the fox from FOTR

he saw the hobbits asleep in the old forest and thought thats strange, i wonder what they are doing or something...then it says 'he knew nought more of it, or ever did'

Maybe the fox is not concerned with Sauron and the Ring and whatever is happening in Middle-earth, just like the Eagles and the other animals, so he left the Hobbits alone.

Maybe he did hear of it, he just didnt want to get involved, like the ents at first. Maybe he thought it didnt really concern him so he went back to his little home. After all what can a fox really do

Maybe he never finds out what they were doing because he didn't want to find it out. Like OYEA said, perhaps he's not concerned with such matters. He just found it strange when he saw the Hobbits while he was there yet, while he was seeing them, but after that he didn't care anymore and just went away not carrying any concerns.

It just like a person seeing another person doing a strange thing on the street. At first you will find it strange and you will look at him, but then you will realize that it's not your business so you will then walk away and do whatever you are normally doing. And after that, after a couple of hours, you already forgot whatever you saw on that street. You don't care anymore.

So where did the fox go? It's either he went wandering again or went back to his/her shelter tending her children or something of that sort.

well maybe he knew afterwords but not before. he thought it was weird when he fist saw them but i suppose afterwords he knew who they were

the scene was

"Hobbits!" he thought. "Well, what next? I have heard of strange doings in this land, but I have seldom heard of a hobbit sleeping out of doors under a tree. Three of them! There's something mighty queer behind this." He was quite right, but he never found out any more about it.

there was another fox in the forest of chet though... but he didnt think anything chapter "a knife in the dark"

so he didnt really care and didnt go looking to see why they were there or what they were doing.

see, it surely interested him he wouldnt forget

and it says he NEVER found out more about it

this struck me as strange....as animals can talk to each other in this world of tolkiens...surely the news would spread

sauron, not really the "whole world"..the Hobbits from the Shire aren't aware of whatever happened, and I think also the people in Bree except a selected few...and that fox is just wandering around those areas, Crickhollow, Bree, Barrow-downs, Buckland, etc. so it's possible that he didn't hear about it too. And maybe the fox is dead already during that time. Got hunted or something. Maybe he went to Barrow Downs and Old Man Willow and the Barrow Wights killed him.

Maybe Tolkien didn't bother to write it out anymore. Maybe he forgot about him or something. Or maybe he thought the fox wasn't so important, he was just random. Not like Huan or Carcharoth or something that you really have to make track of their final fate.

to tolkien EVERYTHING in his books was important and he forgot none of them!

and as for the fox dying no...poor cute foxes cant die!

no, the fox was on the ship to the grey havens so he could live forever

sauron, not really. Whatever happened to the Barrow Wights? How about Tom and Goldberry? There are many other more. I know Tom is an enigma but what happened to the other creatures that he didn't bother to give a final fate. I'm not saying that those are not important, of course they are, but the fox is just not "that" important to have a final fate. It was just a random character, a random scene that didn't need to come back just so we could know what he thought about what happened to the Hobbits.

I think the fox survived... as nobody would have a reason to kill him... maybe he came to see sam's wedding with rosie... and one day he died peacefully and his last thought was that he never found out what had happened to the hobbits

pip-foot, not necessarily. Going to Valinor doesn't give any mortals immortality, they will just live in peace but they will still die eventually.

well, immortal or not, he would have died peacefully and happily. I dont really remember him either, and i ahve read it 3 times

i have to say that's one thing i dont like about Tolkien he always leave the smallest thing's unanswered that i want to know

but it was enough to get him his own thread

sauron, Nobody knows what happened to the fox... Ask Chris Tolkien if he knows..LOL..I have an idea..LOL...why don't we just plan out our own final fate just for him. So that all of us will find rest and we know that he's just OK..It's the best thing to do since we don't really know what happened. It's like giving names to those characters that we love so much but we don't know their character names. OK?

foxy wandered off and heard a screech a few nights later he ran to see what it ws and saw several hodded men in black running...so he followed them to a river which he jumped in....and ran at them...water covered him so he looks like a wave..and a horse....and he ran into them and swept them away....but was killed doing it

It's alright. Dark side, "evil" in Middle-earth....I'd like to be one!!
