eggmayo
Couldnt find a thread, but I'm sure there is one.

Which is the best guitar solo?
I love soloing, so Im trying to get some prime practice rib.
So far, Stairway to Heaven, Master of Puppets, Knocking on Heavens Door, Phantom of the Opera and Comfortably Numb under my belt.

ElectricBugaloo
Machine GUn by Jimi Hendrix, hands down.

zeppelinfloyd
Machine Gun, or performances of Purple Haze where he does to astonishing solo at the end (Berkeley).

eggmayo
kewl

Demooni
The two-minute solo in "Fury of the Storm" by Herman Li of DragonForce

ElectricBugaloo
or the live version of "Freebird"

el_barto
Cant say i know

<<Solo>>
The 4 Minute (or so) guitar solo, in "The Diamond Sea" by Sonic Youth.

Fearnix
Your all wrong it's Porpoise Song by trouble rock

norrin radd
waht about sultans of swing alchemy version (live) from dire straits.

Fearnix
no

Korri
there are far too many to choose from.

when Kirk Hammett plays that solo on Master of Puppets it blows people's minds. He has come out with some blinding solos.

Jimmy Hendrix obviously, but he is not as good a lyrisist as he is a guitar player.

eggmayo
nah, i dont really need the best, just name some that you think are cool

Korri
i just did no expression

eggmayo
oh yeah.

Korri
messed k.

eggmayo
stick out tongue

bakerboy
BB king, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix, Brian May and Keith Richards.

eggmayo
which particular songs?

nick1811
dimebags in 'cemetary gates'

bakerboy
BB king in lucille

Eric Clapton in Laila

Brian May in Bohemhan rapsody

Jimmy Hendrix in anything

Keith Richards in satisfaction.

eggmayo
weirdly enough, i dont even recall bohemian rhapsody having a solo.
we will rock you stands out though!

ElectricBugaloo
People, it's JIMI hendrix. Respect the man.

Jimmy Hendrix obviously, but he is not as good a lyrisist as he is a guitar player.

1) See above
2) There aren't many lyricists out there that are as good lyricists as Hendrix was at guitar
3) Lyricism has nothing to do with guitar solos.
4) Some of his best songs were written by other people (All Along The Watchtower was written by Dylan).
5) Listen to Machine Gun.

Korri
no expression yeah i ws just saying.

eggmayo
I gotta admit, when I first heard any Hendrix, I was put-off by the lyrics.
Are you Experienced being the only song I really liked.

ElectricBugaloo
But you don't listen to Hendrix for the lyrics, like you don't listen to Dylan for singing ability.

Castles Made of Sand has very good lyrics.
All Along The Watchtower was written by Dylan
Hey Joe was an old Blues song

bakerboy
Bohemian rapsody has very good guitar and bass work . But i said it for post only one May's work. But in we will rock you, radio ga ga, who wants to live forever, its a kind of magic, hammer to fall, etc there are fantastics Brian Mays works too.

bakerboy
And technally, May and Clapton were better guitarrists than Hendrix, but Hendrix was the man who bring us the concept of rock guitarrist.

ElectricBugaloo
But Hendrix brought something that neither May nor Clapton could bring to the music; his level of innovation was light years ahead of anyone of his time--or any time. He could play the blues standards well (look at his live work), but then he'd transform it into something wholly his own. It was amazing.

bakerboy
Agree with you.

DaRk Lotus
BB king,Eddy VanHalen smile

Dr. Strangelove
Probably not the best, but the most memorable for me was listening to Jimmy Hendrix guitar solo of the National Anthem on September 11.

Dr. Strangelove
*Edit*

norrin radd
why? Mark Knopfler is awesome

Korri
i know what you mean.

eggmayo
Yeah, there are really good guitar lines, but his voice doesnt fit with the song. Sorry to all Hendrix fans this offends.

Korri
laughing yeah but its true.

queenfan
I agree with everyone...Hendrix and Clapton were all great...but my absolute favorite is Queen. Brian May is awesome. I think his best solo was Brighton Rock live at Wembley '86. Its like a 10 minute thing.

ChickinMeat
i personally prefered dimebags solo in "the sleep", but then all his solo's are bad ass!

john petrucci (for this example liquid tension experiment) does an awesome, powerful solo in the song kindred spirits, but like dimebag all his solo's are awesome

michael romeo from SymphonyX is a legend on guitar, he doea a great duel solo with the keyboard player in the song "of sins and shadows"

tabby999
when they get cranking Judas Priest solos are pretty solid, i mean the one in Ram It Down goes for like 2 1/2 minutes, but then again, they had deul guitarists

Bad Boy
Ummm do me a favour dude.... take some guitar lessons and then read your message again in 2 years time.

bakerboy
Hahaha, good one. If you have taken guitar lessons, you would know that technally, Eric Clapton and Brian May are better guitarrists than Hendrix.

Fearnix
Your all wrong it's Porpoise Song by trouble yes

alic88
wht bout EVH the BEAT IT guitar solo

baracustastic
Slash on Sweet Child O' Mine. Easily the best.

Fearnix
yeah that solo rock

Bad Boy
There is no way they are technically better dude! Clapton isn't exactly a good guitarist, while Brian May, though innovative, aint that technically great!

Lord_Andres
Non of you heard any of the Swedish guitar gods? if you are looking for amazing guitar work they make it! they are 4 acturly I'l name'em here

1. John Norum
2. Yngwie Malmsteen
3. Kee Marcello
4. Mattias Eklundh

All give amzing guitar work in almust every song they play in, check out these songs

John Norum - Eternal Flame
Europe - Wasted Time (John Norum's Solo)
Don Dokken - Forever (John Norum's Solo)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Forever One
Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force
Yngwie Malmsteen - Gates Of Babylon

Europe - Let The Good Times Rock (Kee Marcello's Solo)
Europe - Superstitious (Kee Marcello's Solo)
Europe - Halfway to Heaven (Kee Marcello's Solo)

Fate - One By One (Mattias Eklundh's Solo)
Fate - Surgeon In Love (Mattias Eklundh's Solo)
Any ' Freak Kitchen ' song basicly

Mattias Eklundh is very known for his uniqe guitar sound when he plays a solo, never heard any other guitaris play with the same sound, Joe.S sometime uses a sound that runs in the same vain but not its not so often, anyway all the guitar players I listed here are very good, play extremly fast from time to time, and play with style, and they are all technically better then the ones you listed so far

Fearnix
as good as some of those songs mabe your wrong
its
Porpoise Song by trouble

Lord_Andres
Porpoise Song by trouble ? whats that?

Fearnix
Its a good song with a amazing solo

Lord_Andres
then what did you mean by saying I was wrong???

Fearnix
Because Those songs dont have the best solo in

Lord_Andres
you havint even heard those songs yet

Fearnix
yes i have

Lord_Andres
then listen again!!! thats good guitar work and you know it

ElectricBugaloo
Playing as fast as you can doesn't necessarily make it the best.

bakerboy
Eric Clapton isnt a good guitarist? May isnt that technichally great?

Man, what are you talking about? Clapton is one of the best guitarist ever, and have you ever seen may in any queen concert? The man has magic with the guitar, thechnically he is perfect, as clapton is.

eggmayo
^^^ hes kinda right you know, may and clapton are some of the best guitarists to walk the planet.

nick1811
in respect to dimebag, id say his in cemetary gates

Lord_Andres
Try to check out a song by Europe caled ' Heart Of Stone ' amazing solo by John Norum , not exacly very fast just damn good !

Bierbommetje
Billy Gibbons on She's just Killing Me, both solo's kick ass.

Sharp Dressed Man's also got a hella cool slide solo.

Red Superfly
Slash anyone?

Sweet Child O Mine, Welcome To The Jungle, ahhh, excellent.

eggmayo
November Rain, Knocking on Heavens Door and Paradise City as well?

Bad Boy
Mate, learn some Clapton and May pieces and you'll find out that they are simple!

Red Superfly
Erm yeah, I didn't feel like listing ALL of GnR's songs - but basically pretty much any Slash solo is brilliant.

eggmayo
true. except on velvet revolver songs.

Bierbommetje
The solo on Double Talkin Jive is one of the coolest imo.

norrin radd
if you like guns listen to civil war.

eggmayo
I had Civil War, but I could never be bothered to listen past the Cool Hand Luke quote at the start.

norrin radd
civil war is one of my favorite songs of guns n roses.

ElectricBugaloo
Most of Claptons pieces are either blues standards or written by someone else anyways.

bakerboy
Someone who cant see the amazing talent of Clapton and May with the guitar is someone who doesnt understand about music and guitar.

bakerboy
And if his songs are written by another people isnt so important, the guy performance with the guitar is amazing.

Bad Boy
bakerboy, do you play guitar?

***S***
Best Guitar solo....

Steve Morse of Deep Purple: Highway Star

or Ted Nugent: Stranglehold <- SO CATCHY

bakerboy
Not, but i have friends who have been in bands as guitarrists and singers, and i could distinguish a good guitarrist .

eggmayo
What are you actually arguing about, I cant remember

Bad Boy
Mate, please don't take any offense by this, but the best way to just judge a guitarist is by being a guitarist yourself. I know a shit load about guitars and guitar playing so I know what I'm talking about. It may sound arrogant but you don't say these things as a musician unless you mean it and know what I'm talking about, but I would rip Brian May and Eric Clapton to pieces myself if had the chance. Trust me dude, these guys are so over rated you won't believe!

Drifter101
one of the solos of Jimi Hendrix...... i personally enjoy "Bold as Love" the solo starting at 2:54 till the end of the song, or the longer version of the song which is just a long solo

bakerboy
Man, you dont know what are you talking about, and it nedeent to be a guitarrist to understand that clapton and may are two of the best guitarrists in the world, the same that you needent to be an actor to know that robert de niro or al pacino are great actors, or a basketball player to know that michael jordan is a great player. That is ridiculous.

Bad Boy
Guitar playing is different to acting or basketball.

Simple as this, if Clapton and May are 2 of the best guitarists in the world.... explain to me how they are.

bakerboy
Not, are different matters but someone who knows something about music could know that clapton and may are great guitarrists. And i dont understand your question, be more clear.

Bierbommetje
I think basicely the question was:

Whats so great about Clapton and May as guitarists

Bad Boy
yup

eggmayo
Brian Mays a brilliant guitarist.

Darth_Decimator
november rain 4 sure

Fearnix
Porpoise Song by trouble is by far the best
