this topic has been done mah times, but to persue the chase of our "other" forum we "may" be getting. I was wondering who everyones favourite vala is and why,
My 3 would be,
Tulkas - He is the hunter of Morgoth and a great wrestler, he was let into the Vala after being the one who could actually stop Melkor, mwahaha
Ulmo - Great hunter, my kind of guy and his hunters were superb creatures
Kitoky
MELKOR!!!!!!!!
*die Tulkas die*

If we're talking about cool factor, I say my favorites are Melkor and Aule, but overall, my real favorite is Ulmo.
And oh Disc, the hunter is Orome, not Ulmo.
Exa
Hm, difficult question... the best is definitely Melkor, I also like Ulmo a lot (in spite of his ugly name
), Mandos is cool, too... the best Valie is definitely Nienna for me, but I also like Este and Yavanna.
Discos
shit, I couldnt remember which one it was.....I knew it was one of them, take it Ulmo is the sea dude
anyways, sorry I couldnt post my 3rd one, I had to go off the computer, well I got thrown off the computer as it was time to change class.
Discos - the other one was Aule
Fëanor
Melco definately...he had a part of every vala's power...and he's one bad ass dude...but for strength and a love for battle, Tulkas...For some reason Tulk reminds me a lot of Thor which is my favorite viking god...Third would be Aule maker of things, from which Feanor learned indirectly of course.
Discos
yeah, Tulkas reminds me of Zues from the animated movie Hercules, the greek gods!....infact thats what the Vala reminds me on
Fëanor
yeah pretty much they do in fact remind of the greek gods...but the Norse gods are pretty cool also..
Iluvatar - Kronos - ?
Manwe - Zeus - Odin
Tulkas - Hercules - Thor
Melkor - ? - Loki?
Vanna - Hera - ?
Mandos - Hades - Freja
Exa
Loki? Hm, Melkor really reminds me of Loki in his time in Valinor, though I dont know exactly why... but I think the main difference between them is that Loki was I think rather among the gods while Melkor is usually in his stronghold somewhere in the north, far from all the others.
Whos Vanna?
sauron
your THREE???? thats two
melkor-totally cool lets kill things guy, had best servant ever
mandos-knows aot....sees future....mysterious....
Fëanor
Vanna White
I actually meant to write Varda...you know...I can't remember any evil viking gods or maybe I just need a refresher course...
Exa
lol k
However, I think Varda is a little boring...
Fëanor
compared to Hera she does...
Aurora
I loved Yavanna, since she is the reason that Treebeard exists
I like Ulmo as well, he is such a loner... differant than most of the Valar... plus come on, how can you not love the King of the Sea???
Fëanor
the King of the Sea...well Osse seemed tempramental next to him i think...
Discos
sauron, i posted my third one.......lol read "all" posts sir

Well, I suppose I now have to give my reason why Ulmo's my favorite Vala overall? Well, aside from his personality that I truly admire (perspective, loner, mysterious but very powerful), I also love him because of other reasons.
While I wouldn't deny that Manwe and Melkor are still more powerful than him, I could say that he's more admirable, and deserve all the respect that he's getting, for me at least.
Ulmo has power over all the Waters of the World, that I assume all of you know already,
and therefore able to "control" and perceive many of the movements in the World and his knowledge was deep, aiding his foresight, may I say a rival to Manwe's Eagles. (no offense Disc,
) Although he did remove himself to the Outer Waters, he was still able to have an impact on the movements of the world in the Second Age. In the Second and Third Ages, Ulmo was the most loyal Vala to the plights of Men and Elves, aiding them in their quests, from Tuor to, may I bravely state Aragorn with the favorable conditions for the ship trek and giving news to Faramir of Boromir (yes, perhaps a stretch) Because of these realizations, I see Ulmo as the Vala most true to his original intention for Middle-earth and the like by aiding its inhabitants as long as it lies in his power.
Maybe Osse and Uinen also have some part on this, but heck, we're talking about the Valar.
Discos
excellent explanation shadowy,
for some reason I didnt much like Manwe, probably cause he thought he was "all that" mr big
Thorondor
lol true discos but....he was lol.
shadowy_blue
Also I forgot, also because of Ulmo's famous way of communicating to his chosen people (sending prophetic dreams that is), Finrod and Turgon were inspired and grew a great desire to build their own havens in Beleriand.
Later famed as Nargothrond and Gondolin, two of the best cities ever.
Discos
ah i forgot about Gondolin, but yeah the Vala totally rules, there was certain vala I was like
too...
Discos
I agree with Exa, the Vala did didly squat to Middle earth, they were all in love with Valinor and over certain parts of the west and Middle Earth didnt seem good enough
Discos - they took their bloody time getting their fingers out and chaining Melkor
Fëanor
I think Manwe was the least favorite character for Tolkien to actually flesh out...whereas everyone else you almost feel their personality, especially Melkor and Osse to an extant that he was quick to anger and all that...And Tulkas' love for fighting and laughing.
I didn't get much out of Manwe's character except that he consulted with Eru on certain things, and that he'd permit Mandos to speak, Manwe being powerful next to Melkor was the least of my favorite characters.
