Well, my PC came with a network card, and that was self-installed.
I recently had the fortune of losing EVERYTHING on my PC cry and had to install a dodgy copy of XP Pro

and bugger... my PC hasn't installed my card, but it's aware of it's existence
I tell it to locate the drivers online, and it can't find them

how can I find out the make of it, or whatever you need to know, so I can download them?

yerssot
look on the box

dave123
my PC's almost a year old.... the box left long ago

yerssot
is it on the bill you got from the PC?
you need a name before you can go get the drivers

dave123
is there anyway of finding it out via the PC?
yerssot
if it can't locate it, you can't get the name...
you mean, you checked in device manager?
dave123
it knows there's a device there... but doesn't know what model/make etc....
yerssot
it doesn't give it as conflict, so I don't think there is a need to get the drivers update on it... it worked before? it's in the right place? connected correctly?
dave123
it doesn't need an update, because there is no driver at all
it worked before, but hasn't work since I installed XP Pro and lost everything
i'm assuming everything is connected before because I haven't touched it.
Raz
How do I know you're not lieing to me again http://images.killermovies.com/forums/icons/v2/icon2.gif

yerssot
so you went from ME or something to XP?
if so, the card is simply not XP compatible
dave123
no, i had XP Home edition....
then my OS completely screwed up
so i got a friend to give me XP Pro
and I've lose the device driver that came with my PC originally
and raz.... that was a classic

Raz
Well I'm not helping you out ever again schmoll
dave123
just cos you don't know what's wrong

Raz
Well its obvious that all you need to do is ...
...
...
nice trick

yerssot
I checked a few sites on this ...
do you have the SP packs installed?
first do that and then I think you still gotta get that driver so that if you install he recognises it
dave123
well it came with SP2.... bit I'm gonna go get all the updates from windows now

dave123
OK, I'm downloading some .NET framework...
there's 2 others: some CD thing and some journal thing, but they dont seem relevant
there's nothing else available
yerssot
as said in a belgian movie:
"I can't come up with a good idea now, even if I dressed in drag and did the hoola"
I'm gonna contact a few friends who are good at these things, see what they can think of
Raz
I wouldn't install the framework - it'll cause you problems

dave123
yers> thanks
raz> cancelled

yerssot
errr...Yeah... dave... we're going through theories here...
is there a reason to believe that while you were asleep, leprachauns or vampires could get a hold on your computer?
if you think that didn't happen, is it possible that your ...errrrr... copy of this, contained a wrong code that caused XP to screw up on things? and did you try to reinstall XP?
dave123
i formatted, then installed XP Pro
yerssot
they're talking about PCI slots now, but I do suggest you recheck your home for any leprachauns
EDIT: suggestion is to format your pc again and re-install XP Pro cause this never happened to them or anyone they know ... so you're just screwed with this one, judging by their experience in this
yerssot
if that doesn't work, try changing the PCI slot cause it might have broken down all of a sudden
if that doesn't work, it is possible you need a new motherboard
but before you do that last one, it is better to get technicians to look at it before you dive into expenses
yerssot
last they said was that with some PCI's you gotta install the software if any, first and the driver from the manufacturer and then shut down, and lastly insert the card and boot so the Found New Hardware wizard can install it
that's all I can do for now, dave
dave123
i've decided to get a USB-ethernet device thingy
they're kinda cheap, and don't involve complicated stuff

dave123
oh, and muchos gracias to razzle and yers for all their help

Raz
Did you not open your computer like I suggested?
dave123
scratch that, i ripped off the back and put in a new network card
when i examined my old network card, it was a small metal box.... there was no way to tell of a make or model at all

Raz
It must have been really cheap, as any generic network card usually shows up as a "Realtek-compatible" in Device Manager.
yerssot
mister dave got ripped huh

dave123
meh, i just installed an old card i had from my old PC

so i didn't pay anything
yerssot
shame
works now?
dave123
like a charm
but the inside of my computer is at least 90% dust

yerssot
get rid of it then ... seems your card broke then or something
dave123
meh, that would involve opening it back up

yerssot
jimminy jelocers batman
to the screwdriver!
