Arahael
Is anybody elese here in to Classic Rock? Some of my favorite bands are Boston, The Who, Led Zepplin, and Styx. Anybody else?

Darth Revan
Ehh kinda... I like the Beatles and some surf-guitar stuff like Dick Dale yes

Arahael
Yeah, The Beatles are pretty cool too.

finti
Deep Purple, Black Sabbath if we can consider the latter as clasical rock.......yes we can

Evil Dead
Creedence Clearwater Revival.............

'nough said.

ElectricBugaloo
Styx are not classic rock. this pisses me off when people think that 80s bands belong in the classic rock category.

finti
ehh consider Styx only had 3 albums in the 80`s and 9 in the 70`s I wouldnt have considered them an 80`s band

ElectricBugaloo
they wre most popular in the 80s so i consider them an 80s band. there's also the fact that they suck, but i won't get into that.

Arahael
Riiiiiiight

Kaleanae
I like Led Zeppelin stick out tongue

And a lot, but a lot of bands from the 70s, only rock,

No disco messed

SlipknoT
Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Led Zepplin, Alice Cooper, The Who

ragesRemorse
Classic rock is the best kind of rock.

Darth Revan
Oh, forgot Sabbath and Alice Cooper

RR>classic rock is overrated...

SlipknoT
Some of it is

Darth Revan
Well it's not bad by any means, it's just that I'm sick of people going around saying "Ohhh Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd! All new music is terrible! You teeny boppers need to hear some real music!"

Deathblow
i'm not sure how many of these would be considered classic but here goes

The Rolling Stones
The Who
Led Zeppelin
T-Rex
Pink Floyd
Deep Purple
The Clash
Pixies (are they old enough to be called 'classic' yet?)

ragesRemorse
no classic rock is not overated. It was an age of pioneering new sounds, and not being scared to break new bounderies. Classic rck is a ver diverse world of sounds. Yeah there is great bands today, great artists. Some of which is very original and innovative, but still lacks the ability to have a presence on people that classic did. Most Modern rock sounds the same though. In the age of commercialism and cooperate rock, many bands and artists scurry to latch on to the present trend or tend to copy popular music. Again this isnt becaus of lack of talent out there, but because of the death of record companies.

Darth Revan
The thing is though, a lot of old bands were just as commercial, if not MORE so, as many bands we have today. Tool and APC, for example, are much less commercialized than say, the Stones were. You have to remember that for the twenty or so true classics that people think of when you say "classic rock", there were thousands of shitty bands that everyone's since forgotten.

And modern rock does NOT all sound the same. Sure there's plenty of crap that does all sound the same, but there are also a good number of incredibly talented musicians who have a sound all their own. Just like you can instantly recognize a Who song, you can also instantly recognize a System of a Down or RATM song... It's really not much different now than it was then.

MC Mike
I like to listen to classic rock when I have nothing else to listen to. It's not because it is my last choice, it's just something I can do when I have nothing else.

slasherpunk18
Bands like Led Zeppelin and The Who are severely overrated, and I personally think that the stones sucked.

ElectricBugaloo
the most popular band in teh world (The Beatles) were way less commercialized than any band on a major label today; just because the record labels weren't out ONLY to make a buck. They were owned not by corporations, but by music lovers.

I agree with LZ being overrated, but The Who is really underrated. They were the best hard rock band of the time (assuming Sabbath is in the Metal genre). The Stones are overrated, but were nevertheless a great band. Sympathy for The Devil remains one of the best rock songs ever.

And this thread has gone this long without anyone mentioning Chicago? for Shame.

slasherpunk18
I love punk but Sabbath kicked some serious ass.

ElectricBugaloo
if you only concentrate on one type of music, you are missing out on a majority of the good music out there, slasherpunk.

slasherpunk18
I never said that I listen to only one type of music,I just love punk.

el_barto
Read the signature

Arahael
You're going to bash good music like the Stones and Led Zepplin and then praise Chicago?
Suddenly feeling nauseous....

Darth Revan
He wasn't bashing Led Zep and the Stones, in fact he said the Stones were a great band if you look closely. Saying a band is overrated does not mean it's bad. And I agree with him that LZ and the Stones are overrated.

slasherpunk18
I'm so sick of hearing about the god damn stones.

Arahael
I haven't heard anything about them in a long time.

el_barto
You are now officaily my best friend eek!!

Arahael
Going to hurl....

el_barto
Will you stop it. He may be saying LZ is overated but he's not saying they suck. Overated DOES NOT mean that they suck, it means that they are given to much credit.

Arahael
Oh I'm not getting sick over that. People are entitled to their opinions. I can't stand Chicago. I mean come on!

el_barto
Just checking. Havnt heard Chicago though so I dont have an opinion stick out tongue

Arahael
They're not as awful as some other groups, but they just rub me the wrong way.

finti
how you manage to not hear chicago, they are frequently played on whatever radiostation there is........almost

el_barto
I dont listen to the radio stick out tongue

moonwalker741
led zepplin and alice cooper
rock

Linkalicious
seriously. how can anyone say that the Rollingstones and Led Zepplin are overrated?

I've got like....all of their CDs and copies of their earlier work on Vinyl. They are two of the greatest bands ever, with COUNTLESS hits. The Rolling Stones 40 Licks CD and Led Zepplin's How the West Was Won are both multi CD albums that contain some of the best music EVER recorded. There are over 25 hits on 40 Licks alone. I love The Who. The Guess Who are good as well.

I like pretty much everything everyone else has named, but I'll add a little bit here.

REO Speedwagon's good. I like Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffett's style of caribbean rock is a nice change in atmosphere...though he's starting to sound country on his newest release.

Def Leopard and Van Halen are considered classics though they aren't THAT old quite yet. Jackson Brown, the Eagles, and I guess you could consider Fleetwood Mac classic as well. All great bands that play great music.

I love listening to a little Heart, and Joe Walsh's solo work was great.

eezy45
Led Zeppelin rock

Darth Revan
Because... they are overrated. There are musicians today that are just as good if not better than the guys in the Stones. Maynard James Keenan is a significantly better vocalist than Mick Jagger.

finti
I agree on RS, LZ is awesome though Stones nah made the same record 13 times since 1973

Linkalicious
hmmmm....true. But I wouldn't call them overrated. They have more #1 hit songs than most modern artists have top 20 songs.

Darth Revan
A band's success in the mainstream is quite often no indication of their actual talent... How many #1 hits have talentless, crap singers like Britney and N'Sync had?

§nakehead
Frank Zappa, The Doors are the best classic rock even though I am more of a Metalica, Creed fan

slasherpunk18
Good point.

Arahael
Oh my gosh, I love you. big grin

Lady_Moon
I could not love classic rock, and classic rock ONLY. Yeah, sure....there are some good bands out there with some great songs, all of which 'fall' under the catagory of classic rock. But not all of it is great.....

And there are more genre's out there that have rock undertones and basis which give whole new meaning to the word "rock." You can find some great stuff with the classics....

But I wouldn't and do not listen to it ONLY.

xoroddickfanxo
Omg i love all classic rock...led zeppelin is my favorite though...i also like kiss, boston, deep purple, jimi hendrix, guns n roses, the who..and many more...i have been to see the who, boston and deep purple....please IM me if u wanna chat bout music or if u like classic rock....my sn is [email protected]

el_barto
Ugh, Kiss sick

PrefectRonnykin
kiss is g to the hetto no expression

Arahael
So, what's wrong with that?

Korri
are you kidding!! i worship the ground they spit on!

Arahael
Sweetness! You can be my friend too! big grin

ElectricBugaloo
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Sabbath
Rolling Stones
CCR
Allman Brothers
Lynyrd Skynyrd

man, i listened to nothing but classic rock a couple days back, it was pretty cool

Arahael
Those bands all rule!

ElectricBugaloo
damn, i forgot Chicago, Crosby Stills and Nash (and Young), The Doors, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Clapton, Hendrix, Foghat, Joe Walsh, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Queen, Santana, Tom PEtty (eh, maybe he's classic rock...kinda new for it), War and ZZ Top

Arahael
Yes! I totally agree. big grin

finti
great list of bands there ElectricBugaloo, never cared for CCR myself though. The rest pure magic

Arahael
Oh, yeah. Kudos to you!

bardock
i like the stones chicago and queen.but not zepplin floyd or the doors.

finti
never cared for Stones either, missed that one last time around

Arahael
I have to say that Led Zepplin is probably my most favorite band of all time, ever!

Arahael
yeah

Arahael
hehe

finti
fair enough

Arahael
totally

ElectricBugaloo
you know, i used to think that the Stones weren't that good, but then I started listening to their stuff more, and they have many good songs.

Drifter101
hmm you do know that classic rock doesnt have to be just bands, and........hmmm........ pshhh not a peep about jimi hendrix here, he is classic rock, hes played on the classic rock stations, making it classic rock and yet no mention of him..........damn, and im a pink floyd, led zeppelin person along w/ Jimi Hendrix

ElectricBugaloo

Arahael
OK

§â®äµ
yes, i love classic rock..queen, styx, the who, are some of my favorites...

Arahael
Cool, go vote in the new poll I made about it.

Arahael
hehehe

ElectricBugaloo
Arahael, it gets annoying when you just post one thing totally unrelated to the thread to bump it and promote yourself

Arahael
Have you read the thread I dedicated to myself. It basically explains that I'm self-centered, and I know it. I've been bumping that one all day. big grin

ElectricBugaloo
i don't venture outside of the music forum all that much, and all I know is that your constant attention seeking is really ****ing annoying for those of us actually trying to talk about music

Arahael
Hey, I can talk about serious music too, if you bother to read any of my posts

ElectricBugaloo
all i've ever seen is "LED ZEPPELIN ROCKS!!!!"

and one word bumps to keep your threads afloat. not exactly serious music discussion.

Arahael
Well, Led Zeppelin does rock. By the way if you haven't noticed I post one word most of the time on purpose. stick out tongue

ElectricBugaloo
if you like led zeppelin, perhaps you should listen to some blues music to see where they took most of their songs from.

Arahael
Do you mean got inspiration from, or stole ideas from? If you're going to go on another Zeppelin v. Who tirade, then I don't want to hear it because they are equal in my eyes.

ElectricBugaloo
well i guess it's inspiration if you mean taking guitar riffs note from note from such influential artists like Muddy Waters without so much as acknowledging them is inspiration. I call that theft.

finti
EB you really exaggerate about LZ a bit here, instead of just accusing them come up with examples to back up your argument

ElectricBugaloo
http://www.furious.com/perfect/jimmypage.html

ElectricBugaloo
# "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - A folk song by Anne Bredon, this was originally credited as "traditional, arranged by Jimmy Page," then "words and music by Jimmy Page," and then, following legal action, "Bredon/Page/Plant."

# "Black Mountain Side" - uncredited version of a traditional folk tune previously recorded by Bert Jansch.

# "Bring It On Home" - the first section is an uncredited cover of the Willie Dixon tune (as performed by the imposter Sonny Boy Williamson).

# "Communication Breakdown" - apparently derived from Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Breakdown."

# "Custard Pie" - uncredited cover of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down," with lyrics from Sleepy John Estes's "Drop Down Daddy."

# "Dazed And Confused" - uncredited cover of the Jake Holmes song (see The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes).

# "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" - uncredited version of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down."

# "How Many More Times" - Part one is an uncredited cover of the Howlin' Wolf song (available on numerous compilations). Part two is an uncredited cover of Albert King's "The Hunter."

# "In My Time Of Dying" - uncredited cover of the traditional song (as heard on Bob Dylan's debut).

# "The Lemon Song" - uncredited cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" - Wolf's publisher sued Zeppelin in the early 70's and settled out of court.

# "Moby Dick" - written and first recorded by Sleepy John Estes under the title "The Girl I Love," and later covered by Bobby Parker.

# "Nobody's Fault But Mine" - uncredited cover of the Blind Willie Johnson blues.

# "Since I've Been Lovin' You" - lyrics are the same as Moby Grape's "Never," though the music isn't similar.

# "Stairway To Heaven" - the main guitar line is apparently from "Taurus" by Spirit.

# "White Summer" - uncredited cover of Davey Graham's "She Moved Through The Fair."
# "Whole Lotta Love" - lyrics are from the Willie Dixon blues "You Need Love."

finti
To be honost I have seen a similare list like this one before with some of the same songs as mentioned above. Some of the songs bear resemblants thats true but some of them doesnt bear any resemblence at all.
Willie Dixon got "out of court" settlements for You Need Love - Whole Lotta Love, after that it seemed like a lot of similaraties between Zeppelin songs and other songs popped up all of a sudden looking for getting some bucks for copyright thingie

ElectricBugaloo
the ones i listed are only the ones that are generally accepted as being stolen. THere are many more where riffs were ripped off, etc, but i didn't feel like searching out all of those, only the ones where the main parts of the song were clearly not written by Page/Plant and yet were credited to them

finti
it is mostly Page that theyre after, dont get me wrong I see what youpost and stuff. Thing is it aint news it is old stuff and I heard both good arguments for and against which really leave it all up to what you wanna believe yourself. Me I think he was influenced and borrowed/created similare riffs and stuff but no plagiary artist as some wants him to be. Remember LZ was so huge that someone always wanna piss on their fortune

ElectricBugaloo
actually if you read it, you'll see that they stole both lyrics and guitar riffs. Bonham and JohnPaul Jones are probably the only ones who are inoocent.

finti
Still dont believe everything I read though

Arahael
Yeah, no kidding.

ElectricBugaloo
well you can listen to the songs and then the originals, then make your own opinion. or read some of the books written on this issue.

Arahael
Yeah, I 'll get on that. roll eyes (sarcastic)

ElectricBugaloo
yeah, wouldn't want you to actually listen to some new msuic, would we?

finti
exactly what I did. Well it wasnt boosk exactly it was more of the kind of essays. Even seen some documentary issue on the matteer too.

ElectricBugaloo
there are some books written on theft from blues musicians and led zeppeln figures prominently in that.

finti
thing is it aint all reliable facts though

Arahael
I actually listen to comtemporary music as well as older stuff, so don't be so quick to judge. What the f**k?

ElectricBugaloo
well you obviously completely missed the point of my post.

You said sarcastically that you would get right on listening to the other artists that wrote Led Zeppelin's songs, and then i sarcastically said that we wouldn't want you listening to new music. Not new as in recently made, but new as in stuff you had not heard before.

Arahael
I don't have a problem with that. It's just that I'm tired of you always trashing on people. Not just in this thread, but others as well. Lay off for a while. mad

Arahael
yeah!

finti
Arahael thing is we like constructive replies in the music forum not the kind of "they suck" and "yeah"

Arahael
Maybe you should be saying that to the people who like to start shit with me, because I'm just finishing it.

Arahael
take that!

plenTpak52
I'm with ElectricBugaloo on this one

Arahael
On what?

plenTpak52
that page stole music

finti
Maybe you should concentrate a bit more on replys regarding the topic

Arahael
Why are you blaming me? I stay on topic until someone else feels the need to trash my opinion or say something rude about me.

ElectricBugaloo
yep, always on topic...

Arahael
I already explained that those were only there to boost this thread for a while.

Darth Revan
Look, if you don't want to be in the occasional argument or debate, get off the internet. And also, I don't see what's wrong with listening to the songs he's listed, maybe then you could even prove him wrong... There is never anything wrong with doing a little research. If you don't, you just come across as being totally ignorant on the issue, like a Creationist who makes absurd claims about evolution...

ElectricBugaloo
anyways...how 'bout them beatles, eh?

finti
Revolver is my fav album by them

ElectricBugaloo
i like Abbey Road. But you can't go wrong with Revolver, Rubber Soul or Abbey Road.

finti
I totally agree with you EB, great albums all of them. But if I had to pick.......

ElectricBugaloo
yeah, but to me it's like picking 1a, 1b or 1c. it doesn't really matter, it just kind of depends on my mood at the time

Arahael
Alright, look I'm tired of having to defend myself against ******* types like yourself. I manage to resepct everyone else's rigoddamndiculous opinions, so I think you can do the same for me. You might not realize it, but I am just as in to music as you are. You don't have to be so freaking serious about it all the time. Pull the stick out of your ass and learn to take a joke sometime. mad

Arahael
So there. stick out tongue

ElectricBugaloo
anyways, back to the real conversation.

I'm going to say this even though i'll probably get flamed:

The White Album is overrated

Arahael
If you don't want to deal with me, then I guess I've won.

ElectricBugaloo
no, you just say the same things over and over which amount to "I don't know what I'm talking about"

Arahael
Did you bother to read my second to last post?

ElectricBugaloo
you're so easy...

Arahael
what do you mean?

plenTpak52
For Christ's sake will you just let it go? Stop being so childish and get over it!

ElectricBugaloo
all i have to say is "led zeppelin sucks" and you'll go off on a tangental rant that almost has something to do with music.

finti
so...............about classic rock I wish they would do a dvd of filmed material from Deep Purple like the one they did with Zeppelin.

ElectricBugaloo
i bought my dad that zep DVD thing, but i still haven't watched it.

finti
The second cd is the best by far

Arahael
The reason I got mad was becuase you have been an ******* to me ever since I started this thread. If you had someone always trashing whatever you posted, even after you explained yourself, then I think I am justified in being pissed at you.

ElectricBugaloo
I wanted to go see that thing with The Who live that they had in theateres because they put on such a kickin show

Arahael
If you don't want to talk to me about it, and you'd rather act like a child then go right ahead.

ElectricBugaloo
they had one for Elvis and Phish also. Though I think that if it was on DVD it would be better. I think there was a Hendrix one also, but I can't be sure.

Arahael
Alright, whatever. What the f**k?

finti
Actually Swedish Television found a "lost" tape of a Hendrix concert which they have release on dvd now. It is supposed to be outstanding

ElectricBugaloo
i heard about them finding it, but i don't think they've released it on DVD yet, last i heard they were still seeing if they had the legal right to show it.

Arahael
Riiiiiiiiiiight.

finti
Well from what I saw on Swedish Tv theyre gonna release it

ElectricBugaloo
cool

i've been listening to a lot of the more forgotten classic rock songs lately.

Radar Love, Space Cowboy, etc

Arahael
How is Space Cowboy forgotten? Alot of people know that song.

finti
Still is a song you dont hear to often on the radio and Radar Love , my friend have a cd from Golden Earring. Their unplugged version of their greatest hits, pretty cool stuff

ElectricBugaloo
i don't mean forgotten like it's never on teh radio, i mean forgotten like people don't talk about it when they are talking about classic rock.

like five man elecrical band's "Signs". Or Sugarloaf's "Green Eyed Lady". But i'm not going for stuff like Bloodrock's "DOA" which most people haven't heard of.

Arahael
oh, alright

eggmayo
i like led zepellin, AC/DC, Sabbath, Guns and Roses, KISS, Lynard Skynard, Pink floyd, and Van Halen - there just the ones that could easily be dexcribed as classic rock

ElectricBugaloo
Guns and Roses aren't classic rock. Van Halen is borderline

Turbo-Cajun
Led Zep "When the Levee Breaks" is one of the damn coolest songs in the world...I love it, im listening to it right now

eggmayo
basically... i would say any reasonably old rock band that sold many records are classics...

finti
what is old then?
