The best book I've ever come across would be "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn. It put so many aspects of life into a new light. It examined human history and put everything from evolution to education into Lehman's terms. It really broke down culture and societies to a point where you step back and wonder why you really need a microwave.
Wonderful book and I highly, highly recommend it.
Also, for all the religious overtones, "The Celestine Prophecy" is just amazing. It was like reading a spiritual version of Indiana Jones.
I'm also a big fan of Edward Abbey's "The Monkeywrench Gang." That book made me want to drink Schlitz and hike for the rest of my life.
