Slovak... I'm suffering a bit of a hangover so you'll have to finish for me. (: *falls over*

tabby999
Frusciante is more into texturing instead of riffs isn't he? anyway, Dimebag Darrel from Pantera and Mick from Slipknot both shred like madmen

loserib
i agree on the jimmi but you have to add randy roads

KMC
Ok, if Prince apparently doesnt belong in the other thread the he definitely belongs in this one.

Kate xx

Ikobe
I like Prince... ooh, what about Lenny Kravitz. I liked him too.

Bad Boy
Nope! Don't really work like that! Hammet can still write simple riffs and still be good. But the quality of a tune is all down to opinion.

To play something complex and have a cool tune is where the talent is at.

BTW, Kevin Williams from Powell & Kevski is the best guitarist big grin

RebelPhoenix
Carlos Santana

Df02
Steve Vai

amity75
Best dead guitarist? Robert Johnston

Df02
Killswitch Engage guitarist has got some very good riffs, and some nice melodic semi-solo's

Joel Stroetzel

Ikobe
ah...

I just realise how snappy I sounded there. I didn't mean to. (:

KMC
Kravitz is one of the few real rock stars left. Coll guy. Also helps that he's goddamn fine!

Kate xx

Bad Boy
Lol no worries!

Killswitch Engage's guitarist is good yea!

Df02
its kinda hard because theres not as many guitar solo's as there were back in the day, so guitarists cant show off their personal talents as much......

Placebo_fan
Matt Bellamy! He's a genius on guitar, he also designs his own guitars and makes them...at least, i think he does. I'm just letting out info that Sex pistol told me about him. She's practically in love with him.
Matt bellamy, out of Muse, is actually said to be the new Jimi Hendrix. smile

KMC
^Matt Bellamy is an amazing guitarist. Plug in Baby- i love that song. Didnt know he was hailed as the new Hendrix but i've heard that one day ?Muse will be responsible for the new Bohemian Rhapsody.
When they did Feeling Good by Nina Simone- pure genius! One of the few times where i liked the cover maybe slightly more than the original.

Kate xx

Lames.s.
Kirk Hammett is amazing guitarest and Prince is just an amazing musician. I am surprised no one has mentioned John Mayer. Its not my kind of music, but he is pretty good.

Darth Jello
some lesser known wonderful guitarists: Ron Emory, Rikk, Frank, and Alfie Agnew, East Bay Ray (despite being a cock sucking mother ****er), Dick Dale, 6025, Kim Thayil, Doc Corbin Dart, Steve Merchant, Lee Ranoldo

FrothByte
the best guitarist probably is joe satriani. but i like slash the best coz he puts so much emotion into his lead solos.

FrothByte
wats the name of the guitarist from dreamtheatre? he's good. was it patrucci or something. he's so far the best guitarist of recent years.

tabby999
they've been around for ages though

finti
Ritchie Blackmore, Tommy Bolin(dead), Eddie Van Halen, Duane Allman(dead). Jimmy Paige, Jeff Beck.

Bad Boy
Matt Bellamy? Matt Bellamy??? MATT BELLAMY??????

Surely you guys have got to joking! Great songwriter he may be, cool pianist too... but AMAZING GUITARIST????? HELLLLLLLL NO!!!!!!!

If it wasn't for his guitar sfx then people would see how plain his guitar playing is. No disrespect to the guy, he obviously works hard and is a fantastic performer but to label him as the next Hendrix is beyond belief.

I don't mean to sound big-headed or anything but I would wipe the floor with him.

Bad Boy
Hendrix all the way!

eleveninches
Brian May (the guy from Queen)

Bad Boy
He's still alive!

finti
so

ElectricBugaloo
Jimi
Santana
SRV
Clapton
Allman
Robert Johnson

I guess i'm partial to the bluesy guitars

GABRIEL05
WES MONTGOMERY
Django Reinhart

alic88
what bout the guy from the white stripes?

Ikobe
d a v e n a v a r r o

Ikobe
oh right... already mentioned him. *laughs*

finti
wouldnt be considered less recent, dead maybe stick out tongue big grin but that is just my opinion. Kind of dont consider him to be a great guitarist at all

nazgulinthedark
hank williams

loserib
man nobody else seems to know who randy roads is what a shame

total metalhead
You know, I've never really rated Navarro very highly. He's good and all, but when I put him up against the complexity and originality of say, Peter Lindgren, he sounds comparatively average in my opinion.

ElectricBugaloo
Navarro's work in RHCP was disappointing, but live w/ Jane's Addiction, he palys some pretty badass solos

but Frusciante destroys him

el barto
Mine would have to be Pete Townshend, Brian Mays, Eddie Van Halen, and Jimmy Hendrix.

I searched for "Favorite Guitarists" and nothing came up. Just close this if there already a thread like this.

Bad Boy
No one dare mention Kurt Cobain!!!

SeptemberRain
why not?

Df02
cause hes not a good guitarist

room #99
i agree on that he is not..he is so overrated as a guitar player.

Kaleanae
Nobody mentioned The Edge, I like his style blink

1. Jimmi Hendrix
2. Jimmy Page
3. Jeff Beck
4. The Edge (Dave Evans)
5. Laura Almerich
6. Dave Grohl - I like how he plays the guitar, yes
7. Mike Mcready (Pearl Jam)
8. Slash (Guns And Roses) He's one of the best smile
9. Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine)
10. Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction)

11. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
12. Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac)

That's all stick out tongue

Darth Revan
hate to break it to you but Kurt isn't that great of a guitarist. I've been playing for maybe three weeks now and I can play most Nirvana songs without much trouble.

el barto
A guitarist doesn't have to be really good for some one to consider him one of their favorites.

Df02
but he has to be good for them to have a decent reason for him to be their favourite stick out tongue

i started playing guitar again recently....never bothered playing nirvana songs, but i hear they are quite easy messed

Lord_Andres
John Norum
Kee Marcello
Hans Ziller
Andrew Moore

el barto
Johny Ramone the guitarist for The Ramones is one of my favorites (forgot to put him in) and he makes some of the easiest songs. Same with the guitarist for AC/DC.

Darth Revan
yes they are easy

AbexTar
HEY, You guys don't put JIMMY PAGE enough!!! jimmy page is the master of music!!!!!!! smokin'

Df02
and i dont see Steve Vai enough......arguably the best technical guitarist wink

fuct_up_kid
doesn't mean he can't be one of my favourite guitar players does it? cool

fuct_up_kid
see above post wink

Spicy_Mchaggis
kirk hammet is an amazing guitarist. james hetfield is probably one of the worst though. all he knows is metal riffs that sound cool yet kirk is like all over the neck of his guitar. even when kirk is just screwing around warming up he is awesome. but my favorite guitarist of all time is mark tremonti from creed. i know what your thinking, creed sucks and they broke up, but if you listen to the riffs, chords and song styles that he has come up with is truly great and amazing. if you want to hate me for liking creed and linkin park, go for it. but if you try to listen to all types of music and bands with an open mind you will find yourself listening to different genres and bands that you never thought you would. take my word for it. it worked for me!

el barto
I have opened my mind. I just don't need to open it any more stick out tongue

room #99
james hetfield's rythems are amazing. thats his job..making the song sound cool with simple rythem riffs..yet he lays down some great solos.

creed have nice intros to thier songs but when they hit distortion thier songs simply turn into crap

linkin park make me laugh. simple guitar riffs that sound stupid

Deathblow
And sampled simple guitar riffs at that.

Bad Boy
The guitarist from Linkin Park is a total muppet!!!

LeAtHerRFace
Eric Clapton!! smile

hezzy_baby
