Ok, this has been bugging me for awhile. In ANH, 3P0 says "there will be no escape for the princess this time" as Vader and the troopers board the ship, then when R2 D2 is playing the hologram on Tatooine, Luke asks who she is and 3P0 says he isn't quite sure, but he believed she was a person of some importance. So is this just a mistake in the dialogue or what?

yerssot
no, he probably is doubting between being the obedient servant and answering all to Luke or what was told to him by Captain Antilles (ANH novel and yes that's canon) to keep Leia's identity a secret

As yet we do not know all the stuff that's went on in the years between episode 3 and episode 4.If there is to be a tv series just think about the possibilitys.I for one am very excited about a tv series.

mephistodesigns
he just says he not sure who she is. But he knows of the Rebellion and that the organization he essentially works for, so he must know shes active in it. But outside the films, that was just a line of dialogue to let US know she was active in the fight against the Empire so we think she's in great danger and the scene is more interesting.

BlueHarvest
3P0 lied to Luke. Simple.

.:Space Opera:.
i thought that they erased their memory slightly. perhaps they were damaged in the crash

Morridini
The memory wipe occurred 20years before ANH, so I doubt that had anything to say.

Perhaps this was just another Lucas flaw. Perhaps he shot the scene with Luke end 3PO before the one in the ship, and had made some changes in the mean time. Like Anakin Skywalker wasn't supposed to be Vader at the time of ANH, but that got changed in the time between ANH and ESB.

Sesse
That would be pretty hard for 2 droids to lose exactly same amount of data from their memory at the same time.

If one of them should falter, then the other could re-tell the story to the faltered one.

Morridini
What? It is only 3PO who says he doesn't know who she is. R2D2 knows but is unable to communicate with Luke.

Sesse
But if C3PO really doesn't know anything, then R2D2 could tell 3PO the story, which 3PO could tell to luke.

Of course this wouldn't work if 3PO was altering the truth on purpose...

Jackie Malfoy
That is indeed a very strange line since the third movie coming out the twins are going to be born and vador is not vador yet.So I think this is wrong to have that line in it since the new hope is supose to take a while later of the third one.
Either that or something happen that we don't know anything about.JM

yerssot
it's not cause you don't know it that it's wrong... the movie isn't out yet

Darth Subjekt
and yes Anakin is VadEr before the end of the movie. So it would stand to reason that hes Vader when the twins are born, which is at the end of the movie. And what does that have to do with C3PO telling luke ANYTHING? Vader being Vader in Ep3 when thwe kids are born as nothing to do with a line 3PO tell luke in ANH.

PVS
i second that.
so many people just cant grasp the idea that 3p0 just MIGHT
be able to keep a secret. sure he is a coward and a blabbermouth,
but 3p0 has never gave away his friends or the rebellion.

yes, 3p0 lied

Jackie Malfoy
Ok now you guys are geting off the subject and it is geting confusing! Can we please go back to t he topic? Thanks!JM

PVS
wtf?

§pearhead
you were the one off topic.

as yers said, c-p30 lied to protect the princess. "Someone of great importance"...he'd know someone of importance who's near him

yerssot
he didn't lie, he followed an order of his rightful master

PVS
the order: lie

yerssot
the order: protect the princess by hiding her identity

mtryder
the method he would employ in order to do this: lie.

yerssot
or perhaps he got a memory wipe and got it restored later on? stick out tongue

PVS
hide her identity means to not tell the truth about her identity
to speak a nontruth is to lie.

3p0 lied

3p0 is not an idiot

why cant anyone respect goldenrod?

poor 3p0 will never get his props sad

yerssot
or just beating around the bush wink

PVS
SHOW SOME RESPECT FOR GOLDENROD!!! stick out tongue

yerssot
not any time soon

Darth Subjekt
how exactly could a droid knowingly lie? doesn't that take some sort of "human" emotion or traits? Agreed that he did lie, but how? Maybe it was inadvertent, like he was doing what he was told, which was lying, but it wasn't intentional, like PVS said. But do you think that a droid is can "lie"?

PVS
well, in the star wars universe, droids can feel fear,
anger, sadness...so why not?

3p0 lies to the stormtroopers on the DS1 about taking R2 for maintenance, lies about having magic powers to the ewoks, gets pissed off at R2 on a regular basis, always worries about his friends when they are in danger. he has emotions, its as clear as day. since he has emotions and free thought, why can he not lie? its a no brainer. droids in the SW universe are human in every way with exception to their anatomy.

Jedi-Knight 8k2
Its possible C3PO never came in contact with Leah or else a plot erorr

Dirty Vader
Then why does he insit on R2-D2 playing the message. And telling him that it's ok and that Luke is the rightfull owner now. The message would reveal something.

It's just a flaw.

yerssot
cause he doesn't want to get blown up thanks to the stubborness of R2

PVS
because 3p0 really wants nothing to do with r2's mission.
he follows the same order by pure obligation, but from the
second he leaves tatooine in ep2, he expresses his discontent
on a regular basis. he WANTS r2 to just play the message and
be done with it, but will not screw up the mission either.

3p0 never alerted luke that r2 had escaped the moisture farm,
when it would have made perfect sense for him to do if he truely
could not be trusted. 3p0 was almost certain that he would be deactivated
for letting R2 go, but he did anyway didnt he? for a cowardly droid, thats
conviction.

also, 3p0 never mentioned "the princess" to luke when the message was accidentally played, did he? "there'll be no escape for the princess this time"
he KNEW who leia was and didnt give her away.

the droid lied
