I am in a rather unusual position of loving loud rock music and in the even more unusual position of having a daughter that tells ME to turn down the volume rather than the other way round, as you might expect.
I say that if you are playing rock music it HAS to be loud or you don't get the benefit from it.
What do you youngsters think ?

"If it is too loud, you are too old."
Tptmanno1
hehe,
Yea, THere are some subltys that need to be heard when its louder.
golden moon
it doesn't have to be very loud!!
you can use headphones and put it as loud as you want!!!
Mystifier
Head phones damage your hearing though
If you wear 'em a lot like I do
Papaumau
Yeh but....Rock should not be listened to through headphones as that is just another solitary vice ! ( You know what THEY are don't you ? ).
I think that rock is not doing it's job until everybody that is in earshot is enjoying it with you. ( Hard luck for them if they don't like rock I say ) !
Am I a selfish old Bas***d ?
..................................................
NOW....that comment about "if it's too loud you are too old" could actually be taken two ways....
1). If you are playing it too loud you are too old and trying to be young again....
OR...
2). If it is too loud BECAUSE you are too old to appreciate it loud then it follows that older people don't like loud rock....
Which of these meanings are you suggesting....Lil' Backfire

I guess I'm considered a youngster haha so here my opinion:
Loud enough so you can notice all of the music, but not so much that when you turn it off your ears are ringing...

depends on the time and place.
I love rock music and I love playing it on the guitar but I would not inflict it on my neighbours if they dont like it.
Also I'd be pretty pi**ed if they played it too loud at 3 am when I've got to be up at 5 for a 12 hour shift!
golden moon
I am hearin rock right now from my computer and I have it kind of loud...
just now my father came in and told me that it's really loud...
I just laghed and didn't do anything...
he didn't tell me anything else...
finti
"Turn it down you say,
Well all I gotta say to you is
Time and time again i say no
No no no no no
Tell me not to play
Well all I gotta say to
When you tell me not to play
Is say no
No no no no no
So if you ask me
Why I like the way I play it
There's only one thing
I can say to you
I wanna rock, ROCK
I wanna rock, ROCK
I want to rock, ROCK
I wanna rock, ROCK" -Twisted Sister
Df02
Rock should be played at the appropriate level.....
loud
Papaumau
Yeh....
The thing that I have found is that with rock, ( and with dance too ), it is the baseline that matters !
If you have a good and solid baseline you can knock walls down with it !
( The government boffins call it "infra-sound" and if the frequency is just right you can destroy your internal organs with it ! ).
I LOVE Thin Lizzie and I go to listen to a local rock band who cover their stuff, ( No Dice...they are called ) and when the baseline is hard on their track "Cold Sweat" and the Phil Lynott copier gives it big licks you can not only hear the music but you can taste it and feel it too !
THAT'S the way that rock should be enjoyed !
Ringing ears.....so what !
Linkalicious
Atleast Rock sounds good when you play it loud.
Too often you hear these idiots with their less than superior sound systems bumping utter crap rap that causes the little cheezy spoiler on the trunk or their Honda Civic to rattle. I've got a friend that does this, i just listen....anticipating a blown speaker or something so i can laugh my ass off at him for listening to some wanna-be 112 sounding artists sing yet another pussy ass love song.

"You got a bad reputation
That's the word out on the town
It gives a certain fascination
But it can only bring you down
You better turn yourself around
Turn yourself around
Turn it upside down
Turn yourself around" - Thin Lizzy
WindDancer
Well, see that depends on "when and where" do you play loud music. If I'm reading or doing something that requires extreme amount of concentration, I don't want loud music. Whether is Hip-hop, or Rock, or Classical...... loud music is sometimes a nuisance. I love music and I love to crank it up! But if causes other people to get distracted from their important business I don't like it. Is just a matter of common sense and courtesy for others.
Papaumau
I suppose that loud music has to be listened to ???????
Too simplistic ?
What I mean is that if it is in the background and you are not listening to it, it then becomes noise, ( especially if it is coming from next-door and all you can hear is the baseline and the rest is muffled ).
Gotta agree with that !
The answer....knock on the wall and tell im to TURN IT UP !
"YEH...I'm a rocker.....and I'm a roller too baby" - Phil Lynott ( RIP ! )
Darth Revan
Depends... If I'm just listening to music, or listening and doing something that doesn't require a whole lot of concentration, crank it the hell up. But if I'm doing homework or something, I like to have it nice and quiet... There is very little that irritates me more than when people have "background music" playing... Just loud enough that you can hear it but too quiet to be able to pick out the details. That always pisses me off, even if I don't like the song. It's like they can't decide if they want to listen to it or not.
*listens to Nirvana as loud as possible*
lil bitchiness
Yes, it sould be very loud, especially if we're playing Tool or Glassjaw! droolio
finti
nah if it was Tool playing I would switch to something else or turn it off
Darth Revan
