What's this forum like with dialup ?

Papaumau
I ask this question as I just got broadband last week and I have only spent a short time here with dialup.

You see, I have never seen a forum like this before that has so many fantastic siggies. These siggy-piccies are beautiful and all that, but they must make the forum server run much slower by their bandwidth-sapping size I would think.

OK...the smartypants's here will say that the servers can handle that stuff effortlessly, but I bet that the pages here are very slow to download if you only have dialup at 56kbs.

Anybody ?

Raz
I've tried it on dialup, and its not that bad.

The server instructs the browser to cache all the images locally, so they are just downloaded the once, not on every view.

Silver Stardust
I had dialup for ages, and it's not too bad...a lot better than a lot of other sites roll eyes (sarcastic)

yerssot
ask tex stick out tongue

Tptmanno1
or me.....

If you delete your cookies it's a pain in the butt.
But if you keep everythign cached, its not that bad, its just when they change sigs and stuff,
some attachmets are a pain too.

Fire
lol would be a ***** for me
I delete my cookies like every 10 days

Raz
Do we have something to hide? naughty

Fire
no raz for those things I have a different program, which I hardly ever use since I don't care, YES I GOT PORN ON MY COMP Can't handle that TOO BAD for you smile

Tptmanno1
laughing
i dunno why, that was just funny

yerssot
I can, swing it over shifty

Tptmanno1
hey Yerss,
there's a thread in the OTF you'd enjoy,
ya haveta scroll down though....

Fire
lol which one is it TpT?

yerssot
yes, I just reported it

let me state for the record here that I HATE threads being made with me in any way being or being related to the subject

silver_tears
I delete my cookies everytime I close IE droolio

Dexx
i have dial up back home..it's awful

amity75
I don't find dial up to be too slow. I've got broadband at work and can't see that much of a difference on this site.

cornponious
Dude:

If the pages download very slow when you're on dial-up, then it's not the web server, it's your slow-ass connection via dial-up.

You're on broadband, right? The real way to know when the server is overloaded (or just slow all by itself) is to notice the download speed when you are on broadband. If it's fast, then the servers do indeed handle the load effortlessly. If it's slow, then the servers are bogged down, or just slow.

I have a 3 megabit download speed via DSL. I never have a problem bringing up pages on this forum. Their servers are very fast and powerful.

Now if I was on dial-up, I'd probably think "Damn those pesky siggies and avatars! Their bogging down the effing servers!" But it wouldn't be the servers at all, it would be my connection.

See?

cornponious

Jedi Priestess
Ask Fiery Eyes, shes on dial up.........altho she tells me KMC loads pretty fast as compared to my boards. messed and I neva delete my cookies just my temp files.

cornponious
That should have been "They're" instead of "their".

corn

Papaumau
Yeah....I had already sussed that, I just wanted to know if the large siggies made all that much difference !

Anyway... with 576,000 bps rather than 44kbs ( which was my usual connection speed with dialup ), this forum just flies. I am really happy with more than 10X dialup.

BUT.....3 MEGABITS

That's just showin off !

Oh yes...and... for those that like to clear out their TIF cache there is a programme called Widow Washer that will do it automatically, overwrite any nasty stuff AND leave selected cookies alone if you wish.

Dexx
3 megabits?....why...i'd love to have one. And not for surfing the pages...you already get the maximum speed through those with regular cable connections.
3 mbs is for hardcore downloaders smile

Silver Stardust
It's very useful when you've got to upload 15 MB of crap on a regular basis for websites yes and actually, I've got no idea what my broadband speed is...

Papaumau
S.S.....

To find out your actual connection speed just double click on the two wee TVs in your system tray and a box will open that will tell you on the first line what your connection speed is !

Jedi Priestess
mine says 100.0 Mbps eek!

Silver Stardust
12 Mbps...nice and fast big grin

Damn JP! blink

Jedi Priestess
that cant be right is it? On 2wire it gives me the following 1325.5 Kbps
all I know is that when I download stuff around 12MB it takes less than a minute blink

Silver Stardust
I dunno...but that's really flippin' fast if it is...

Jedi Priestess
yeah well it costs me 60 bucks a month too LOL

Silver Stardust
Ours is something like $50 a month...and I'm so glad we finally got it, you have NO idea how hard it is to maintain a website on dialup messed (yes, I want to be a professional webdesigner yes )

Jedi Priestess
ok different site says 1.2 megabits per second I have no idea what that means

actually follow this link and you get tons of tests and for some reason they dont all come out the same blink

http://home.cfl.rr.com/eaa/Bandwidth.htm

Papaumau

Jedi Priestess
im on DSL papa

Silver Stardust
I've got broadband cable yes

Papaumau
If you are on DSL JP then you must have the 1 meg service that I am unable to get. I think that is just about as fast as you can go with copper wire.....( Oh unless you get one of those accelerator progs that compress the data-stream ).

I know one thing...even at half a meg I only took about four or five minutes to download the large part of the Windows 98 SE service pack that I needed.

I cannot image how long it would have taken with dialup....at 44bps

Lucky you SS....

Agent Elrond
I got that too. That's the maximum connection speed. It'll never go that fast. I'm not sure how it works

cornponious
JP, it's saying 100 Mb/s because you've probably got your DSL "modem" plugged into your ethernet port, which is 10/100.

(I use the term "modem" loosely because, technically, cable and DSL do not use modems. The word "modem" is an acronym for "MOdulator - DEModulator. That means it changes the digital data into an analog signal (modulates it), transmists it over analog lines, then the modem on the other end changes the data back to digital (demodulates it). Since cable and DSL signals remain digital the entire time, the data is not modulated nor demodulated. Hence your device is not truly a modem. It's more like a router.)

The other speed you mentioned is your actual speed. It sounds like you've got a 1.5 up/256 down DSL connection.

Copper wire can definitely transmit faster than 1 Mb/s. I've got DSL, and I pay $59.95 / month for my 3Mb/s up/384 Kb/s down connection. And my DSL device is capable of transmitting at speeds up to 8 Mb/s. The good thing about DSL is that your bandwidth is ALL YOURS. It's not shared like cable. I always have 3 Mb/s, regardless of who else around me is online when I am.

And yes, I am a download fiend. wink I enjoy being able to download 1 megabyte every 3.5 seconds.

cornponious

cornponious
Ok, i'm bragging again. big grin

my speed test.

cornponious

Silver Stardust
Took me months of pestering my mother to get it...now I just need to get it on MY computer...big grin

cornponious
That's why phone jacks are called "modular" phone jacks.

cornponious

yerssot
drug addict no

Jedi Priestess
well apparently my connection aint too hot compared to Corns. messed Acutally I used to have wireless where I had an antenna on my house.....now DAMN that was fast!!! AND it was 90 bucks a month messed

this is my test result

Dexx
that is the speed to your router smile

yerssot
you always know how to suck the fun out of a discovery dexx stick out tongue

can you teach me that wink

Jedi Priestess
I myself have noticed that trait about dexxter

yerssot
the romanian kind or Jetster?

Dexx
stick out tongue yeah yeah...how poetic of you yerss. I was just trying to prevent poor jp from telling someone that she has a 100mbps internet speed, if asked. big grin
and now that i look on the previous page...someone had already explained the modulating demodulating issue smile

yerssot
I love it when you talk technical stick out tongue

I'm wondering ol'chap... unis and stuff like that, in romania, do they have a decent connection to the net?

Dexx
well...i'm not at any uni. i'm still in highschool. but i guess some do. depending on the profile. why...you planing on experiencing the east-european education system? stick out tongue

yerssot
just planning on failing as many unis as possible wink

and curiosity, cause ours suck beasants

cornponious
Dude, I already covered that a several posts back.

stick out tongue

cornponious

Dexx
yeah i know...i said it

study study study..that's all i do....yup!

yerssot
of course shifty somehow I don't believe you ...
but it's good I hope?

Dexx
i wouldn't know. i would assume it's acceptable in the better ones.

yerssot
why don't you find out wink

Dexx
well...mainly..because i can't think of a way to do it

yerssot
go to a uni and study there wink

Fire
Good point, but here A) cable's cheaper, B)I'm about the only person in my zone who uses it so I usualy have it all for myself

but when I move out on my own I'm so getting DSL

Fire
I'd like a T-3 connection; but I doubt I'll ever get that, my dad has it at work, should go and install Kazaa on a comp in a tiny little office there somewhere.

cornponious
Let's not forget about Internet 2. Didn't they test it by transferring a 40 Gig file in a matter of a few seconds?

That would be sweeeeet.

botankus
Well, for starters, he had his own message board and was constantly trying to get people to go to his.

He seemed like a guy who tested a lot of waters (message boards) to try to interact (which he did well) and then get them over to his board.

Jedi Priestess
Oh so he was just chumming the KMC waters for bodies?

botankus
I believe so. I was even tricked once and was lured to his lair.

Jedi Priestess
LMAO Lair! laughing out loud
