hey got a prob......my girlfriend hates lotr and she makes fun of me because of it......calls me freak and loser and stuff....she dosn't like lotr at all.......and as you know i LOVE lotr.

is this a reason to break up?.....i'm very close to doing so but i want to do it for the right reasons.......what do you think....??

Uh, you and your girlfriend having different tastes and interest is ALREADY a problem to some extent. You may love each other on some part of your relationship but it is inevitable that you will have some arguments and misunderstanding over each other's interests. But I suppose it could be solved (or at least prevented from getting worse) to some extent; don't talk about it, don't insult each others tastes and favorites, etc. HOWEVER, your girlfriend calling you a freak and a loser because of your love for LOTR even though she knows that it is one of the greatest things in your life is wwwaaaaayyy out of line. Even if it's a joke...well, it's not funny. Having a relationship with somebody should be a very special moment in your life. You have a companion, a best friend, a listener, a supporter. A girlfriend or a boyfriend should be there next to you to give you moral support and other things, but I'm afraid your girlfriend does the opposite thing. If I have a boyfriend, I'll expect that he will be the LAST person to insult me and make fun of what I consider is my inspiration and one of the best things that came to my life. I'll prefer being mocked by hundreds of strangers than to be insulted by one of the most important persons in my life.

You still have the last decision though. I can't tell you to dump her right away. I am not certain how much you love her and what's more important to you, your girlfriend, or Middle-earth.

i would do whatever you think best, but you deserve better SMod, you really do



why dont you talk to her. tell her that she can have her own opinion of LOTR, but not to cut you down because of something that is an important part of your life. tell her you can disagree, but to worry about other things when your together and focus on things you both like.

but, if you have other problems too, or hte talking doesnt help tell her that you dont think it's going to work out

I agree with pip-foot and shadowy. I don't see why you went out with her in the first place if she doesn't like LOTR, but that's just me. If I had a boyfriend who didn't like LOTR, well, actually, he wouldn't be my boyfriend haha. I'd NEVER go out with anyone who insults LOTR, like all the guys at my school do. I have only two friends who are LOTR fans (guy friends, that is. I have about two other friends who like LOTR who are girls), but I couldn't imagine going out with them. We're just friends. But if your girlfriend calls you a freak and a loser just for being passionate for something other than her, I'd dump her. This is just my opinion, though. I'd go with what you think you should do. If you really love her and care about her more than LOTR (I'm not sure that's even possible...which is why I don't have a boyfriend at the moment haha), then stay with her. But calling you a freak and a loser is just wrong. Even if she doesn't like LOTR, it doesn't mean that she should insult you like that. What you like is what you like and you can't help it. She should just accept it and get over it. End of story.

And I get teased and insulted and called a freak and crap all the time by tons of people at my school. They do it because I like LOTR Good thing I'm not one of those preppy popular people who care about what everyone thinks...If I did, I wouldn't like LOTR, which is why I'm not one of them haha. If someone calls you names and insults you and stuff just for liking LOTR, forget them. I do. Just ignore them. They don't know what they're missing. They are the real losers and freaks. its not the fact that she doesn't like lotr's that bothers me (well it does but thats not the point!) its that she's calling you a freak and a loser, now thats a reason to break up with someone (unless shes joking when she says it... is she?)

Yeah, if she's joking, just ask her to stop, you know. But if she's not, I'd dump her....But it's all up to you, Smod. We can't control your decisions, but if she's insulting you for liking LOTR, eh, she's not worth it. It would be ok (not for me, but for you, sure, if you don't mind it) if she doesn't like LOTR and DOESN'T insult you or anything about it. But she shouldn't be making such a big deal about it. Your girlfriend's supposed to accept what you like and not call you a loser or freak for liking it. It's just not right.

Just to clarify, (coz I read my post again and it sounded somewhat a little condemnatory). I'm not saying that to have an ideal relationship, both parties should have the same tastes and interests and all. What I'm just saying is that even though you have different ideas of what makes you happy and content, both of you should still accept and respect the other's personal preference. Both of you have to adjust, not just the other one. Relationships don't go like that.

Smod, you still haven't answered the most important question. What's more important to you? That girl or your love for Middle-earth? I know it's hard to choose and it's not really necessary but in your case, it is necessary. She's already the one pushing herself away from you. You can't do anything about it anymore. You've been nice enough to still go out with her despite all that she did. PippinTook and pip-foot are very right, you deserve better. There are many other girls there that I'm sure will understand you and even share your interest of Middle-earth.

Hhhmmm, if I were you, I've long broke up with her already. You're...total opposites. The saying says "opposites attract", but I have never been a fan of that saying. It just works in fictional stories and what not. Sure you could have opposite tastes and interests, but at least, try to respect each other. But I'm afraid you're the only one who knows how to respect and accept. Like I said in my previous post, relationships don't go like that. You both have to adjust and accept and respect each other. LOTR is already out of this, but I'm talking about everything.

Calling names (mean or sweet) is VERY normal in a relationship. It's not just about "having same interests" or "tolerating the other's interests." It's about being in the relationship, and just liking/loving each other, NOT liking/loving/tolerating each other's interests. Have you guys ever heard of "opposites attract"? As I've said in my other post, I've had boyfriends before who makes fun of me because of LOTR and HP and cartoons and stuff like that, calling me names too because of how I dress somtimes: either too conservative or too show-off. But it does not affect the relationship because relationship is base on what you feel for each other, NOT for each other's interests.

Let's be kinda fair (even just this once..LOL) I will put myself into her perspective.

Do you, smodden, spend all your time and passion just to LOTR to the extent that you never spend time with her anymore and give her some "words of sweetness and passion"? Maybe you're delving yourself too deep to the world Tolkien have created and you're already forgetting that there are other people in your life and you're unconsciously neglecting them. Maybe that's why she's so upset about LOTR. I'm not saying that you have to spend all your time with her and treat her like a baby. I'm not saying that you should forget Middle-earth already and competely abandon the people in this forum (we will miss you, Josh.. ) but I'm just looking some reasons, you see, as far as your girlfriend is concerned. What's hard to do? I'm not telling him to do a certain thing or something. I'm just asking him if he's like "that". Always talking about LOTR stuff all day and all night, that's why his girlfriend is getting pissed.

I NEVER said that you have to take a break from LOTR. And I NEVER said that you should take a rest from this forum. I'm just saying that if you're with her, control your over-obsession of LOTR (in case you're really like that, that's why I was asking you in my earlier post) And of course you should talk about LOTR when you're in this forum, I never said you have to talk about something else. This forum and your girlfriend are different. Just because I said that you have to control your obsession a little bit when you're around her doesn't mean that you also have to take a break from LOTR in general and this forum. OK?
