Jury
If you were asked to give up one of your five senses, what sense would that be? Why?

pr1983
sight, because i enjoy the other senses way too much.

BackFire
Smell. It's the most trivial of all the senses.

Jury
Touch. So, I wouldn't be able to feel anything when somebody tried to hurt me. I think so.

SlipknoT
Toutch, that way a wouldnt feel pain

ragesRemorse
I would say taste, because really, if i diddnt have to worry about taste when eating, my life would prbably go a whole lot smoother. I am Glad to have all of my senses though.

nemo
smell, it's not that important, and ours is not well developed like most other animals anyway.

pr1983, u would give up ur sight? i think being blind is really the second or third worst thing that can happen to a person. living in darkness all ur life, it's like being shut in a box that u can never get out of. blind ppl are really brave, the way they carry on with life.

Papaumau
Wouldn't want to lose any of them actually but if I had to it would be "smell" as this is the least essential of the senses.

shellie
out of the choices given i would have to say smell .

i think you left off an important sence though , your 6th sence....

Baylin
I could live without

Sight - Because there's a lot of things in this world I dont like seeing!

I could not live without

Hearing - I would go mad without music and playing the guitar.
Touch - I wouldn't be able to feel to play the guitar or the sun/wind on my face or the gentle caress of loved ones.
Smell - I've seen a lot of beautiful things and smells remind me of them and I helps me to picture them in my head.
Taste - I love my food!

Papaumau
Ahhhhh Shellie..."The Sixth Sense"

As I have said before...that sense has never been proven in a laboratory...BUT...I am sure that it does exist as far too many things have happened - especially between identical twins - for there not to be something there.

Maybe we all have this "sense" to a greater or a lesser degree but wouldn't it be nice to just be able to turn it on and off like a tap ?

Has anybody here had any personal experience of the existence of the sixth sense ?

shellie
im sure everyone has had some kinda of experience with the 6th sence to some degree...

even if you wanna call it your "gut instinct" or your "gut feeling" , everyone has it.....

some just chose to ignore it

Papaumau
The trouble is, Shellie that it is not dependable !

If we depended on "gut instinct" for what we do in life we would be let down more often than we are helped by this instinct.

Maybe THAT'S why people don't use it ?

Df02
lol at people saying "touch, so i cant feel pain" - u miss the point...u always cant fell nething, warmth etc...ud also cause soo much damage to ur body because u wouldnt be able to tell what hurt and what didnt

Smell - can live without that, cant live without the others

Dexx
i'd have to say taste. i can find a hell of a lot more uses for smell than taste

well..this 6th sense will probably never be proven. we've all experienced it i assume..this gut feeling you say about. But it's not something concrete nor something who follows his brain would act on. (if given time to choose)

though i thought the 6th sense is actually women's intuition wink...
never agreed with this, btw stick out tongue

Clovie
neither. erm

Silver Stardust
If any, probably smell, since half the time I can't smell anything anyway due to my allergies.

Papaumau
More from the resident smartass.....

Sense of smell and sense of taste are tied together in many ways so loss of one would probably do damage to the effectiveness of the other.

That is why - of course - that our noses are above our mouths:

When we go to put poisonous or bad food into our mouths we smell it first and often stop at this point. If we don't ( because like Silver Stardust, we have allergies ), then we might taste it before swallowing it and spit it out when it is bad.

That defence-mechanism is a double check when we can both smell AND taste but it is still done if we can taste only.

This makes our sense of smell slightly redundant !

§pearhead
assuming that doesn't work in reverse ^ I'd say get rid of smell, s'the least vital

Papaumau
That's an interesting way to look at it !

But, for to look at it that way you would need to be stuffing something up your nose that would be tested by your mouth, ( taste-buds ) before it got into your stomach....?

Naaaa...even the applicaton of a bit of "snow" up the nasal orifice would not be stopped by it's bad taste.

Dexx
actually..without smell, food tastes a hell of a lot different. there have been tests, where they blind fold people, and cover their nose and make them eat something... in msot cases they didn't know what they were eating...and were quite surprised when they found out.
taste on the other hand, does not affect the smell

Baylin
Not true - if I go by my gut instinct even when it's not really what I want everything always seems to work it's self out right. However if I ignore my gut and go with what I want it usually ends up coming back to haunt me! wink

nemo
men, i think that's ur concience speaking.

what ppl think is sixth sense i think is just our subconcious doing calculations which our concious minds aren't concious of.
what do u guys think of that idea?

Moo Cow
i wouldnt want to give up any of my senses expecially sight or hearing, i wouldnt want to give up touch, because i have this unexplainable need to feel smooth survaces, i dont know why, so dont ask me messed
i wouldnt want to give up taste because i love to eat good tasting food, those of you who wanted to give up the sense of taste have been missing out on really good food.
so that leaves smell, smell helps you taste, but you couldnt taste anything if you had smell but not the ability to taste

hobbit_dude
id say... smell, all of the other r inportant.... but smell also is... what if the house is burning but u dont smell it????

Moo Cow
you could feel the heat from the fire? erm

ragesRemorse
i tend to agree with baylin. Sometimes when i get a certain smell, i am struck with a sudden memory that i re-expeirence all over again. Scent appears to be insignificant because it appears to be non essential to our existence. To me scent can be very gratifying. I could not live without my hearing, that would be insanity to me, a very lonely insanity. Not being able to see would be hell for me, well this and repetition, but thats besides the point. sight is somthing i would need to still feel apart of the world, or atlest to be able to witness the world, for it's beauty and it's ugliness, because sometimes thats whats so beautifull about it. Taste is somthing i would just miss though.

Jury
I didn't like the idea of having the "6th" sense sad ... It is about to ruin my character as a real person once I was prone with these "6th" sense stuff... I wasn't that so sure if I really did see "dead" people. erm .... even I saw some of their kinds... They used to appear in my dreams... they used to sit with me during mealtime ... they were there when I was in school ... everywhere i go .. they were always there. My friends had thought it was freak and everything... but whom should i blame with? ... maybe at that point of my life, as i had realized ... i lack faith. I don't want to remember any of them. Now, it ceased.

Prayer was the answer.

RaventheOnly
isn't smell linked to taste? fear that would suck

Into the Void
I would say to get rid of smell, which would also get rid of taste, so it'd be a double whammy, but it's all good. Without smell/taste, a vagina that stinks like fish, would not actually stink like fish to me, and I'd get all up in that. Sex is the only reason I wouldn't give up touch.

ragesRemorse
yeah the 6th sense was a good movie wasnt it? I mean it made me feel special to when i realized that i wasnt the only one who could see dead people. I was like finally, now maybe people can understand what i go trhough. I kept telling people jimmy hendrix wouldnt leave me alone, he kept naggin me for his magical afterlife guitar, but i think he was just smokin to much after life herb and watchin to much 6th sense. wink whistle yeah yeah jimmy hendrix i mean not that kid who saw dead people and ruined his character, yeah you know the 6th sense kid, you know who i mean right? laughing

Jury
sad i haven't watched that movie... i mean .. i didn't. smile

RaventheOnly
no expression wow.....

ragesRemorse
yeah that was special wasnt it? I will remember that one for a while yes yes yes laughing yes yes yes

Into the Void
Have you experienced it? Touch is the LAST thing I'd wanna give up. I could be blind deaf and dumb with no smell, but if I could touch and still get it up, I'd live with the pain of being basically useless, just for sex. You know Helen Keller was alive just for the porkin'.(I'm gunna get flamed for that, aren't I?)

ragesRemorse
Naw, i mean braille porn sounds kind of sexy.

Jury
Why won't anyone choose to become a deaf? confused

Papaumau
Yeh, I suppose, thinking about it some more, you are right !

As far as I know the only qualities that the taste-buds on the tongue can differentiate are sweet, sour and bitter and the fine flavours are recognised by the brain processing the mixed input from the taste-buds AND the olfactory senses together.

So, I suppose that if we did lose our sense of smell we would then not be able to enjoy tasting our food so much.

Even with that recognised I would still rather hold on to the sight, hearing and touch senses than lose them and sight and hearing are the two most important to me.

shellie
smile 5 reasons for me : babies laughter , birds sing , cats purring , music , sounds of (to be polite) lovemaking

Evy_O
smell

cause...
-sight: the most important for me
-touch: are you people kidding, how could you not touch your loved ones messed
-hearing: I love music sad
-taste: I love food stick out tongue

lucija
I would give up taste...

Jedi Priestess
ditto

Jury
So, no one really wants to give up their Hearing.

IoshIcumIne
i dont think i would give up on any of my senses, but if its a life and death matter, id say taste.

Mr Zero
You folks who think that your sense of smell is "trivial" but would hang on to your sense of taste.

Your taste buds can recognize only four basic "keys" of taste - but your nose can distinguish between around 10,000 different molecules.

Almost ALL of what you think of as "taste" happens in your nose. I'd Give up my taste buds LONG before my sense of smell.

manjaro
if i had to pick id have to boil it down between smell and touch but i ultimately chose touch b-cuz even if i have no sensory receptors i still would be able to feel pressure. and i could totally live with that(providing that i vow never to have sex again............tee hee hee)
