I agree I guess it may be because of the age of consent and the fact that most young men have a hard time coming to terms with their sexuality from the ones I do know, also the fact that the books are aimed at 11 years and up so she may not have wanted to confuse or worry young lads that may be experimenting, another factor is that homosexuality is seen as a taboo by many biggots and is seen as not a good wauy of living I think homosexual people are lovelly and i have many gay friends.

the actors for sirius and lupin were gay but they still performed brilliantly. i think its the fact that youth are also exposed to the books, and having to explain homo or bisexuality to a child could be complicated. i have many friends who are gay and support them 100%. they're PEOPLE just who make different decisions it doesnt change who they are but its just the fact that she might not have wanted to deal with all the letters about a subject as touchy as that. btw hey tigress!!! long time no see!!!

For one thing it is a children's book and another is that not all books have to have gay chactors in it!Anyway if you want to read about such things read harry potter slash fanfaction it is nasty and sick but if you fancy that sort of thing go ahead.JM

I think because if someone were to be gay in the story, it would drive people away from the story, it would divert their attention from the story, to this person being gay

like i said before, the subject IS rather touchy. im sure that it wouldnt be a morality issue if there was a person in the books, but jk would have to deal with a lot more probably. parents reading the books might have to try and explain what that is to a child, which can be very delicate and frustrating...i just didnt think she wanted to deal with mail bashing her from angry parents or something doesnt mean shes not all for it. you never know, people view issues different ways depending on values, morals and how they were brought up

How do you know that nobody in Harry Potter is gay? All of the children are to young to be sure of their sexuality and most of the adults don't seem to have partners, theres a fair chance one of them could be gay.

just cause it's totally ok to be gay doesn't mean it has to be squeezed in every book, in paticular books that were made for kids. i don't think an 11 year old should wonder " why is he kissing a guy?" or what not. the books are made for entertainment, not teaching kids about sexuality.

yes, but like impatientinky said, this book isnt made for that. and too much romance would make the magic not as exciting. dont get me wrong i hav nothin against gay people.

i just wanted to add that i have nothing what so ever against gay poeple. as a matter of fact i have a very good friend that's gay and he is totally fun. we used to go out together all the time and discuss the cute guys before i moved here. anyway, i just don't think hp is the right book (series)....and i hope poeple don't start yelling at me now

Interesting thread. Oddly enough, I was going to make one like this.

Anyways, I agree with what most of the people said. Homosexuality is a touchy subject to explain to a child who reads the books. Although, what about the "violence" and the deaths in it? They're touchy subjects too, right? Well, I have two thoughts on this.

One is that there ARE gay characters in the Harry Potter books, it just isn't specifically pointed out. Like Proffessor Lupin and Sirius Black for instance... (and this isn't because I ship them ok! ) I think they're queer because come on! they're not married! lol... and I think they asolutely make a GREAT couple! hihihihi...

Two is that there's supposed to be gay characters.. I mean, not all witches and wizards are straight you know! They're in their teen/hormone years... heh... For all we know, Harry turns out queer later on. Though I doubt it, seeing as he was so unhealthily obsessed with Cho Chang. lol

while i agree on the violence issue, there are still a large amount of conservative people out there...trying to explain to a child what being homosexual involves could lead to a whole vestige of new things. im not saying its wrong, im all for personal happiness and have lots of friends who are gay, but i dont think that jk wants to put such a controversial issue in a book.

Great get kids to learn about stuff like that in a younger age would be great it would really mess them up.Right now they use gay as in saying insults like something like "That guy is so gay(stupid)or whatever.
To tell a kid about gays is awful.If the parents don't want them to know about it until they are older then fine.But there is no reason to ruin a great book like harry potter with this gay stuff.
