Does anyone know how to get the original Star Wars books? I presume that there's 10 books in all and I was wondering if you can aquire them from anywhere. confused

yerssot
talking about the ones from 1977?

greenlightsabre
Do you mean that the books came out in 1977 or the film? I mean the books, if there are any.

ToMacco
I'm completley confused here.

yerssot
the inevitable return of To's remarks stick out tongue

greenlightsabre
All I'm asking is that, as there are 10 chapters to the Star Wars saga, is there a range of original books that ever came out ie. Chapter One: The Phantom Menace, Chapter Four: A New Hope etc. I've been interested since Star Wars first came out, and the story line at the beginning began CHAPTER IV - A NEW HOPE blah, blah, blah. smokin'

Ushgarak
There aren't ten parts; there never were. There was at first nne and three spin-offs, long since reduced to six, two of which haven't even been finished yet!

All the novelisations are still generally available, I think.

LanceWindu
I'm sure you can find scripments of the original nine out there somewhere. They'd be on teh internet most likely. But those are way different than the movies. Leia isn't even Luke's sister in them. And Luke would be Luke Starkiller.

greenlightsabre
I always thought that there were ten chapters, and out of those, George Lucas picked the best three films to be made as a trilogy. I remember him on a saturday morning childrens show (Something like Swap Shop, Tiswas or the one with Mike Read the DJ) saying that he only did the trilogy because nothing really happened in the others! He also said that about a chapter inbetween TESB and ROTJ i think. Does anyone else recall any of this?

yerssot
that's then the first thing I heared!

Ushgarak
No, and none of it is true, as numerous interviews with GL will show, and there are NO plotlines for 7 8 and 9 available as GL only had the very barest outlines of what thge stories might possibly have been, none of which is relevant any more.

LanceWindu
The chapter between ESB and ROTJ might be Shadows of the Empire. He probably told the story to the writer of the book. Then again I think you mistook what GL said.

greenlightsabre
...you could be right, I could have been mistaken as it was a long, long time ago, but I still haven't got any info on the original books, IF there were any. I've scanned through endless Star Wars sites about the origins of the stories and characters, but each one is different. I've read one about there being 10 chapters, one about Luke Starkiller, which on the fourth attempt of a story became Star Wars (hence the Chapter IV) and another saying that GL writes them as he goes along.
I'm just intrigued by these books, if there are any, and would love to get hold of them and I am sorry if I'm boring anyone to death with this. rolling on floor laughing

finti
I rememebr and interview in the paper when they were in Norway(Finse) for the Hoth scenes in ESB. There GL said that he had a story that went through nine episodes and r2d2 and 3po were the only ones to be in all nine. Later he ditched the plans of chapters 7, 8 and 9.

Bottom line: 9 episodes, and this comming from the MAN himself.

Obi-wan Kenobi
They are going to make 7, 8, and 9?

yerssot
no, it's dropped a while ago

Obi-wan Kenobi
Rats.

yerssot
not really, what would be the story? it still has to be connected with the OT

ToMacco
They'll make 3 more. It will give Lucas another billion dollars.

yerssot
and again: he's not greedy

ToMacco
I don't feel like arguing.

Besides, I don't think it's necissarly greed. But if you had the opportunity to make another fortune, wouldn't you do it?

yerssot
you know why he made all that money with toys etc.?

From the VERY start he wanted to make the movie WITHOUT Fox budding in...
Now in 1999 he made TPM ALL ALONE, using only HIS money, the same thing he did with AOTC!
How are you going to do that without money???

ToMacco
What? confused

What in God's name. . .

yerssot
Halleluja big grin

I just gave you the reason WHY he has alot of money

ToMacco
Well, my point is he can make truckloads of money with the movies, however he started.

I have little doubt he won't make (or authorize the making) of three more. I don't care what he has said about it before.

yerssot
because ....?

ToMacco
I don't know. If his original vision was to do nine, I think he'll want to do them all. And the money thing.

yerssot
that money thing is utterly nonesense!

ToMacco
yers, you wouldn't make a billion dollars if you had the opportunity?

yerssot
how come there are no TV-series?

jedi fernando
there never has been scripments for 9 starwars chapters
actually the 1977 starwars movie didnt have "chapter IV" at the beginning, the 9 chaptes where kind of a vague idea gl had of how he wanted to create his universe, after making the first one he had the money to do the next and so on. remember he didnt do any movie after the indiana jones series which he didnt even direct, he only produced movies acter ROTJ. If it took him 20 years to do the prequels (well he waited for technology also) which take him to do 3 years each, that means 9 constant working years spent in prequels.
if i work one month straight i wanna rest 3 months. look at him he is kinda old he is pretty fulfilled with his universe he is a billioner he has proven that he is the master of creating movie sagas and holding box office records. what else would he want?
he aint gonna spend another 10 years making movies i dont think so. and i dont think anyone else will want to take his empire and make more movies for the respect everyone in the business has for him. after 2005 no more starwars my friends. just expanded universe i believe.

Ushgarak
Yes, GL will be completely Star Warsed out. Sod the money. When you FINISH a story it takes more than money to make you want to go back.

Bantha Fodder
Originally Lucas outlined 9 chapters to the Star Wars saga. The first three were done to establish a background to A New Hope, so that it would be easier to write and direct. The last three were mere scribbles, Lucas never finished them in any significant way.

When Lucas decided on filming the first three chapters, he granted permission to authors to publish novels about the post ROTJ Star Wars universe. He has no plans for Star Wars beyond chapters 1-6.

Remember, Lucas is an old man and so are many of the people who he works on Star Wars with. And he hasn't exactly been aging like wine...ever since ROTJ the his films have sucked. One can only imagine how horrible chapters 7-9 would be if he actually filmed them. Undoubtedly he would create a race more cutesy and ridiculous than the Ewoks, represented by a character more obnoxious than Jar Jar Binks. Need I say more?

"Meesa not writin' the lassa chaptas, meesa too old to be playin' directa and stuffa lika thata. Meesa go ka ka, and poo poo, and pee pee all ova meesa selfa!"

yerssot
it's not that Jar Jar "destroyed" the movie!

Bantha Fodder
No, but his character ruined an already mediocre movie. In 80% of the scenes with Jar Jar, there was absolutely no reason for the character to be in them. There is no reason for Qui-Gon to let Jar Jar follow him all over Tattoine, except that ILM created a CGI character, and Lucas was going to use that character, damn it!

Without Jar Jar, TPM would have been far better movie, there is no denying that. And without Jar Jar, Lucas would have had extra time to be used towards developing other characters and expanding some of the important scenes that lacked focus.

Too bad about Jar Jar being in AOTC...I guess that character is going to drag down that movie as well. Hopefully reports about him being in only a few scenes are correct, but I'm not optimistic.

yerssot
The word "life-dept" doesn't ring a bell, perhaps?

That's good, I deny it

You know how much Jar Jar costed? 100 000$ and we are talking about a multi-million $ movie!
and almost everything was done with computer-aid, NO ONE (excapt you apperently) had comments on that one!
I am VERY picky on cgi but I haven't made ANY comment about his apperance that cgi-point of view was bad (there are only TWO scenes that weren't that good)

If you even TRIED to get info about AOTC you would know that his role in AOTC is small but tremandous important!

Ushgarak
I am not necessarily disagreeing with you, yerss, but "life-dept" doesn't ring any bells with me...

Oh, hang on. Life debt! I just got that. Ahem. Well, what I think BF means was that there was no reason for Jar-Jar in a FILMMAKING sense, not a PLOT sense. Obviously, plot-wise they can make up any reason at all. BF was questioning the point of having him in the story in the first place.

Mind you, this is one of those things that is better looked at in the context in the trilogy as a whole.

Personally I didn't mind Jar-Jar at all.

yerssot
you know I am a rebel, even when writing wink

you can alter a story so that even the queen, OB1 or let's say Palpatine wasn't necessary

Bantha Fodder
Odd that you assume I don't know the rumors of Jar Jar's appearances in AOTC. But of course when a person is wrong about something, they sometimes resort to personal insults, as you are doing. I'll say this much, Jar Jar's role doesn't have to be important, ANYONE could do what he is rumored to do in the Senate. Even a Wookie to do it! Although it is nice that Lucas makes Jar Jar indirectly responsible for the creation of a dictatorial Republic. Ha! Still, if Lucas really wanted to do justice to the character of Jar Jar, then at the assassination attempt of Senator Amidala, Jar Jar would die a slow, bloody death. It would be great if a ship was damaged and fell on top of Jar Jar, then Obi Wan force lifted the ship to reveal a bloody mess of Gungan carnage that used to be Jar Jar Binks. He could save an ear for memories sake!

Yerssot, you are clearly biased in favor of Jar Jar for some reason. Sometimes fans invest too much personal emotion into a series, so much that they lose sense of the quality of the material. It seems that you have fallen into such a trap. The character of Jar Jar Binks has few redeeming qualities, and ANY person with an objective mind would conclude the obvious: Jar Jar Binks' character sucks. It is a horrific use of CGI in a movie, with terrible lines, bad humor, and NO PURPOSE, other than to annoy the audience and make them want to leave the theater.

Lucas could have written a much better script for TPM if he had left Jar Jar Binks out of it. Any reasonable person can see that, why can't you?

yerssot
laughing out loud stop it man! You are killing me! laughing out loud shouldn't this be in the humour section now?

So I can safely assume you haven't read all the spoilers

Have you heared a Wookie speak Basic?

Like GL himself said; some hate him but even they will feel sorry for him because he did something he knew everyone would have loved him for that action

Here is another proof that you don't read spoilers

Can I start bashing you? Because apperently even YOU can't write English roll eyes (sarcastic) so if I were you, I would stop making those comments
I like Jar Jar, he's a Star Wars character, his cgi was good, sometimes exellent, but I don't like his "jokes" and his "attitude" wich is my right to tell, but I don't nag or bash about it

And where does that lead you with your Jar Jar nagging?

seeming and the truth are two different things

From your point of view, terrible lines? your opinion, mine is:no
bad humor? for me, yes, could be better. But to tell you that he has no purpose? I strongly disagree!

Making me unreasonable? Because I defend a character? Why not bash Greedo a bit? You couldn't understand what he was saying too...
Believe it or not, Lucas had EpII and III in mind when he wrote Episode I, and you claim to know his role in EpII so; go figure

Ushgarak
That WAS a fairly broad comment there, BF. I'm a reasonable person and I had no objection to Jar-Jar who, incidentally, was very popular with the kids that the movie was aimed at (which may I remind you is who GL SAYS the films are aimed at).

I thought he had a rather Daffy Duck-like quality to him.

yerssot
and we all know how much you love Daffy Duck...
